pg. 2 Introduction
General Information
Shiftlock (automatic transmission)
When your vehicle is parked, the gear selector is locked in the (P)ark position. To release the selector from this
position, turn the ignition key to position II (or start the engine), \
depress the brake pedal, press the button on the
front side of the gear selector and move the selector from (P)ark.
Keylock (automatic transmission)
When you switch off the ignition, the gear selector must be in the (P)ark position before the key can be removed
from the ignition switch.
Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)
The ABS system in your vehicle performs a self-diagnostic test when the \
vehicle first reaches the speed of
approximately 12 mph (20 km/h). The brake pedal will pulsate several t\
imes and a sound may be audible from the
ABS control module. This is normal.
Fuel filler door
The fuel filler door, located on the right rear fender, is connected to \
your vehicle's central locking system.
Press the button on the light switch panel (see illustration on
page 56) when the vehicle is at a standstill to unlock
the fuel filler door. Please note that the fuel filler door will remain \
unlocked until the vehicle begins to move
forward. An audible click will be heard when the fuel filler door relock\
s.
Fuel filler cap
After refueling, close the fuel filler cap by turning it clockwise until\
it clicks into place. If this cap is not closed
tightly or if the engine is running when the vehicle is refueled, the Ma\
lfunction Indicator Lamp ("Check Engine"
light) will illuminate.

Indicates engine speed in thousands of revolutions per minute (rpm). D\
o not drive for long with the
needle in the red section. The engine has an built-in function preventin\
g excessively high engine speeds.
When this function operates, you may discern some pulsation, which in th\
at case is quite normal.
10. Gear and driving mode indicator
The currently selected driving mode is displayed here. If you use the op\
tional Geartronic function on the
automatic transmission, the currently selected gear will be displayed.
11. Ambient temperature gauge
This display indicates the air temperature outside your vehicle. A "snow\
flake" symbol in the text
window is displayed when the temperature is in the range of 23 - 36 °\
F (-5 - +2 °C).
Please note that this symbol does not indicate a fault with your vehicle\
. At low speeds or when the
vehicle is not moving, the temperature readings may be slightly higher t\
han the actual ambient
temperature.
12. Clock/set button
Turn the button to set the clock.
13. Fuel gauge
The fuel tank holds approximately:
Front wheel drive, non-turbo models - 18.5 US gal. (70 liters)
All turbo models - 18 US gal. (68 liters)
When the warning light in the gauge comes on, there are approximately 1.\
8 US gal. (8 liters) of fuel
remaining in the tank.

Indicator and warning symbols
The indicator and warning symbols light up when you turn the ignition ke\

(position II) before starting. This shows that the symbols are functio\

symbols go out. If the engine is not started within 5 seconds, all symbo\

These controls are used to individually set the temperature for both sid\
es of the passenger compartment. Please note
that the compartment will not be heated or cooled faster by setting the \
temperature higher or lower than necessary.
Set the control to the temperature you prefer.
Defroster
This function defrosts/ de-ices the windshield and front side windows. T\
he LED in the switch will light up to
indicate that the defrost function is engaged.
l Blower speed increases automatically and the air conditioning will switc\
h on (if not already on and if the
passenger compartment blower is not turned off) to dehumidify the air i\
n the passenger compartment.
l Recirculation will not function while defrost is engaged.
l The climate system will return to its previous settings when the defrost\
er function is switched off.
Blower control
Turn the control clockwise to increase or counterclockwise to decrease t\
he blower speed. Pressing the AUTO
switch will automatically regulate blower speed and override manual adju\
stment.
Turning the blower control counterclockwise until an orange LED comes on\
will turn both the blower and the air
conditioning off.

are not compatible with the fuel filler neck on vehicles equipped with t\
he evaporative control system.
Refueling
The fuel tank holds approximately 18 US gal. (68 liters) with sufficie\
nt volume left over to
accommodate possible expansion of the fuel in hot weather. Be aware that\
the "usable" tank capacity
will be somewhat less than the specified maximum. When the fuel level is\
low, such factors as ambient
temperature, the fuel's "Reid vapor pressure" characteristics, and terra\
in can affect the fuel pump's
ability to supply the engine with an adequate supply of fuel. Therefore,\
it is advisable to refuel as soon
as possible when the needle nears the red zone, or when the fuel warning\
light comes on.
pg. 124 Starting and driving
Fuel requirements
CAUTION!
- Do not refuel with the engine running
1. Turn the ignition off or to position I. If the ignition is on, an
incorrect reading could occur in the fuel gauge.
- After refueling, close the fuel filler cap by turning it clockwise unt\
il it clicks into place.
1
- Avoid overfilling the fuel tank. Do not press the handle on the filler\
nozzle more than one extra
time. Too much fuel in the tank in hot weather conditions can cause the \
fuel to overflow. Overfilling
could also cause damage to the emission control systems.
- Avoid spilling gasoline during refueling. In addition to causing damag\
e to the environment,
gasolines containing alcohol can cause damage to painted surfaces, which\
may not be covered under
the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
- Do not use gasolines containing methanol (methyl alcohol, wood alcoho\
l). This practice can result
in vehicle performance deterioration and can damage critical parts in th\
e fuel system. Such damage
may not be covered under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
1. If the fuel filler cap is not closed tightly or if the engine is runn\
ing when the vehicle is refueled, the Check
Engine Light (malfunction indicator lamp) may indicate a fault. Howeve\
r, your vehicle's performance will not be
affected. Use only Volvo original or approved fuel filler caps.

Changing wheels
The spare wheel is located under the rear hatch in the cargo area floor.\
The jack and crank are secured in
the wheel recess (see
pages 171 and 173).
There are two jack attachment points on each side of the vehicle (see i\
llustration on next page).
To change a wheel:
- Engage the parking brake.
- Put the gear selector in (P)ark (automatic transmission) or revers\
e (manual transmission).
- Remove the wheel cap (where applicable) using the lug wrench in the \
tool bag.
- With the vehicle still on the ground, use the lug wrench to loosen the\
wheel bolts 1/2 - 1 turn by
exerting downward pressure. Turn the bolts counterclockwise to loosen.
