American Petroleum Institute (API) symbol
The API Service Symbol "donut" is divided into three parts:
l The upper section describes the oil's performance level.
l The center identifies the oil's viscosity.
l The lower section indicates whether the oil has demonstrated energy-cons\
erving properties in a
standard test in comparison to a reference oil.

Engine oil
Changing engine oil and oil filter
See the previous page for oil specifications and
page 217 for oil volumes. Refer to the Warranty and
Service Records Information booklet for information on the oil change in\
tervals.
NOTE:
l Volvo does not recommend the use of oil additives.
l Synthetic oil is not used when the oil is changed at the normal maintena\
nce intervals except at owner
request and at additional charge. Please consult your Volvo retailer.
Checking and adding oil
The oil level should be checked every time the vehicle is refueled. This\
is especially important during
the period up to the first scheduled maintenance service.
l The vehicle should be parked on a level surface when the oil is checked.\
l If the engine is warm, wait for at least 10-15 minutes after the engine has been switched off\
before
checking the oil.
Checking the oil
- Pull out the dipstick and wipe it with a lint-free rag.
- Reinsert the dipstick, pull it out, and check the oil level.
- Add oil if necessary. If the level is close to the MIN mark, add appro\
ximately 1 US quart (1 liter) of oil.
- Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature.
- Switch off the engine and wait for at least 10-15 minutes and recheck \
the oil level. If necessary, add oil
until the level is near the mark.

1. The transmission oil does not normally need to be changed during the \
service life of the vehicle. However, it
may be necessary to replace the oil if the vehicle is often driven in ar\

or cold), when towing a trailer over long distances, for prolonged driv\
ing in mountainous areas, or if the vehicle
is often driven short distances in temperatures under 40°F (5°C)\

Three way catalytic converter
Three-way catalytic converter cautions
l Keep your engine properly tuned. Certain engine malfunctions, particular\
ly involving the electrical,
fuel or distributor ignition systems, may cause unusually high three-way\
catalytic converter
temperatures. Do not continue to operate your vehicle if you detect engi\
ne misfire, noticeable loss of

power or other unusual operating conditions, such as engine overheating \
or backfiring. A properly tuned
engine will help avoid malfunctions that could damage the three-way cata\
lytic converter.
l Do not park your vehicle over combustible materials, such as grass or le\
aves, which can come into
contact with the hot exhaust system and cause such materials to ignite u\
nder certain wind and weather
conditions.
l Excessive starter cranking (in excess of one minute), or an intermitte\
ntly firing or flooded engine can
cause three-way catalytic converter or exhaust system overheating.
l Remember that tampering or unauthorized modifications to the engine, the\
Electronic Control
Module, or the vehicle may be illegal and can cause three-way catalytic \
converter or exhaust system
overheating. This includes:
- Altering fuel injection setting or components.
- Altering emission system components or location or removing components\
.
- Repeated use of leaded fuel.
NOTE: Unleaded fuel is required for vehicles with three-way catalytic convert\
ers.

WARNING!
The distributor ignition system operates at very high voltages. Special \
safety precautions must be
followed to prevent injury. Always turn the ignition off when:
l Replacing distributor ignition components e.g. plugs, coil, etc.
l Do not touch any part of the distributor ignition system while the engin\
e is running. This may
result in unintended movements and body injury.

Engine specifications
1. Automatic transmission: 220 kW at 100 rps, 300 hp at 6000 rpm.
2. Automatic transmission: 350Nm at 32-100 rps, 258 ft. lbs at 1850-6000\
rpm.
Charge air cooler (Intercooler)
Turbocharged engines employ a turbo-compressor to force air into the eng\
ine inlet manifold and a
charge air cooler to cool the compressed inlet air. The resulting increa\
se in air flow raises pressure in the
intake manifold and increases engine power over that developed by the no\
rmally-aspirated engine. The
charge air cooler (which resembles a radiator) is located between the \
turbo-compressor and inlet
manifold.
Fuel system
The engine is equipped with a multiport fuel injection system.
