The AUTO function automatically regulates climate control to maintain th\
e desired
temperature. The automatic function controls heating, air conditioning, \
blower speed, recirculation, and
air distribution.
If you select one or more manual functions, the remaining functions cont\
inue to be controlled
automatically. All manual settings are

switched off when AUTO is switched on. AUTO CLIMATE is shown in the disp\
lay.
2. Blower speed
The blower speed can be increased or decreased by turning the knob. The\
blower speed
is regulated automatically if AUTO is selected. The previously set blowe\
r speed is disconnected.
NOTE
If the knob is turned counterclockwise and the blower indication in the \
display goes out, the blower and
the air conditioning are switched off. The display shows the blower symb\
ol and OFF.
3. Recirculation
This function can be used to shut out exhaust fumes, smoke, etc from the\
passenger
compartment. The air in the passenger compartment is then recirculated, \
i.e. no air from outside the car is
taken into the car when this function is activated. If the air in the ca\
r recirculates for too long, there is a

122 06 Starting and driving
General information
Economical driving conserves natural resources
Better driving economy may be obtained by thinking ahead, avoiding rapid\
starts and stops and adjusting
the speed of your vehicle to immediate traffic conditions.
Observe the following rules:
l Bring the engine to normal operating temperature as soon as possible by \
driving with a light foot on the
accelerator pedal for the first few minutes of operation. A cold engine \
uses more fuel and is subject to
increased wear.
l Whenever possible, avoid using the vehicle for driving short distances. \
This does not allow the engine
to reach normal operating temperature.
l Drive carefully and avoid rapid acceleration and hard braking.
l Use the transmission's Drive (D) position as often as possible and avo\
id using kickdown.
l Do not exceed posted speed limits.
l Avoid carrying unnecessary items (extra load) in the vehicle.
l Maintain correct tire pressure. Check tire pressure regularly (when tir\
es are cold).
l Remove snow tires when threat of snow or ice has ended.
l At highway driving speeds, fuel consumption will be lower with the air c\
onditioning on and the
windows closed than with the air conditioning off and the windows open. \
l Using the onboard trip computer's fuel consumption modes can help you le\
arn how to drive more
economically.
Other factors that decrease gas mileage are:
l Dirty air cleaner
l Dirty engine oil and clogged oil filter
l Dragging brakes
l Incorrect front end alignment
Some of the above mentioned items and others are checked at the standard\
maintenance intervals.
Avoid overheating the engine
Do not drive at engine speeds above 4,500 rpm if you tow a trailer in hi\
lly areas. This could cause the
engine oil to overheat.

Starting the vehicle
CAUTION
Automatic transmission: The engine should be idling when you move the gear selector. Never
accelerate until after you feel the transmission engage! Accelerating im\
mediately after selecting a gear
will cause harsh engagement and premature transmission wear. Selecting P\
or N when idling at a
standstill for prolonged periods of time will help prevent overheating o\
f the automatic transmission
fluid.
WARNING
l Always place the gear selector in Park (manual transmission: first or r\
everse gear) and apply the
parking brake before leaving the vehicle.and apply the parking brake bef\
ore leaving the vehicle. Never
leave the vehicle unattended with the engine running.
l Always open garage doors fully before starting the engine inside a garag\
e to ensure adequate
ventilation. The exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide, which is invisib\
le and odorless but very
poisonous.

cargo and luggage load capacity of your vehicle.
WARNING
l Exceeding the permissible axle weight, gross vehicle weight, or any othe\
r weight rating limits can
cause tire overheating resulting in permanent deformation or catastrophi\
c failure.
l Do not use replacement tires with lower load carrying capacities than th\
e tires that were original
equipment on the vehicle because this will lower the vehicle's GVW ratin\
g. Replacement tires with a
higher limit than the originals do not increase the vehicle's GVW rating\
limitations.

Uniform tire quality gradings
Uniform tire quality gradings
ALL PASSENGER VEHICLE TIRES MUST CONFORM TO FEDERAL SAFETY
REQUIREMENTS IN ADDITION TO THESE GRADES
Quality grades can be found, where applicable, on the tire sidewall betw\
een the tread shoulder and
maximum section width. For example:
Treadwear 200 Traction AA
Temperature A
TREADWEAR
The treadwear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of th\
e tire when tested under
controlled conditions on a specified government test course.
For example, a tire graded 150 would wear one and one half (1 1/2) tim\
es as well on the government
course as a tire graded 100.
The relative performance of tires depends upon the actual conditions of \
their use, however, and many
depart significantly from the norm due to variation in driving habits, m\
aintenance practices and
differences in road characteristics and climate.
TRACTION
The traction grades, from highest to lowest, are AA, A, B, and C, as mea\
sured under controlled conditions
on specified government test surfaces of asphalt and concrete. A tire ma\
rked C may have poor traction
performance.

NOTE
In dark conditions, switching on the tire sealing system's compressor wi\
ll illuminate the pressure
gauge.
7. Inflate the tire to the correct pressure as indicated in the tire inf\
lation tables on
pages 156 and 157. If
the tire needs to be inflated, start the tire sealing system's compresso\
r. If necessary, release air from the
tire by pressing the vent button (8).
8. Turn off the compressor (press switch 2 to the 0 position) when the\
correct inflation pressure has been
reached.
CAUTION
The compressor should not be used for more than ten minutes at a time to\
avoid
overheating.
9. Unscrew the hose from the tire's inflation valve and reinstall the va\
lve cap.
10. Disconnect the electrical wire from the 12-volt socket.
11. Return the hose and electrical wire to the compartment on the side o\
f the unit.
NOTE
When the tire sealing system has been used to seal a flat tire, the tank\
containing the sealing compound,
and the hose must be replaced. See the instructions on the following pag\
e. Contact a Volvo retailer for
replacement parts.

Electrical system
Three-way catalytic converter - general information
l Keep your engine properly tuned. Certain engine malfunctions, particular\
ly involving the electrical, fuel or
distributor ignition systems, may cause unusually high three-way catalyt\
ic converter temperatures. Do not continue to
operate your vehicle if you detect engine misfire, noticeable loss of po\
wer or other unusual operating conditions,
such as engine overheating or backfiring. A properly tuned engine will h\
elp avoid malfunctions that could damage
the three-way catalytic converter.
l Do not park your vehicle over combustible materials, such as grass or le\
aves, which can come into contact with the
hot exhaust system and cause such materials to ignite under certain wind\
and weather conditions.
l Excessive starter cranking (in excess of one minute), or an intermitte\
ntly firing or flooded engine can cause three-
way catalytic converter or exhaust system overheating.
l Remember that tampering or unauthorized modifications to the engine, the\
Electronic Control Module, or the
vehicle may be illegal and can cause three-way catalytic converter or ex\
haust system overheating.
This includes:
- Altering fuel injection settings or components.
- Altering emission system components or location or removing components\
.
- Repeated use of leaded fuel.
