Accessing the rear seat-Easy Entry
Move the seat belt from the guide before entering the rear seat. See page 15.
Manual seat
Moving the seat forward:
1. Pull up control 1 (see the illustration above) to release the backr\
est.
2. Tilt the backrest forward and slide the seat forward.
Moving the seat rearward:
1. With the backrest tilted forward, move the seat rearward to the desir\
ed position.
2. Pull up control 1 and return the backrest to the upright position.
Power seats
Easy entry is only intended to be used when the front seat in unoccupied\
.
Moving the seat forward:
1. Pull up control 1 (see the illustration above) to release the backr\
est.
2. Tilt the backrest forward.
3. Press and hold down button 2 (see the illustration above) to move t\
he seat forward.

The center section of the rear seat backrest can be opened to create spa\
ce for carrying long, light objects
(max. length 6.5 ft/2 meters, max. weight 55 lbs/25 kg). To do so, the\
center section (cushion) of the rear
seat backrest must be removed, the tire repair kit (if the vehicle is s\
o equipped) must be removed and
stowed in the trunk, and the plastic hatch in the trunk must be opened.
Removing the center backrest cushion
Pull the strap at the upper edge of the cushion, pull it forward, and li\
ft it out.
Opening the plastic hatch
From the trunk, press the catches in the two holes in the hatch (A in t\
he illustration) toward each other to
release the hatch, and fold it down.
NOTE
If the vehicle is equipped with the optional ski bag, the bag's zipper m\
ust be opened from the
passenger's compartment in order to insert objects through the ski hatch\
.
Replacing the backrest cushion
Begin by guiding the lower section of the cushion into place. Then press\
the upper section of the cushion
into place.
NOTE
This cushion is locked in place when the vehicle is locked with the remo\
te control. See
page
112.
Securing long objects
Long objects should be secured with one of the rear seat belts.
l Wrap the belt once around the object and lock the belt in the retractor \
as usual.
If the vehicle is equipped with the optional ski bag, pass the seat belt\
through the bag's handle before
fastening the seat belt.

l Check condition of drive belts.
l Check state of the battery's charge.
l Examine tires carefully (the spare tire as well), and replace those th\
at are worn. Check tire pressures.
l The brakes, front wheel alignment, and steering gear should be checked b\
y your Volvo retailer only.
l Check all lights, including high beams.
l Reflective warning triangles are legally required in some states/provinc\
es.
l Have a word with your Volvo retailer if you intend to drive in countries\
where it may be difficult to
obtain the correct fuel.
l Consider your destination. If you will be driving through an area where \
snow or ice are likely to occur,
consider snow tires.
1 To prevent injury from contact with hot surfaces, do not inspect your v\
ehicle's transmission fluid yourself. Have
your vehicle's transmission fluid level inspected by a qualified Volvo s\
ervice technician.

Fuel requirements
Octane rating
Volvo engines are designed to achieve rated horsepower, torque, and fuel\
economy performance using
premium 91 octane fuel.
Volvo recommends premium for best performance, but using 87 octane or ab\
ove will not affect engine
reliability.

unlock.
If so, the key will turn in the ignition switch but the car will not sta\
rt.
At the same time, a message "Steering locked turn wheel" will appear in \
the information display.
If this happens:
1. Remove the key from the ignition.
2. Turn the steering wheel slightly and hold it to release pressure on t\
he lock mechanism.
3. Reinsert the key and start the vehicle. The steering should immediate\
ly unlock. If not, try again.
NOTE
In order to help reduce vehicle theft, make sure the steering wheel lock\
is engaged before leaving the
vehicle.
WARNING
Never switch off the ignition (turn the ignition key to position 0) or\
remove the key from the ignition
switch while the vehicle is in motion. This could cause the steering whe\
el to lock, which would make
the vehicle impossible to steer.
129 06 Starting and driving
Starting the vehicle
To start the engine
1. Fasten the seat belt.
WARNING
Before starting, check that the seat, steering wheel and mirrors are adj\
usted properly. Make sure the
brake pedal can be depressed completely. Adjust the seat if necessary.
2. Apply the parking brake if not already set. The gear selector should \
be locked in the Park (P) position

l Under no circumstances should gasoline, naphtha or similar cleaning agen\
ts be used on the plastic or
the leather since these can cause damage.
l Take extra care when removing stains such as ink or lipstick since the c\
oloring can spread.
l Use solvents sparingly. Too much solvent can damage the seat padding.
l Start from the outside of the stain and work toward the center.
l Sharp objects (e.g. pencils or pens in a pocket) or Velcro fasteners o\
n clothing may damage the textile
upholstery.
l Clothing that is not colorfast, such as new jeans or suede garments, may\
stain the upholstery.

Washing and cleaning the vehicle
Cleaning the seat belts
Clean only with lukewarm water and a mild soap solution.
Cleaning floor mats
The floor mats should be vacuumed or brushed clean regularly, especially\
during winter when they should
be taken out for drying. Spots on textile mats can be removed with a mil\
d detergent. For best protection in
winter, Volvo recommends the use of Volvo rubber floor mats. Consult you\
r Volvo retailer.

Paint touch up
Touching up minor paint damage
Paint damage requires immediate attention to avoid rusting. Make it a ha\
bit to check the finish regularly -
when washing the vehicle for instance. Touch-up if necessary.
Paint repairs require special equipment and skill. Contact your Volvo re\
tailer for any extensive damage.
Minor scratches can be repaired by using Volvo touch-up paint.

Volvo advises you to follow the maintenance program outlined in the Warr\
anty and Service Records
Information booklet. This maintenance program contains inspections and s\
ervices necessary for the
proper function of your vehicle. The maintenance services contain severa\
l checks that require special
tools and training, and therefore must be performed by a qualified techn\
ician. To keep your Volvo in top
condition, specify time-tested and proven Genuine Volvo Parts and Access\
ories.
The Federal Clean Air Act - U.S
The Federal Clean Air Act requires vehicle manufacturers to furnish writ\
ten instructions to the ultimate
purchaser to assure the proper servicing and function of the components \
that control emissions. These
services, which are listed in the "Warranty and Service Records Informat\
ion" booklet, are not covered by
the warranty. You will be required to pay for labor and material used.
Maintenance
Your Volvo passed several major inspections before it was delivered to y\
ou, in accordance with Volvo
specifications. The maintenance procedures outlined in the Warranty and \
Service Records Information
booklet, many of which will positively affect your vehicle's emissions, \
should be performed as indicated.
It is recommended that receipts for vehicle emission maintenance be reta\
ined in case questions arise
concerning maintenance. Inspection and maintenance should also be perfor\
med anytime a malfunction is
observed or suspected.
