The arrangement of the controls and the styling of the dash
panel depend on the model version.
Equipment marked with * is fitted as standard only to certain
model versions or is available only for certain models as optional
equipment.
On right-hand drive vehicles the arrangement of the controls
and switches and the location of some items may vary. The sym-
bols on the controls and switches are the same as for left-hand
drive vehicles.
1)Cars with factory-fitted radio are supplied with a radio instruction lea\
flet.
43
44CONTROLS AND EQUIPMENTFor all models:Position 1
To lock the steering wheel , withdraw key
and turn wheel until you hear the locking
pin engage.
Warning
Do not withdraw key from lock until
vehicle is stationary! The steering
lock might otherwise unintentionally
engaged.
Note
If you forget to switch off the side lights or
a turn signal light, an audible signal will
sound after you switch off the ignition or
withdraw the key and then open the driv-
er’s door.
Position 2
If the key is difficult to turn in the lock or
cannot be turned to this position at all, move
the steering wheel back and forward slightly
to release the locking pin. Warning
If the vehicle is allowed to roll, the
ignition key must be in position 2 in
the lock - ignition on. This position
is also indicated by the warning
lights coming on. Failure to turn the
ignition key into this position can
result in the steering locking uninten-
tionally.
Do not withdraw the ignition key un-
til after the vehicle has come to a stop
and has been properly secured to
prevent it moving by applying the
handbrake or engaging a gear.
Position 3
The starter is operated when the key is
turned into this position. The ignition key
must be turned back each time into posi-
tion „1“ before again attempting to start the
engine. The starter repeat lockout in the ig-
nition lock prevents the starter again being
operated when engine is already running.
When the key is in this position, the main/
low beam headlights and other major elec-
trical components which are on, are then
switched off.
The starter may only be operated (ignition
key position 3), if the engine is not run-
ning. If the starter is immediately operated
after switching off the engine, the starter
or the engine can be damaged.
Starting engineGeneral notesWarning
Never run the engine in non-venti-
lated or enclosed areas, the exhaust
gases of the engine contain besides
the odourless and colourless carbon
monoxide a poisonous gas - hazard!
Carbon monoxide can cause uncon-
sciousness and death.
Never leave your vehicle unattended
with the engine running.
Before starting, move gear lever into
Neutral (selector lever of automatic gear-
box into position „P“ or „N“ ) and apply
handbrake firmly.
On models with a manual gearbox, de-
press the clutch pedal when operating
starter so that the starter only has to crank
the engine.
As soon as engine starts, release igni-
tion key immediately - otherwise the starter
may suffer damage.
After starting a cold engine, it may sound
noisy for a moment or two because the oil
pressure has to build up in the hydraulic
tappets first.
Do not warm engine up by running it with vehicle stationary. Drive off
straight away.
56CONTROLS AND EQUIPMENTIndicator/warning lightsThe position of the indicator/warning lights
depends on the model and engine versi-
on. You will find the symbols presented in
the description which follows on or at the
corresponding indicator/warning lights in
the instrument cluster.
When certain warning lights come on, this
is accompanied by an audible signal. A text
may also be shown in the information dis-
play* - see previous chapters.
Turn signal systemThe right or left indicator light flashes when
switching over the turn signal light upwards
or downwards.
If a turn signal fails, the warning light flashes
twice as fast. This does not apply when
towing a trailer. Both warning lights flash
when the hazard warning system is swit-
ched on.Main beamThe warning light comes on when main
beam is switched on or when the headlight
flasher is used.
Further details are given on page 67.Airbag system*The warning light comes on for a few sec-
onds when ignition is switched on.
If the lamp does not go out or if it comes on
again when driving, there is a fault in the
system. This is also valid if the warning light
does not come on when switching on the
ignition. Further information see page 103.
Text in the information display*: AIRBAG
FAULT (fault at airbag)
The operational readiness of the airbag
system is monitored electronically, also on
deactivated front passenger airbag or side
airbag.
WarningIf you do not pay attention to the warn-
ing lights coming on and the corre-
sponding descriptions and warning
notes, this may result in severe body
injuries or major vehicle damage. The engine compartment of your car
is a hazardous area. There is a risk of injuries, scalding,
accidents and fire when working in the
engine compartment, e.g. inspecting
and replenishing oil and other fluids.Absolutely pay attention to the warn-
ing notes - see page 137.
57
CONTROLS AND EQUIPMENT
If the front or side airbag was deacti-
vated with the switch in the glove box:
- the warning light comes on for 3 secondswhen the ignition is switched on;
- the deactivation of the airbag is signaled by the warning light Airbag OFF coming
on in the front interior light
Warning
If a fault exists, have the airbag sys-
tem checked immediately by a Škoda
Dealer. Otherwise, there is a risk of
the airbag or the seat belt not being
activated in the event of an accident.
Trailer turn signal system*The warning light flashes if the turn signal
system is operated when towing a trailer.
If a turn signal light of the trailer or towing
vehicle fails, the warning light does not
flash.Low beamThe warning light comes on after the low
beam is switched on - see page 82.Fog lights*The warning light comes on when the fog
lights are switched on.Rear fog lightThe warning light comes on when the rear
fog light is switched on.
Testing engine electronics* EPC(fitted only to certain engines)
The warning light comes on for a few se-
conds when the ignition is switched on.
If the warning light does not go off or co-
mes on or flashes when driving, this indi-
cates a fault in the engine electronic sy-
stem. A program stored in the engine con-
trol unit makes it possible to continue dri-
ving with certain restrictions - contact a
Škoda Dealer for professional assistance.Glow plugs(diesel engines only)
If the engine is cold, the warning light co-
mes on when the preglow position „2“ (ig-
nition on) is switched on - see page 43. If
the warning light does not come on, there
is a fault in the glow plug system - contact
a Škoda Dealer for assistance. After the
light goes out, start the engine rightaway.
If the engine is warm, the glow plug warn-
ing light does not come on - the engine can
be started straightaway.
If the warning light flashes when driving,
there is a fault in the system.
Contact a Škoda Dealership for professio-
nal advice.
60CONTROLS AND EQUIPMENTOpening doors*If a door is open, this is indicated by this
warning light.
Vehicles with information display
As an additional warning signal, a peep
sounds if the car is driven at a speed of
more than 6km/hour and if the door or the
luggage compartment door is open.Washer fluid level*The warning light comes on if the washer
fluid level is too low. Top up washer fluid -
see page 151.
An audible warning signal also sounds (sin-
gle peep signal).Bulbs*This warning light comes on if the bulb of
the luminous element is faulty during:
Operation of brakes (brake light)
Malfunction of illumination (low beam (or
fog light)
An audible warning signal also sounds (sin-
gle peep signal)
Testing engine electronics*The warning light comes on when the igni-
tion is switched on.
If the warning light does not go out after
starting the engine, or comes on or flashes
when driving, this indicates a fault in the
engine electronics system or in systems
which influence exhaust emissions. A pro-
gramme stored in the engine control unit
makes it possible to continue driving with
certain restrictions - contact a Škoda dealer
for professional help.Electronic stability
program (ESP)*The warning light comes on for a few se-
conds when the ignition is switched on.
The ESP system also includes the traction
control system (TCS).
The light flashes when driving if the system
has activated a control cycle.
The warning light will come on and remain
on if the system is switched off or if a sy-
stem fault exists.
As the ESP system operates in combination
with the ABS, EDL and EBC, the ESP warn-
ing light also comes on if the ABS system fails.
Further details are given on pages 84 and
122 - 124.
Traction control system (TCS)*The warning light comes on for a few se-
conds when the ignition is switched on.
The light flashes when driving if the system
has activated a control cycle.
The warning light will come on and remain
on if the system is switched off or if a sy-
stem fault exists.
As the TCS system operates in combinati-
on with the ABS, EDL and EBC, the TCS
warning light also comes on if the ABS sy-
stem fails.
Further details are given on pages 65 and
122 - 124.Anti-lock brake system (ABS)*The warning light monitors the ABS, or ABS
and EDL* system.
The ABS warning light should come on for
a few seconds when the ignition is switched
on. If the ABS warning light does not go off
after a few seconds, if it does not come on
at all, or comes on when driving, the sys-
tem is not operating properly. The car is
braked in this case without operation of the
ABS; only the normal brake system then
operates. Contact a Škoda Dealer as
soon as possible and adapt your style
of driving to the fault which exists for
you cannot know the extent of the pro-
blem.
62CONTROLS AND EQUIPMENTSwitchesLight switchNotes
The position of the switches differs on
right-hand drive vehicles. The symbols on
the switches are, however, the same as on
vehicles with left-hand drive.
Use of the lighting described here is
subject to the legal regulations of the coun-
try concerned.
If the side lights are not switched off af-
ter withdrawing the ignition key, an audible
signal sounds as a reminder as soon as the
driver’s door is opened.
The warning signal of the buzzer is swit-
ched off by the door contact when the driv-
er’s door is closed (ignition off) allowing the
car to be parked with the side lights on.
0 - Off
1 - Side lights
2 - Low beamLow beam and main beam operate only if
the ignition is switched on.
The headlights are switched automatically
to side lights when starting the engine and
after switching off the ignition.
For switching the headlights between low
beam and main beam and using the head-
light flasher - see page 67.3 - Instrument lighting*If the car lights are switched on, the inten-
sity of the instrument lighting can be
steplessly varied by then turning this knob.
Warning
Never drive with side lights on - risk
of accident!
The side lights are not bright enough
to light up the road sufficiently in
front of you or to be seen by other
oncoming traffic.
Therefore always switch on the low
beam when it is dark or when visibil-
ity is poor.
63
CONTROLS AND EQUIPMENT
Fog lights*The fog lights are switched on by pull-
ing the switch into position A.
The fog lights come on if the side lights,
low or main beam are switched on.Rear fog lightThe rear fog light is switched on by pull-
ing the switch into position B.
The rear fog light comes on if the low or
main beam is selected or if the front fog
lights are switched on (depends on the
national version). The rear fog light should
only be switched on if visibility is poor, be-
cause of the risk of dazzling a driver be-
hind.
Notes
The rear fog light is incorporated in the
rear light of the driver’s side.
The electrical system of the towing de-
vice fitted for certain countries is designed
to automatically switch off the rear fog light
of the car when towing a trailer fitted with a
rear fog light.
1 - Hazard warning system
2 - Rear window heater/Exte-
rior mirror heater
3 - ESP/TCS*
(The switch applies to the
ESP or TCS, depending on the sys-
tem fitted. See pages 64 and 65 for
further information on ESP and TCS.
4 - Thumbwheel for front seat heater*
5 - Remote fuel filler flap re- leased from driver’s seat*
1 - Hazard warning systemIf the hazard warning system is switched
on, all the turn signal lights of the car flash
at the same time. The warning light for the
turn signals and the warning light in the
switch also flash. The system operates
even if the ignition is switched off.2 - Rear window heaterThe heating operates only if the ignition is
switched on. When the heater is operating,
the warning light in the switch comes on.
After the rear window heater is switched on,
the heaters of the exterior mirrors are also
switched on on models fitted with power
windows.
The rear window heater switches off au-
tomatically after 20 minutes.
If you press the switch once again, the
rear window heater is switched on perma-
nently - the automatic deactivation is thus
deactivated.
As soon as the rear window is clear, switch off the heater. The reduced
current consumption improves your fuel consumption - see also page 118.

66CONTROLS AND EQUIPMENTEmergency release of fuel filler flap
If the remote release at the driver’s seat*
does not operate properly, it is possible to
unlock the fuel filler flap manually:
Open tailgate, detach the luggage com-
partment trim on the right and pull off.
Then, push the locking rod in direction
of arrow - see illustration.
Headlight range controlIf the low beam is switched on, it can be
matched exactly to the load of the vehi-
cle with the headlight range control.
You can turn the knurled wheel until the
low beam has been adjusted in such a way
that other road users are not dazzled.
The individual headlight beam settings cor-
respond approximately to the following ve-
hicle load:
- - driver, front passenger
I - 5 persons
II - 5 persons and an additional 180 kg in
the luggage compartment, in line with the
permissible load of the front and rear axles
III - driver and an additional 330 kg in the
luggage compartment, in line with the per-
missible load of the front and rear axles.
Warning
Adjust the headlight beam control,
so that the traffic on the opposite
side is not dazzled.
Headlights fitted with Xenon bulbs adapt
automatically to the load and driving
state (e.g. accelerating, braking) when
ignition is switched on and when driv-
ing.
