Whenreversegearisselected,theparkingassistantconfirmsthatitisswitchedonbyissuingashortsignaltone.
Adetectedobstacleissignalledbyanintermit-tenttone.Theintervalsdecreaseastheobstacleisapproached.
Acontinuoustonesoundswhenthedistancebecomeslessthanonefoot.Thiscontinuoustonecanstopiftheobstacleisapproachedcloserthanonefoot.
Theradiovolumeshouldnotbesoloudastodrownoutthesignaltones.
Limitsofultrasonicmeasurement
Theparkingassistantsystemcannotdetect:
–sound-absorbingobstacles(e.g.winteroperation,powdersnow),
–sound-reflectingobstacles(e.g.glasssurfaces,flatpaintedsurfaces)
–andverythinobstacles.

Toavoidoverheatingandprematurewearofthebrakes:
Beforedescendingasteepgrade,reducespeedandshiftthetransmissionintoalowergearordrivingpositiontocontrolspeed.
Donot“ridethebrakes”byrestingyourfootonthepedalwhennotintendingtoapplybrakepressure.
Donotholdthepedaldowntoolongortoooften.Thiscouldcausethebrakestogethotandnotfunctionproperly.
Brakebooster
Thebrakeboosterassistsbrakingonlywhentheengineisrunning.
Whenthecarismovingwhiletheengineisnotrunning,orifthebrakeboosterisdefective,morepressureonthebrakepedalisrequiredtobringthecartoastop.Ifthishappens,ABSandPSMwillalsonotoperate.
Moistureorroadsaltonbrakesaffectsbraking.Whenthevehicleisdrivenonsaltedroadsforextendedperiods,thebrakesshouldbewasheddownthoroughlyaboutevery2weeks.Anauto-maticcarwashfacilitycannotdothisjobproperly.Brakeswilldryafterafewcautiousbrakeapplica-tions.

ABSBrakeSystem
(AntilockBrakeSystem)
TheABSsystemrepresentsamajorcontributiontotheenhancementofactivesafetyinyourvehicle.Thissystempreventsthewheelsfromlockinginapanicstoponalmostallroadsurfaces.
WiththeABSsysteminyourvehicle,the
followingareasareenhanced:
Steering,vehicleremainssteerableunderallbrakingforceswhenABSisengaged.
Gooddirectionalcontrol,noswervingcausedbylockingofwheelsunderbrakingconditions.
Shorterstoppingdistance,stoppingdistancesareusuallyreducedbecausecontrolledbrakingismaximized.
Preventionofwheellockup,nobrake-inducedslidingandthusnolocalizedtirewearfromemergencybraking.
ThecrucialadvantageoftheABSsystemoveraconventionalbrakesystemisintheareaofmaintainingdirectionalcontrolandmaneuverabilityofthecarinemergencysituations.

Theincreasedcontrolthatisprovidedshouldnotinduceyoutotakegreaterriskswithyoursafety.Thelimitsdictatedbythelawsofphysicscannotbeovercome,evenwithABS.Theriskofaccidentsduetoinappropriatespeedcannotbereduced,evenbytheABS.Thedriverbearstheresponsibilityforalldrivingmaneuvers.

OperationoftheABSsystem
Awheelspeedsensorismountedtoeachofthefourwheels.Ifwheellock-upofeitherofthefrontwheelsortherearwheelsissensedduringbraking,thebrakepressureisadjustedautomaticallyuntilthewheelnolongerslips.
Ifbrakingforcesapproachthewheellock-uppointforallwheels(panicbraking)theABSsystemwillintervenetoprovidearapidrythmicbraking.TheproperoperationofABSisperceivedbythedriverasapulsatingbrakepedalinconjunctionwithaudiblenoiseandperhapssomevibration.
Ifyouexperiencethesesensationswhiledrivingoraroadsurfacewithquestionabletraction,reducevehiclespeedappropriatefortheprevailingroadconditions.
Iffullbrakingshouldbenecessary,pressthebrakepedalallthewaydownthroughouttheentirebrakingprocedure,regardlessofthepulsatingpedal.Donoteaseuponpressureappliedtothepedal.
ThefunctionalreadinessofallthemainelectricalcomponentsoftheABSischeckedbyanelectronicmonitoringsystembothbeforeandwhileyoudrive.

interrogatedandgoesoutwhentheengineisstartedifthecheckisnotyetcomplete.IftheABSwarninglampfailstogoout,thisindicatesthatABShasbeendeactivatedduetoafault.Ifthewarninglightsintheinstrumentpanelandon-boardcomputerlightupwhileyouaredriving,thisindicatesthatafaulthasoccurred.Inbothcases,normalbraking,asinvehicleswithoutABS,isstillretained.
TheABSsystemshould,however,beexaminedatanauthorizedPorschedealerimmediatelytopreventtheoccurrenceoffurtherfaults.
IftheABSsystembecomesinoperative,takeyourvehicletoyourauthorizedPorschedealerimmediately.

Additionalfunctionsforvehicleswith
four-wheeldrive
–Pre-fillingthebrakesystem:Ifyousuddenlyandquicklytakeyourfootofftheacceleratorpedal,thebrakesystemgetspreparedforpossibleemergencybraking.Thebrakesystemispre-filledwhichlightlypressesthebrakepadsonthebrakediscs.
Brakeboost:Ifemergencybrakingdoesnothavesufficientpedalpressure,thebrakeboostproducesthebrakepressurenecessaryformaximumdecelerationonall4wheels.
ThePSMshouldalwaysbeswitchedon
during“normal”driving.
However,itmaybeadvantageoustoswitchoffPSMtemporarilyinexceptionalsituations,forexample:
–Onaloosesurfaceorindeepsnow,
–When“rockingthevehiclefree”and
–Whenusingsnowchains.
SwitchingoffPSM

InNormalmodetherunninggearisinasportyandcomfortablesetup.Sportmodeoffersamarkedlysportyshockabsorbertuning(e.g.fordrivingontheracecircuit).
Thevariablesuspensionsystemselectstheappro-priatedampinglevelforeachwheelaccordingtothesituationandconditionsofdriving.
Example:IfthevehicleisdriveninamarkedlysportymannerinNormalmode,PASMautomat-icallyadaptstheshock-absorberbehaviortothedrivingsituationinthiscaseaswell.
