Fadinganddrifting
FMrangeislimitedtoabout25miles(40km),exceptforsomehighpowerstations.
Ifavehicleismovingawayfromthedesiredstation’stransmitter,thesignalwilltendtofadeand/ordrift.ThisconditionismoreprevalentwithFMthanAM,andisoftenaccompaniedbydistortion.Fadinganddriftingcanbeminimizedtoacertaindegreebycarefulattentiontofinetuningorselectionofastrongersignal.
Staticanduttering
Whentheline-of-sightlinkbetweenatransmitterandvehicleisblockedbylargebuildingsormoun-tains,theradiosoundmaybeaccompaniedwithstaticorflutteringbecauseofthecharacteristicofFM.Inasimilareffect,aflutteringnoiseissome-timesheardwhendrivingalongatree-linedroad.
Thisstaticandflutteringcanbereducedbyadjust-ingthetonecontrolforgreaterbassresponseuntilthedisturbancehaspassed.
Multipath
BecauseofthereflectingcharacteristicsofFM,directandreflectedsignalsmayreachtheantennaatthesametime(multipath)andcanceleachotherout.Asavehiclemovesthroughtheseelectronicdeadspots,thelistenermayhearamomentaryflutterorlossofreception.
Stationswapping
WhentwoFMstationsareclosetoeachother,andanelectronicdeadspot,suchasstaticormultipatharea,interruptstheoriginalsignal,sometimes
thestrongersecondsignalwillbeselectedautomaticallyuntiltheoriginalonereturns.Thisswappingcanalsooccurasyoudriveawayfromtheselectedstationandapproachanotherstationofastrongersignal.
