2 Automatic transmission
*Problem Possible cause/consequence Suggested solutions
The transmission has problems
shifting gear The transmission is losing oil. X
Have the transmission checked at a qualified specialist workshop
immediately . The acceleration ability is deteri-
orating.
The transmission no longer
changes gear. The transmission is in emergenc
y
mode.
It is only possible to shift into
2nd gear and reverse gear. X
Stop the vehicle.
X Move the selector lever to P.
X Turn the key to position 0in the ignition lock .
X Wait at least 10 seconds before restarting the engine.
X Move the selector lever to position Dor R.
If D is selected, the transmission shifts into 2nd gear; if Ris selec -
ted, the transmission shifts into reverse gear .
X Have the transmission checked at a qualified specialist workshop
immediately . Practical advice

Using the wheel wrench, loosen the wheel
bolts on the wheel you wish to change by
about one full turn. Do not unscrew the
bolts completely. G
Risk of accident
If you fail to position the jack correctly, the
vehicle may :
R slip off the jack
R injure you or others
R be damaged
It is thus important to ensure that the jack
is positioned correctly in the respective
jacking points. Before positioning the jack ,
remove any dirt that may have collected in
the jacking points.
The jacking points for the jack are located
behind the wheel housings of the front wheels
and in front of the wheel housings of the rear
wheels (arrows). 1

X Position jack 2at jacking point 1. X
Make sure that the base of the jack is posi-
tioned directly under the jacking point.
X Turn the crank until the tyre is raised a
maximum of 3 cm from the ground .
X Unscrew the wheel bolts.
! Do not place wheel bolts in sand or on a
dirty surface. This could cause damage to
the bolt and wheel hub threads.
X Remove the wheel.
Fitting a new wheel G

In the unusual event that the:
R engine oil brand
R grade (MB sheet number)
R SAE classification (viscosity )
corresponding to the oil used in your engine
is not available, you can use another min-
eral or synthetic engine oil approved by
Mercedes-Benz. Mixing oils reduces the advantages of
high–grade engine oil
.
! Do not use lubricant additives, since they
lead to increased wear and damage to the
mechanical assemblies. The use of lubri-
cant additives will result in a restriction of
your warranty. !
Engine oils for vehicles without a diese l
particle filter may also be used temporarily
in vehicles with a diesel particle filter if the
engine oil listed is not available. You must
then have an oil change carried out as soon
as possible.

371Brake fluid
Over a period of time, the brake fluid absorbs
moisture from the air; this lowers its boiling
point. G
Risk of accident
If the boiling point of the brake fluid is too
low, vapour pockets may form in the brake
system when the brakes are applied hard
(e.g. when driving downhill). This woul d
impair braking efficiency.
Have the brake fluid renewed every two
years with a brake fluid that has been
approved by Mercedes-Benz and have this
confirmed in the Service Booklet.
i There is usually a notice in the engine
compartment to remind you when the next
brake fluid change is due. Windscreen washer system
The washer fluid reservoir holds approxi-
mately 4.0 litres.
The headlamp cleaning system* and the
windscreen washer system are both supplied
from the washer fluid reservoir.
X At temperatures above freezing point:
Top up the washer fluid reservoir with a
mixture of water and windscreen washer
concentrate (Y page 210).
X At temperatures below freezing point:
Top up the washer fluid reservoir with a
mixture of water, antifreeze and wind-
screen washer concentrate (Y page 210).
Adapt the mixing ratio to the outside tem-
peratures . G
Risk of fire
Windscreen washer concentrate is highly
flammable. Fire, naked flames and smoking
are prohibited when windscreen washe r
concentrate is being handled. Technical data
