CHECKING THE BATTERY

WARNING:
Batteries can be dangerous! When working with batteries, carefullyobserve the following precautions to avoid serious injuries. The fluid in the battery contains a
strong solution of sulfuric acid, which is poisonous and highly corrosive. Be careful not to spill it on yourself or thecar. If you do spill battery fluid on yourself, immediately do the follow- ing: o If battery fluid is on your skin, flush
the affected areas with water for atleast 15 minutes and then seek medical assistance.
o If battery fluid is in your eyes, rinse out your eyes with water and getmedical assistance as soon as possible. While you are being drivento get medical assistance, continue to rinse your eyes by using a sponge or soft cloth saturated withwater.
o If you swallow battery fluid, drink a large quantity of water or milk fol- lowed by milk of magnesia, eat a raw egg or drink vegetable oil. Getmedical assistance as soon as possible.
While batteries are being charged
(either by a battery charger or by the vehicle's alternator), they produce explosive gases. Always observe these warnings to prevent injuries fromoccurring:
o Charge batteries only in a well ven- tilated area.
o Do not permit flames, sparks or
smoking in the area.
o Keep children away from the area.

Checking the Battery
Keep the battery clean. Any evidence
of corrosion around the battery posts or terminals should be removed using a solution of household baking sodaand warm water. After the battery terminals are dry, cover them with a light coating of grease.
WARNING:Always read the followinginstructions carefullywhen handling a battery.Keep lighted cigarettesand all other flames orsparks away from the bat- tery. Hydrogen, which is a highly combustible gas, is always present in batterycells and may explode if ignited.

o Always double check to be sure that the bonnet is firmly latched before driving away. If it is not latched, the bonnet could fly openwhilst the vehicle is being driven, causing a total loss of visibility, which might result in an acci-dent.
o Do not move the vehicle with the
bonnet in the raised position, asvision is obstructed and the bon- net could fall or be damaged.
When closing the bonnet, slowly close the bonnet and make sure it locks intoplace.
REMOTE FUEL FILLER FLAP RELEASE
B560A01MC-EAT The fuel filler flap may be opened from inside the vehicle by pulling up on thefuel filler flap release. NOTE: If the fuel-filler flap will not open because ice has formed around it,lightly tap or push on the lid to break the ice and release the lid. Do not lever the flap. If necessary, sprayaround the flap with an approved de- icer fluid (do not use radiator anti- freeze) or move the vehicle to awarmer area and allow the ice to melt.

o Fuel vapors are dangerous. Be- fore refueling, always stop the en- gine and never allow sparks oropen flames near the filler area. If you need to replace the filler cap, use a genuine Hyundai replace-ment part. If you open the fuel filler cap dur- ing high ambient temperatures, aslight "pressure sound" may be heard. This is normal and not a cause for concern.Whenever you open the fuel filler cap, turn it slowly.

o Automotive fuels are flammable/
explosive materials. When refuel- ing, please note the following guidelines carefully. Failure tofollow these guidelines may re- sult in severe personal injury, se- vere burns or death by fire orexplosion.
- Before refueling always note the
location of the Emergency Fuel Shut-Off, if available, at the fuel station facility.
- Before touching the fuel nozzle or fuel filler cap, you shouldeliminate potentially dangerous static electricity discharge bytouching another metal part of the front of the vehicle, a safe distance away from the fuel fillerneck, nozzle, or other fuel source.
- Do not get back into a vehicle once you have begun refueling.Do not touch, rub or slide against any item or fabric (polyester,satin, nylon, etc.) capable of pro- ducing static electricity. Static electricity discharge can ignitefuel vapors resulting in explo sion.If you must re-enter the vehicle, you should once again elimi- nate potentially dangerous staticelectricity discharge by touch- ing a metal part of the vehicle, away from the fuel filler neck,nozzle or other fuel source.
- When using a portable fuel con-
tainer be sure to place the con-tainer on the ground prior to refueling. Static electricity dis- charge from the container canignite fuel vapors causing a fire. Once refueling has begun, con- tact with the vehicle should bemaintained until the filling is complete. Use only portable fuel containers designed to carry andstore fuel.
- Do not use cellular phones
around a fuel station or whilstrefueling any vehicle. Electric current and/or electronic inter- ference from cellular phones canpotentially ignite fuel vapors causing a fire. If you must use your cellular phone use it in aplace away from the fuel station. - When refueling always shut the
engine off. Sparks produced by electrical components related to the engine can ignite fuel va-pors causing a fire. Always in- sure that the engine is OFF be- fore and during refueling. Oncerefueling is complete, check to make sure the fuel filler cap and door are securely closed, beforestarting the engine.
- Do not light any fire around a
fuel station. DO NOT use matchesor a lighter and DO NOT SMOKE or leave a lit cigarette in your vehicle whilst at a gas stationespecially during refueling. Automotive fuel is highly flam- mable and can, when ignited,result in explosion by flames.
- If a fire breaks out during refuel-
ing, leave the vicinity of the ve-hicle, and immediately contact the manager of the fuel station or contact the police and localfire department. Follow any safety instructions they provide.

1. Check fuel level.
2. With the key in the off position,
Check all connectors at ignition coils and spark plugs. Reconnect any that may be disconnected or loose.
3. Check the fuel line in the engine room.
4. If engine still refuses to start, call a Hyundai authorised repairer or seek other qualified assistance.

1. Reduce your speed gradually, keep- ing a straight line. Move cautiously off the road to a safe place.
2. Turn on your hazard lights.
3. Try to start the engine again. If your vehicle will not start, contact aHyundai authorised repairer or seekother qualified assistance. SD030A2-E

JUMP STARTING
WARNING:
Motor vehicle batteries contain sulphuric acid and emit hydrogen gas. Protective clothing should beworn and care exercised to prevent the acid from coming into contact with skin or clothing and the ve-hicle. Naked lights should not be permitted in the vicinity of the bat- tery. Care should be exercised toprevent sparks occurring during connection. If acid accidentally comes into contact with skin oreyes, the affected area should im- mediately be flushed with copious amounts of water and medical as-sistance sought.

7. Switch "ON" the main beam
headlamps before carefully remov- ing the jumper cables have been removed, switch "OFF" the main beam headlamps. SD040A2-E If the temperature gauge indicates overheating:
1. Pull off the road and stop as soon as
it is safe to do so.
2. Place the gear selector lever in "P"
(automatic), or neutral (manual transaxle) and set the parking brake. If the air conditioning is on, turn it off.
3. If coolant is running out under the car or steam is coming out fromunder the bonnet stop the engine. Do not open the bonnet until thecoolant has stopped running or the steaming has stopped. If there is no visible loss of coolant and no steam,leave the engine running and check to be sure the engine cooling fan is operating.If the fan is not running, turn the engine off.
4. Check to see if the water pump drive belt is broken. If it is not missing,check to see that it is tight. If the drive belt seems to be satisfactory,check for coolant leaking from the radiator, hoses or under the car. (If the air conditioning had been in use,it is normal for cold water to be draining from it).
IF THE ENGINE OVERHEATS
1. Ensure that the booster battery is 12 volt type. If the booster battery is installed in another vehicle, ensure that the two vehicles are not touch- ing.
2. Turn off all unnecessary electrical equipment in both vehicles.
3. Ensure that the engine of the ve- hicle providing the jump start is run- ning prior to connection of the jump cables.
4. Connect the red jump cable to the positive (+) terminal of the boosterbattery and the other end to thepositive (+) terminal of the dis- charged battery.
5. Attach the black jump cable to the negative (-) terminal of the boosterbattery, and the other end to a ground point within the engine compartmentof the vehicle with the flat battery. Do not connect to the negative battery terminal of the flat battery sincesparks may be generated with the subsequent risk of explosion.
6. Raise the booster vehicle engine speed to 2,000 r.p.m. and start theengine of the vehicle with the flat battery. CAUTION:
If the jump cables are incorrectlyinstalled, damage to the vehicle elec-trical system may occur, in particu- lar the electronic components such as the Fuel Injection system com- puter and the Automatic Transaxle computer. The battery must neverbe disconnected whilst the engine is running.

o Crankcase ventilation hoses
Inspect the surface of hoses for evi- dence of heat and/or mechanical dam- age. Hard and brittle rubber, cracking, tears, cuts, abrasions, and excessiveswelling indicate deterioration. Particu- lar attention should be paid to examin- ing those hose surfaces nearest tohigh heat sources, such as the ex- haust manifold. Inspect the hose routing to assure that the hoses do not come in contact with any heat source, sharp edges or mov-ing component which might cause heat damage or mechanical wear. Inspect all hose connections, such as clampsand couplings, to make sure they are secure, and that no leaks are present.
