To close the bonnet fig. 83
Hold the bonnet up with one hand and,
with the other, remove rod Bfrom recess
Dand replace it in its clip C;
Lower the bonnet until it is about 20 cm
above the engine compartment, then let it
fall and make sure it is properly locked and
not just secured in safety position. In this
case do not press the bonnet but raise it
again and repeat the operation.
For safety reasons the bon-
net must be closed properly
to avoid its opening while the car is
travelling. Therefore, always check it
is properly closed and the catch en-
gaged. Should you notice that the
catch is not perfectly engaged when
travelling, stop the car immediately
and close the bonnet.
WARNING
If checks are needed in the
engine compartment, when
it is still hot, proceed with the utmost
care to avoid burns. Do not approach
the fan: it might start working also
with the ignition key removed. Wait
for the engine cool down.
WARNING
Scarves, ties and other loose
articles of clothing could
easily get caught up in moving parts.
This can be extremely dangerous.

The car is fitted with an electrical device
for correcting the headlight slant. The de-
vice can be operated with the ignition key
at MARand the dipped beam headlights
are on.
When the car is loaded, it slopes back-
wards. This means the headlight beam ris-
es.
In this case, it is necessary to return it to
the correct position using buttons +and

IMPORTANT After eliminating the in-
convenience, to check the system com-
pletely, Fiat Dealerships are obliged to run
a bench test and, if necessary, road tests
which may also call for a long journey.
“DUALDRIVE” ELECTRIC
POWER STEERING
SYSTEM
(where provided)
Certain versions feature a new electrical-
ly controlled power steering system called
“Dualdrive” working only with ignition key
at MARand engine running, that can be
customised by the driver according to the
driving conditions.
IMPORTANT When turning quickly the
ignition key, power steering full operation
is obtained after 1-2 seconds.
EOBD SYSTEM (petrol
versions)
The EOBD system (European On Board
Diagnosis) allows continuous diagnosis of
the components of the car correlated with
emissions. It also alerts the driver, by turn-
ing on the warning light
Ufig. 91on the
instrument panel together with relevant
message on the reconfigurable multifunc-
tion display (where provided), when these
conditions are no longer in peak condi-
tions (see section “Warning lights and
messages”).
The objective is:
❒to keep the system efficiency under
control;
❒warn when a fault causes emissions lev-
els to increase;
❒warn of the need to replace deterio-
rated components.
The system has a diagnostic connector
that can be interfaced with appropriate
tools, which makes it possible to read the
error codes stored in the control unit, to-
gether with a series of specific parameters
for engine operation and diagnosis.
This check can also be performed by traf-
fic controller agents.

MAR, the warning light Udoes not turn on or if, while
travelling it turns on glowing
steadily or flashing (together with the
message on the reconfigurable multi-
function display (where provided), con-
tact Fiat Dealership as soon as possi-
ble. Warning light
Uoperation can be
checked by means of special equip-
ment by traffic agents. Always comply
with the traffic regulations in force in
the country where you are travelling.

MANUALLY DEACTIVATING
THE PASSENGER’S FRONT
AIR BAG
Should it be absolutely necessary to car-
ry a child on the front seat, the passenger’s
air bag on the car can be deactivated.
Deactivation/reactivation takes place with
ignition key at STOPand operating it in
the special key switch in the glovebox.
The key can be fitted and extracted in
both positions.
IMPORTANT Operate the switch only
when the engine is not running and the ig-
nition key is removed. PASSENGER’S FRONT AIR BAG
fig. 17
It consists of an instant-inflating cushion
contained in a special recess in the dash-
board; its volume is bigger than the dri-
ver’s one.
fig. 17F0G0057m
SERIOUS DANGER: Never
place cradle child’s seats on
the front passenger seat of
cars fitted with passenger
air bag. Air bag activation
could cause serious injuries,
even mortal. In the case of need, al-
ways deactivate the passenger’s air
bag when a child’s seat is placed on
the front seat. The front passenger’s
seat shall be adjusted in the most
backward position to prevent any
contact between child’s seat and
dashboard. Even if not compulsory by
law, you are recommended to reacti-
vate the air bag immediately as soon
as child transport is no longer neces-
sary.

DEVICES
Do not wash the seat back
rest with pressurised water
or steam (by hand or at automatic
seat washing stations).
WARNING
The front air bag is triggered
for shocks greater in magni-
tude that the pretensioners. For im-
pacts between these two thresholds,
it is therefore normal that only the
pretensioners are triggered.
WARNING
Do not hook rigid objects to
the coat hooks and to the
support handles.
WARNING
The air bag does not substi-
tute the seat belts, but only
increases their effectiveness. More-
over, since the front air bags do not
come into operation in the event of
front impact at low speed, side colli-
sions, bumps from behind or over-
turning, in these circumstances the
occupants would only be protected
by the seat belts which must therefore
always be fastened.
WARNING
When the ignition key is
turned to the MAR position,
the warning light F(with passen-
ger’s front air bag deactivation switch
in the ON position) turns on and
flashes for few seconds to remind that
the passenger’s air bag will be de-
ployed in a crash, after which it
should go off.
