RESPECTING THE ENVIRONMENT
A system for continuously monitoring emission system components to ensure greater environmental
protection is fitted in your car.
MUST BE READ!
ENGINE STARTING
Petrol engines:make sure that the handbrake is engaged; set the gearshift lever to neutral; fully depress
the clutch without pressing the accelerator, then turn the ignition key to AVV and release it as soon as
the engine has started.
Diesel engines:make sure that the handbrake is engaged; set the gearshift lever to neutral; fully depress
the clutch without pressing the accelerator, then turn the ignition key to MAR and wait for the
Yand
mwarning lights to go off; turn the ignition key to AVV and release it as soon as the engine has started.
PARKING ON FLAMMABLE MATERIAL
While working, the catalyst develops a very high temperature. Do not park the car over grass, dry leaves,
pine needles or any other inflammable materials: risk of fire.
REFUELLING
Petrol engines:only refuel with unleaded petrol with octane rating (RON) not less than 95.
Diesel engines:only refuel with diesel fuel conforming to the European specification EN590.
The use of other products or mixtures may irreparably damage the engine with invalidation of the warranty
due to the damage caused.
K
TO INCREASE THE MEMORISED SPEED
The speed memorised can be increased in two ways:
❒pressing the accelerator and then memorising the
new speed reached;
or
❒moving the stalk upwards (+).
Each operation of the stalk will correspond to a slight
increase in speed (about 1 km/h), while keeping the
stalk upwards continuously will correspond to a
continuous speed increase.

TO MEMORISE SPEED
Proceed as follows:
❒turn the knurled ring (A) to ON and press the
accelerator pedal to the required speed;
❒move the stalk upwards (+) for at least three
seconds, then release it. The car speed is
memorised and it is therefore possible to release
the accelerator pedal.
In the case of need (when overtaking for instance)
acceleration is possible simply pressing the accelerator
pedal: releasing the accelerator pedal, the car will
return to the speed memorised previously.
TO RESET THE MEMORISED SPEED
If the device has been disengaged for example pressing
the brake or clutch pedal, the memorised speed can
be reset as follows:
❒accelerate gradually until reaching a speed
approaching the one memorised;
❒engage the gear selected at the time of speed
memorising (4th or 5th gear);
❒press the RES button (B).
TO REDUCE MEMORISED SPEED
The speed memorised can be increased in two ways:
❒disengaging the device and then memorising the
new speed;
or
❒moving the stalk downwards (–) until reaching the
new speed which will be memorised automatically.
Each operation of the stalk will correspond to a slight
reduction in speed (about 1 km/h), while keeping the
stalk downwards continuously will correspond to a
continuous speed reduction.DEVICE DISENGAGEMENT
Turn the ring (A) to OFF or the ignition key to STOP.
The device is automatically deactivated also in one of
the following cases:
❒pressing the brake or clutch pedal.

WARNING
In the event of device malfunction or failure, turn the knurled ring (A) to OFF and
contact a Fiat Dealership after checking the protective fuse integrity.WARNING
When travelling with the device on, do not put the gearbox lever in neutral.
ENGINE STARTING
The car is fitted with an electronic engine lock device.
If the engine fails to start, see paragraph “Fiat CODE
system” in section “Dashboard and controls”.
The engine may be noisier than usual during the first
seconds of operation, especially after it has not been
used for a while. This characteristic feature of the
hydraulic tappet system does not compromise
functionality or reliability. The system devised for the
Fiat Idea was designed to limit maintenance
interventions.STARTING PROCEDURE FOR PETROL
VERSIONS
Proceed as follows:
❒Ensure that the handbrake is up;
❒Put the gear lever into neutral;
❒Press the clutch pedal down to the floor without
touching the accelerator;
❒Turn the ignition key to AVV and let it go the
moment the engine starts.
If the engine does not start at the first attempt, return
the ignition key to STOP before repeating starting.
If, when the ignition key is on MAR, warning light
Y
remains lit together with warning light U, turn the
key to STOP and then back to MAR; if the warning
light remains on, try with the other keys provided with
the car.

CORRECT USE
OF THE CAR
We recommend that during the initial period you do not drive to full vehicle performance (e.g.:
excessive acceleration, long journeys at top speed, sharp braking, etc.).
When the engine is switched off never leave the ignition key in the MAR position to prevent
pointless current absorption from draining the battery.
WARNINGRunning the engine in confined areas is extremely dangerous. The engine consumes
oxygen and produces carbon monoxide which is a highly toxic and lethal gas.
If you are still unable to start the engine, perform the
emergency start-up procedure (see “Emergency start-
up” in section “In an emergency”) and contact Fiat
Dealership.
IMPORTANT Never leave the ignition key at MAR
when the engine is off.
STARTING PROCEDURE FOR MULTIJET
VERSIONS
Proceed as follows:
❒Ensure that the handbrake is up;
❒Put the gear lever into neutral;
❒Turn the ignition key to MAR: the warning lights
m, Uand Ywill light up on the instrument
panel;
❒Wait for the warning lights
Yand m. The
hotter the engine is, the quicker this will happen;
❒Press the clutch pedal down to the floor without
touching the accelerator;❒Turn the ignition key to AVV as soon as warning
light
mgoes out. If you wait too long you will
lose the benefit of the work done by the glow
plugs. Release the key as soon as the engine starts.
IMPORTANT With cold engine, the accelerator pedal
shall be completely released while turning the ignition
key to AVV.
If the engine does not start at the first attempt, return
the ignition key to STOP before repeating starting.
If, when the ignition key is on MAR, warning light Y
remains lit, turn the key to STOP and then back to
MAR; if the warning light remains on, try with the
other keys provided with the car.
If you still cannot start the engine, contact Fiat
Dealership.
IMPORTANT Never leave the ignition key at MAR
when the engine is off.

CORRECT USE
OF THE CAR
The warning light mwill flash for 60 seconds at start-up or during prolonged cranking to signal a
fault in the glow plug heating system. You can use the car as usual if the engine starts but you should
contact a Fiat Dealership as soon as possible.
USING THE GEARBOX
To engage the gears, press the clutch pedal fully and shift the gear lever
into one of the required positions (the diagram is shown on the knob).
IMPORTANT The car can only be put into reverse gear when it has
stopped moving completely. With the engine running, before engaging the
reverse, wait at least 2 seconds with the clutch pedal fully down to
prevent damage and grating of the gears.
To engage 6
thgear (where fitted), press the lever to the right to prevent
engaging 4thgear by mistake. A similar action is required to shift down
from 6thto 5th
To engage reverse (R) from neutral, lift the sliding ring (A) under the
knob and shift the lever to the right and back (only for petrol versions).
For Multijet versions, just shift lever to the right and back.

To change gears properly you must push the clutch pedal fully down. It is therefore
essential that there is nothing under the pedals: make sure mats are lying flat and do
not get in the way of the pedals.WARNING
Do not drive with your hand resting on the gear lever as the force exerted, even if slight, could lead
over time to premature wear on the gearbox internal components.
DRIVING STYLE
Starting
Do not warm the engine with the car at a standstill or
at idle or high speed: under these conditions the
engine warms up much more slowly, increasing
electrical consumption and emissions. It is therefore
advisable to move off immediately, slowly, avoiding
high speeds. This way the engine will warm faster.
Unnecessary actions
Avoid accelerating when waiting at traffic lights or
before switching off the engine. This and also double
declutching is absolutely pointless on modern cars and
also increase consumption and pollution.
Gear selection
As soon as the conditions of the traffic and road allow,
use a higher gear. Using a low gear to obtain brilliant
performance increases consumption.
In the same way improper use of a high gear increases
consumption, emissions an engine wear.
Top speed
Fuel consumption considerably increases with speed.
Keep speed as constant as possible, avoid superfluous
braking and accelerating, which cost in terms of both
fuel and emissions. Acceleration
Accelerating violently increasing the revs will greatly
affect consumption and emissions: acceleration should
be gradual and should not exceed the maximum
torque.
CONDITIONS OF USE
Cold starting
Short journeys and frequent cold starts do not allow
the engine to reach optimum operating temperature.
This results in a significant increase in consumption
levels (from +15 to +30% on the urban cycle) and
emission of harmful substances.
Traffic situations and road conditions
Rather high consumption levels are tied to situations
with heavy traffic, for example in queues with frequent
use of the lower gears or in cities with many traffic
lights. Also winding mountain roads and rough road
surfaces adversely affect consumption.
Traffic hold-ups
During prolonged hold-ups (e.g.: level crossings) the
engine should be switched off.
