FUEL TANK PLUG fig. 98
To refuel open the flap Aand unscrew the
plug B. The plug is provided with a loss
prevention device Cwhich secures it to
the flap, thus making it impossible to lose.
The plug Bis provided with a lock and key.
To access it open the flap A, turn the igni-
tion key anticlockwise and loosen the plug.
When refuelling, fasten the plug to the de-
vice inside the lid as shown in the figure.
ENVIRONMENTAL
PROTECTION
The devices for curtailing petrol engine
emissions are the following:
❒three-way catalytic converter;
❒Lambda sensors;
❒fuel evaporation prevention system.
In addition, do not let the engine run, even
for a test, with one or more spark plugs
disconnected.
The devices for curtailing diesel fuel en-
gine emissions are the following:
❒oxidising catalytic converter;
❒exhaust gas recirculation system
(E.G.R.);
❒diesel particulate filter (DPF) (where
provided).

Do not place free flames or lit
cigarettes near to the fuel
filler: this may pose a risk of
fire. Keep your face away
from the fuel filler to prevent breath-
ing in harmful vapours.
DIESEL PARTICULATE
FILTER DPF
(Diesel Particulate Filter)
(where provided)
The Diesel Particulate Filter is a mechan-
ical filter integral with the exhaust system
that physically traps carbon particles pre-
sent in the exhaust gases of Diesel engines.
The diesel particulate filter has been
adopted to eliminate particulates almost
totally in compliance with current / future
law regulations. During normal use of the
vehicle, the engine control unit records a
set of data (e.g.: travel time, type of route,
temperatures, etc.) and it will then calcu-
late the amount of particles trapped by the
filter.
Since this filter physically traps particulates,
it shall be cleaned (reclaimed) at regular
intervals by burning carbon particles. The
regeneration procedure is controlled au-
tomatically by the engine control unit ac-
cording to the filter conditions and the
conditions of use of the vehicle.
During the regeneration procedure, the
following situations may occur: limited in-
crease of idle speed, activation of electric
fan, limited increase of smoke, high tem-
peratures at the exhaust. These events
must not be considered as a malfunction-
ing: they do not impair vehicle behaviour
and the environment. If the dedicated
message is displayed, refer to section
“Warning lights and messages”.

(where provided)
(Multijet versions)
(amber)
When the ignition key is moved to MAR,
the warning light turns on and should go
off after a few seconds.
The warning light turns on when the diesel
particulate filter is clogged and the driving
conditions do not enable automatic acti-
vation of the regeneration procedure.
To allow the regeneration procedure and
clean the filter, keep the vehicle running
until the warning light turns off.
The display will show the dedicated mes-
sage.FUEL RESERVE
(amber)
When the ignition key is moved
to MAR, the warning light turns on and
should go off after a few seconds.
The warning light turns on when about 6
to 7 litres of fuel are left in the tank.
IMPORTANT The warning light flashes to
indicate a system failure. If this is the case,
go to a Fiat Dealership to have the system
checked.GLOW PLUG HEATING

Glow plug heating
The warning light goes on when the key is
turned to MAR. It goes out as soon as the
glow plugs have reached the preset tem-
perature. Start the engine as soon as the
warning light goes out.
IMPORTANT At high ambient tempera-
tures the warning light stays on for an ex-
tremely short time.
Glow plug heating failure
The warning light flashes in the event of
a failure in the glow plug heating system.
Go to a Fiat Dealership as soon as possi-
ble.
On certain versions the dedicated mes-
sage is displayed.

FUEL FILTER
(Multijet versions)
(amber)
When the ignition key is moved to MAR,
the warning light turns on and should go

The warning light cturns on when there
is water in the diesel fuel filter.
On certain versions the dedicated mes-
sage is displayed.VEHICLE PROTECTION
SYSTEM FAILURE -
FIAT CODE (amber)
Turning the key to MAR, the
warning light flashes once and then goes
off.
If with the ignition key at MAR, the warn-
ing light stays on, this indicates a possible
failure (see “Fiat Code system” in section
“Dashboard and controls”).
On certain versions the dedicated mes-
sage is displayed.
IMPORTANT Warning lights Uand Y
will come on at the same time to indicate
a Fiat CODE system failure.
If with the engine running the warning light
Yflashes, the vehicle is not protected by
the engine inhibitor device (see “Fiat Code
system” in section “Dashboard and con-
trols”).
Contact the Fiat Dealership to have all the
keys stored.EXTERNAL LIGHTS
FAILURE
(amber)
The warning light comes on (on some ver-
sions only) when a failure is detected in
one of the following lights:
– side/taillights
– stop lights
– rear fog lights
– direction indicators
– plate lights.
The fault identified in the lights above may
be due to: one or more burnt lamps, a
blown protection fuse or interruption of
the electrical connection.
On certain versions warning light èturns
on as an alternative.
On certain versions the dedicated mes-
sage is displayed. The presence of water in the
supply circuit may cause se-
vere damage to the injection
system and irregular engine
operation. If warning light clights up
(on some versions with the message on
the display), go to a Fiat Dealership as
soon as possible to have the system
bled. Water may have been introduced
in the tank if this appears immediately
after refuelling: in this case, stop the en-
gine immediately and contact a Fiat
Dealership.

PERIODIC CHECKING
Every 1,000 km or before long journeys,
check and top up if required:
❒engine coolant fluid level;
❒brake fluid level;
❒windscreen washer fluid level;
❒tyre pressure and conditions;
❒operation of lights (headlights, direction
indicators, emergency lights, etc.);
❒operation of the windscreen wiper/
washer system, position and wear of
the windscreen and rear window wiper
blades (where provided);
Every 3,000 km check the following and
top-up, if required: engine oil level.
You are recommended to use FL Sele-
niaproducts, designed and produced
specifically for Fiat vehicles (see table “Re-
fuelling” in section “Technical specifica-
tions”).
DEMANDING
VEHICLE USE
Should prevailing use of the vehicle be un-
der one of the following specially heavy
conditions:
❒trailer towing;
❒dusty roads;
❒short repeated distances (less than 7-
8 km) and with external temperatures
below zero;
❒frequently idling engine or long distance
low speed driving (e.g. taxis or door-to-
door deliveries) or in case of a long
term inactivity;
❒urban driving;
perform the following inspections more
frequently than shown on the Scheduled
Servicing Plan:
❒check front disk brake pad conditions
and wear;❒check cleanness of bonnet and boot
locks and lever cleanness and lubrica-
tion;
❒visually inspect the conditions of: the
engine, gearbox, transmission, pipes and
hoses (exhaust - fuel - brakes), rubber
parts (boots, sleeves, bushes, etc.);
❒check the battery and the battery fluid
(electrolyte) (this check must be car-
ried out by skilled personnel only or by
the Fiat Dealership – also refer to the
instructions provided in the “Battery”
paragraph of this section);
❒visually check the various drive belt
conditions;
❒check pollen filter and replace it, if re-
quired;
❒check air cleaner and replace it, if re-
quired.
