When to Inspect the Engine
Air Cleaner/Filters
Inspect the air cleaner/ lters at the MaintenanceII
intervals and replace them at the rst oil change
after each 50,000 mile (83 000 km) interval.
SeeScheduled Maintenance on page 433for
more information. If you are driving in dusty/dirty
conditions, inspect the lters at each engine
oil change.
How to Inspect the Engine
Air Cleaner/Filters (6.0L V8 Engine)
To inspect the air cleaner/ lters, remove the lters
from the vehicle and lightly shake the lters to
release loose dust and dirt. If the lters remain
caked with dirt, new lters are required.
To inspect or replace the engine air cleaner/ lters,
do the following:1. Pull the latches on each side of the cover to
open, then move the latches up and out of
the way.
2. Push the air cleaner/ lter cover toward the front
of the vehicle and then pull it up and away.
3. Inspect or replace the lter. SeeNormal
Maintenance Replacement Parts on page 445.
4. Reverse Steps 1 and 2 to replace the
air cleaner/ lter cover.
5. Repeat the procedure for the second
air cleaner/ lter.

If you no longer have the overheat warning,
you can drive. Just to be safe, drive slower for
about 10 minutes. If the warning does not
come back on, you can drive normally.
If the warning continues and you are not
stopped, pull over, stop, and park your vehicle
right away.
If there is still no sign of steam, you can idle the
engine for three minutes while you are parked.
If you still have the warning, turn off the engine
and get everyone out of the vehicle until it
cools down. Also, see “Overheated Engine
Protection Operating Mode” later in this section.
You may decide not to lift the hood but to get
service help right away.Overheated Engine Protection
Operating Mode
If an overheated engine condition exists and the
messages COOLANT OVER TEMPERATURE
and REDUCED ENGINE POWER are displayed,
along with the Check Engine light, an overheat
protection mode which alternates ring groups of
cylinders helps prevent engine damage. In
this mode, you will notice a loss in power and
engine performance. This operating mode allows
your vehicle to be driven to a safe place in an
emergency; you may drive up to 50 miles (80 km).
Notice:After driving in the overheated
engine protection operating mode, to avoid
engine damage, allow the engine to cool before
attempting any repair. The engine oil will be
severely degraded. Repair the cause of coolant
loss, change the oil and reset the oil life

Brake Wear
Your vehicle has four-wheel disc brakes.
Disc brake pads have built-in wear indicators that
make a high-pitched warning sound when the
brake pads are worn and new pads are needed.
The sound can come and go or be heard all
the time your vehicle is moving, except when you
are pushing on the brake pedal rmly.
{CAUTION:
The brake wear warning sound means that
soon the brakes will not work well. That
could lead to an accident. When you hear
the brake wear warning sound, have your
vehicle serviced.Notice:Continuing to drive with worn-out
brake pads could result in costly brake repair.
Some driving conditions or climates can cause
a brake squeal when the brakes are rst applied
or lightly applied. This does not mean something
is wrong with the brakes.
Brake linings should always be replaced as
complete axle sets.
Brake Pedal Travel
See your dealer/retailer if the brake pedal does
not return to normal height, or if there is a
rapid increase in pedal travel. This could be a
sign that brake service might be required.
Brake Adjustment
As you make brake stops, the disc brakes
automatically adjust for wear.

Tire Terminology and De nitions
Air Pressure:The amount of air inside the tire
pressing outward on each square inch of the
tire. Air pressure is expressed in pounds
per square inch (psi) or kilopascal (kPa).
Accessory Weight:This means the combined
weight of optional accessories. Some examples of
optional accessories are, automatic transmission,
power steering, power brakes, power windows,
power seats, and air conditioning.
Aspect Ratio:The relationship of a tire’s height
to its width.
Belt:A rubber coated layer of cords that is
located between the plies and the tread.
Cords may be made from steel or other
reinforcing materials.
Bead:The tire bead contains steel wires wrapped
by steel cords that hold the tire onto the rim.
Bias Ply Tire:A pneumatic tire in which the plies
are laid at alternate angles less than 90 degrees
to the centerline of the tread.Cold Tire Pressure:The amount of air pressure
in a tire, measured in pounds per square inch (psi)
or kilopascals (kPa) before a tire has built up
heat from driving. SeeIn ation - Tire Pressure
on page 386.
Curb Weight:This means the weight of a motor
vehicle with standard and optional equipment
including the maximum capacity of fuel, oil, and
coolant, but without passengers and cargo.
DOT Markings:A code molded into the sidewall
of a tire signifying that the tire is in compliance
with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT)
motor vehicle safety standards. The DOT code
includes the Tire Identi cation Number (TIN),
an alphanumeric designator which can also identify
the tire manufacturer, production plant, brand,
and date of production.
GVWR:Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.

If a tire goes at, you won’t need to stop on the side
of the road to change the tire. You can just keep on
driving. The shorter the distance you drive and the
slower the speed, the greater the chance that the
tire will not have to be replaced. If you drive on a
de ated EMT for 25 miles (40 km) or less and at
speeds of 55 mph (90 km/h) or less, there is a
good chance that the tire can be repaired. The
tire can operate effectively with no air pressure
for up to 100 miles (160 km) at speeds up to
55 mph (90 km/h), but the tire would then have to
be replaced. When a tire is lled with air, it provides
a cushion between the road and the wheel.
Because you won’t have this cushion when driving
on a de ated tire, try to avoid potholes that could
damage your wheel and require replacement of it.
Some road hazards can damage a tire beyond
repair. This damage could occur even before
you’ve driven on the tire in a de ated condition.
When a tire has been damaged, or if you’ve driven
any distance on a de ated EMT, check with an
authorized Goodyear EMT Service Center to
determine whether the tire can be repaired or
should be replaced. To maintain your vehicle’s
extended mobility feature, all replacement
tires must be Extended Mobility Tires.As soon as possible, contact the nearest
authorized GM or Goodyear EMT servicing facility
for inspection and repair or replacement. To locate
the nearest GM or Goodyear EMT servicing facility,
call Roadside Assistance. For phone numbers
and Roadside Assistance details seeRoadside
Assistance Program on page 458. You may also
contact Goodyear, for the nearest authorized EMT
servicing facility, by calling 1-800-789-9878.

Extended mobility tires are constructed
differently than other tires and could
explode during improper service. You or
others could be injured or killed if you
attempt to repair, replace, dismount, or
mount a extended mobility tire. Let only
an authorized EMT Service Center repair,
replace, dismount and mount extended
mobility tires.

The valve stems on your extended mobility
tires have sensors that are part of the Tire
Pressure Monitor (TPM). SeeTire Pressure
Monitor System on page 389. The TPM sensors
contain batteries which are designed to last
for 10 years under normal driving conditions.
See your dealer if you ever need to have a
wheel replaced, or if the sensors ever need
replacement.
Notice:Using liquid sealants can damage
the tire valves and tire pressure monitor
sensors in your extended mobility tires.
This damage would not be covered by
warranty. Don’t use liquid sealants in
your extended mobility tires.In ation - Tire Pressure
Tires need the correct amount of air pressure
to operate effectively.
Notice:Do not let anyone tell you that
under-in ation or over-in ation is all right.
It is not. If your tires do not have enough air
(under-in ation), you can get the following:
Too much exing
Too much heat
Tire overloading
Premature or irregular wear
Poor handling
Reduced fuel economy
If your tires have too much air (over-in ation),
you can get the following:
Unusual wear
Poor handling
Rough ride
Needless damage from road hazards
A Tire and Loading Information label is attached to
the vehicle’s b-pillar. This label lists your vehicle’s
original equipment tires and shows the correct
in ation pressures for your tires when they are cold.

Tire Pressure Monitor System
The Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS) uses
radio and sensor technology to check tire pressure
levels. TPMS sensors are mounted onto each
tire and wheel assembly. The TPMS sensors
monitor the air pressure in your vehicle’s tires
and transmit tire pressure readings to a receiver
located in the vehicle.
The TPMS is designed to alert the driver if a
low pressure condition exists. Using the Driver
Information Center (DIC), tire pressure levels can
be viewed by the driver. For additional information
and details about the DIC operation and displays
seeDIC Controls and Displays on page 208
andDIC Warnings and Messages on page 214.
When a low tire pressure condition is detected,
the TPMS will illuminate the low tire pressure
warning symbol located in the instrument panel
cluster. A DIC message to check the pressure in a
speci c tire will also appear on the DIC display.The low tire pressure warning symbol on the
instrument panel cluster and the LOW TIRE
PRESSURE message on the DIC display will
appear at each ignition cycle until the tires
are in ated to the correct in ation pressure.
You may notice, during cooler weather conditions,
that the low tire pressure warning light and the
DIC warning message will appear when the vehicle
is rst started and then turn off as you start to
drive the vehicle. This could be an early indicator
that the tire pressures are getting low and
need to be in ated to the proper pressure.
Each tire, including the spare (if provided), should
be checked monthly when cold and in ated to
the in ation pressure recommended by the
vehicle manufacturer on the vehicle placard or
tire in ation pressure label. (If your vehicle
has tires of a different size than the size indicated
on the vehicle placard or tire in ation pressure
label, you should determine the proper tire
in ation pressure for those tires.)

Wheel Alignment and Tire Balance
The tires and wheels on your vehicle were
aligned and balanced carefully at the factory to
give you the longest tire life and best overall
performance. Adjustments to wheel alignment
and tire balancing will not be necessary on
a regular basis. However, if you notice unusual
tire wear or your vehicle pulling to one side or
the other, the alignment may need to be checked.
If you notice your vehicle vibrating when driving
on a smooth road, your tires and wheels may
need to be rebalanced. See your dealer/retailer
for proper diagnosis.
Wheel Replacement
Replace any wheel that is bent, cracked, or
badly rusted or corroded. If wheel nuts keep
coming loose, the wheel, wheel bolts, and wheel
nuts should be replaced. If the wheel leaks
air, replace it (except some aluminum wheels,
which can sometimes be repaired). See your
dealer if any of these conditions exist.
Your dealer will know the kind of wheel you need.
Each new wheel should have the same
load-carrying capacity, diameter, width,
offset, and be mounted the same way as
the one it replaces.
If you need to replace any of your wheels,
wheel bolts or wheel nuts, replace them only
with new GM original equipment parts. This
way, you will be sure to have the right wheel,
wheel bolts, and wheel nuts for your vehicle.
