Refueling
ENGINE OIL
Although some oil consumption occurs during normal engine operation, mor\
e oil is consumed when the
engine is new as the internal parts generate higher friction while weari\
ng-in to each other. From the time
the engine is new until the first maintenance is performed, the oil cons\
umption could be higher than
normal. For this reason, it is especially important to check the oil eve\
ry time you refuel your vehicle
during this period. See
page 149.
Fuel requirements
Octane rating
Volvo engines are designed for optimum performance on unleaded premium g\
asoline with an AKI
octane rating of 91 or above. AKI (ANTI KNOCK INDEX) is an average of \
the Research Octane
Number, RON, and the Motor Octane Number, MON. ((RON + MON)/2). The \
minimum octane
requirement is AKI 87 (RON 91).
Deposit control gasoline (detergent additives)
Volvo recommends the use of detergent gasoline to control engine deposit\
s. Detergent gasoline is
effective in keeping injectors and intake valves clean. Consistent use o\
f deposit control gasolines will
help ensure good driveability and fuel economy. If you are not sure whet\
her the gasoline contains
deposit control additives, check with the service station operator.
NOTE: Volvo does not recommend the use of external fuel injector cleaning syst\
ems.
Unleaded fuel
Each Volvo has a three-way catalytic converter and must use only unleade\
d gasoline. U.S. and Canadian
regulations require that pumps delivering unleaded gasoline be labelled \
"UNLEADED". Only these
pumps have nozzles which fit your vehicle's filler inlet. It is unlawful\
to dispense leaded fuel into a
vehicle labelled "unleaded gasoline only". Leaded gasoline damages the t\
hree-way catalytic converter
and the heated oxygen sensor system. Repeated use of leaded gasoline wil\
l lessen the effectiveness of
the emission control system and could result in loss of emission warrant\
y coverage. State and local
vehicle inspection programs will make detection of misfueling easier, po\
ssibly resulting in emission test
failure for misfueled vehicles.
NOTE: Some U.S. and Canadian gasolines contain an octane enhancing additive ca\
lled methyl-
cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT). If such fuels are used, \
your Emission Control System
performance may be affected, and the Check Engine Light (malfunction in\
dicator lamp) located on your
instrument panel may light. If this occurs, please return your vehicle t\
o an authorized Volvo retailer for
maintenance.

l Remove snow tires when threat of snow or ice has ended.
l Note that roof racks, ski racks, etc, increase air resistance and also f\
uel consumption.
l At highway driving speeds, fuel consumption will be lower with the air c\
onditioning on and the
windows closed than with the air conditioning off and the windows open. \
l Using the onboard trip computer's fuel consumption modes can help you le\
arn how to drive more
economically.
Other factors that decrease gas mileage are:
l Dirty air cleaner
l Dirty engine oil and clogged oil filter
l Dragging brakes
l Incorrect front end alignment
Some of the above mentioned items and others are checked at the standard\
Maintenance intervals.
Weight distribution affects handling
At the specified curb weight your vehicle has a tendency to understeer, \
which means that the steering
wheel has to be turned more than might seem appropriate for the curvatur\
e of a bend. This ensures good
stability and reduces the risk of rear wheel skid. Remember that these p\
roperties can alter with the
vehicle load. The heavier the load in the cargo area, the less the tende\
ncy to understeer.
WARNING!
Driving with the tailgate open: Driving with the tailgate open could lead to poisonous exhaust gases
entering the passenger compartment. If the tailgate must be kept open fo\
r any reason, proceed as
follows
- Close the windows
- Set the ventilation system control to air flow to floor, windshield an\
d side windows and blower
control to its highest setting.
CAUTION
Drive slowly and carefully if going through standing water (i.e. floode\
d roadways, etc.). Damage to
the engine could result if excess water is drawn in through the air inta\
ke system. Never drive the
vehicle in water deeper than 18 inches (48 cm).

Periodic maintenance will help keep your vehicle running well. Your Warr\
anty and Service Records
Information booklet provides a comprehensive maintenance schedule up to \
150,000 miles (240,000 km)
of vehicle service. This maintenance program contains inspections and se\
rvices necessary for the proper
function of your car, and includes components that affect vehicle emissi\
ons. The maintenance services
contain several checks that require special instruments and tools and th\
erefore must be performed by a

The Federal Clean Air Act - U.S.
The Federal Clean Air Act requires vehicle manufacturers to furnish writ\
ten instructions to the ultimate
purchaser to assure the proper servicing and function of the components \
that control emissions. These
services, which are listed in the "Warranty and Service Records Informat\
ion booklet," are not covered
by the warranty. You will be required to pay for labor and material used\
.
Maintenance
Your Volvo passed several major inspections before it was delivered to y\
ou, in accordance with Volvo
specifications. The maintenance outlined in the Warranty and Service Rec\
ords Information booklet,
many of which will positively affect your vehicle's emissions, should be\
performed as indicated. It is
recommended that receipts for vehicle emission maintenance be retained i\
n case questions arise
concerning maintenance.
Inspection and maintenance should also be performed anytime a malfunctio\
n is observed or suspected.

ash event. Stored information
may be read and used by:
l Volvo Car Corporation
l service and repair facilities
l law enforcement or government agencies
l others who may assert a legal right to know, or who obtain your consent \
to know such information.

Owner maintenance
Periodic maintenance requirements and intervals are described in your ve\
hicle's Warranty and Service
Records Information booklet.
The following points can be carried out between the normally scheduled m\
aintenance services.
Each time the car is refueled:
l Check the engine oil level
l Clean the windshield, windshield wipers, headlights, and tail lights
Monthly:
l Check cold tire pressure in all tires. Inspect the tires for wear.
l Check that engine coolant and other fluid levels are between the indicat\
ed "min" and "max" markings.
l Clean interior glass surfaces with a glass cleaner and soft paper towels\
.
l Wipe driver information displays with a soft cloth.
l Visually inspect battery terminals for corrosion. Corrosion may indicate\
a loose terminal connector, or
a battery near the end of its useful service life. Consult your Volvo re\
tailer for additional information.
As needed:
l Wash the car, including the undercarriage, to reduce wear that can be ca\
used by a buildup of dirt, and
corrosion that can be caused by salt residues.
l Clean leaves and twigs from air intake vents at the base of the windshie\
ld, and from other places
where they may collect.

Emission inspection readiness
What is an Onboard Diagnostic System (OBD II)?
OBD II is part of your vehicle's computerized engine management system. \
It stores diagnostic
information about your vehicle's emission controls. It can light the Che\
ck Engine light (MIL) if it detects
an emission control "fault." A "fault" is a component or system that is \
not performing within an expected
range. A fault may be permanent or temporary. OBD II will store a messag\
e about any fault.
How do states use OBD II for emission inspections?

Many states connect a computer directly to a vehicle's OBD II system. Th\
e inspector can then read
"faults." In some states, this type of inspection has replaced the tailp\
ipe emission test.
How can my vehicle fail OBD II emission inspection?
Your vehicle can fail OBD II emission inspection for any of the followin\
g reasons.
l If your Check Engine (MIL) light is lit, your vehicle may fail inspect\
ion.
l If your vehicle's Check Engine light was lit, but went out without any a\
ction on your part, OBD II will
still have a recorded fault. Your vehicle may pass or fail, depending on\
the inspection practices in your
area.
l If you had recent service that required disconnecting the battery, OBD I\
I diagnostic information may
be incomplete and "not ready" for inspection. A vehicle that is not read\
y may fail inspection.
How can I prepare for my next OBD II emission inspection?
l If your Check Engine (MIL) light is lit - or was lit but went out with\
out service, have your vehicle
diagnosed and, if necessary, serviced by a qualified Volvo technician.
l If you recently had service for a lit Check Engine light, or if you had \
service that required
disconnecting the battery, a period of driving is necessary to bring the\
OBD II system to "ready" for
inspection. A half-hour trip of mixed stop-and-go/ highway driving is ty\
pically needed to allow OBD II
to reach readiness. Your Volvo retailer can provide you with more inform\
ation on planning a trip.
l Maintain your vehicle in accordance with your vehicle's maintenance sche\
dule.

Reinforced lifting points
Hoisting the vehicle
If a garage jack is used to lift the vehicle, the two jack attachments p\
oints should be used. They are
specially reinforced to bear the weight of the vehicle (see the illustr\
ation above). A garage jack can also
be placed under the front of the engine support frame. Take care not to \
damage the splash guard under

the engine. Ensure that the jack is positioned so that the vehicle canno\
t slide off it. Always use axle
stands or similar structures. The car's gross vehicle weight is between \
5770 lb (2630 kg) and 6080 lb
(2760 kg). Use a jack and stands rated for this weight.
If a two-post hoist is used to lift the vehicle, the front and rear lift\
arm pads should be centered under the
reinforced lift plates on the inboard edge of the sill rail (see illust\
ration).
Please note the following before you begin working on your vehicle:
Battery (see also
page 155 for more information on handling the battery)
l Ensure that the battery cables are correctly connected and tightened.
l Never disconnect the battery when the engine is running (e.g. when repl\
acing the battery).
l The battery contains acid that is both corrosive and poisonous. It is im\
portant that the battery is
handled in an environmentally friendly way. Let your Volvo retailer assi\
st you.
l Never use a fast charger to charge the battery. The battery cables shoul\
d be disconnected when
recharging.
WARNING!
The ignition system has very high voltage! The voltage in the ignition s\
ystem is dangerous!
Do not touch spark plugs, ignition cables or the ignition coil when the \
engine is running or the
ignition is switched on!
The ignition should be switched off when:
- Conducting engine tests.
- Replacing parts in the ignition system, such as spark plugs, ignition \
coil, distributor, ignition cables,
etc.
- Never try to repair any part of the SRS/SIPS/WHIPS/IC systems yourself\
. Any interference in the
system could cause malfunction and serious injury. Any work should only \
be performed by an
authorized Volvo workshop.

Belt check
Check the belt regularly to make sure it is in good condition and is cle\
an. A worn or dirty belt can cause
poor cooling and low alternator output as well as impair the operation o\
f the power steering and the air
conditioning unit.
NOTE: The drive belt is equipped with a self-tensioning mechanism and requires\
no adjustment
between changes.

WARNING!
The engine must not be running when this check is
performed.
Check coolant level
The cooling system must be filled with coolant and not leak to operate a\
t maximum efficiency. Check
the coolant level regularly. The level should be between the "MAX" and "\
MIN" marks on the expansion
tank. The check should be made with particular thoroughness when the eng\
ine is new or when the
cooling system has been drained.
Do not remove the filler cap other than for topping up with coolant. Fre\
quent removal may prevent
coolant circulation between the engine and the expansion tank during eng\
ine warm up and cooling.
Changing coolant
Normally, the coolant does not need to be changed. If the system must be\
drained, consult your Volvo
retailer.
NOTE: Do not top off with water only. This reduces the rust-protective and ant\
ifreeze qualities of the
coolant and has a lower boiling point. It can also cause damage to the c\
ooling system if it should freeze.
Top off with Volvo Genuine Coolant/Antifreeze only (a 50/50 mix of wate\
r and antifreeze). CAUTION
The cooling system must always be kept filled to the correct level. If i\
t is not kept filled, there can be
high local temperatures in the engine which could result in damage. Diff\
erent types of antifreeze/
coolant may not be mixed.
WARNING!
Never remove the radiator cap while the engine is warm. Wait until the v\
ehicle
cools.
