5. Take the holding strap out of itshole which is on the rear of the sec-
ond seat (For the location of the
strap, see “—Tumbling second seats
for luggage space (bench type)” on
page 53 or “—Tumbling second seats
for luggage space (separate type)”
on page 56 in this Section.), and
hook the strap into the hollow on
the underside of the seat cushion.
Next, pull the strap on the free end
to secure the seat.
When returning the third seats to its origi-
nal position, put the holding strap into the
hole.
CAUTION
When tumbling the third seats, fix
the seats securely by adjusting the
length of the holding strap. Failure
to do so may cause an unexpected
accident or severe injury in the
event of emergency braking or a
collision.
When returning seats to their origi-
nal position, observe the following
precautions in order to prevent per-
sonal injury in a collision or sud-
den stop:
Be careful not to get your hands or
feet pinched in the seat.
Make sure the seat is securely
locked by pushing forward and rear-
ward on the top of the seatback or
by trying to pull up the edge of the
bottom cushion. Failure to do so
will prevent the seat belt from oper-
ating properly.
Make sure the seat belts are not
twisted or caught under the seat
and are arranged in their proper
position and are ready to use.
BEFORE REMOVING THIRD SEATS 1. Stow the third seat belt buckles as shown in the illustration.
NOTICE
To prevent damage to the seat belt
buckles, they must be stowed before
you tumble the seatback.

2. Pass the third seat belts through thehangers.
This prevents the shoulder belt from being
damaged.
CAUTION
The seat belt must be removed from
the hanger when the seat belts is in
use.
3. To stow the center seat belt, pull it slightly out of its cover. It will auto-
matically roll back partway. Roll the
seat belt backwards as shown above
and insert it into the slot of its cov-
er. Make sure the tabs are securely
locked in the cover.
NOTICE
The seat belt must be stowed before
you fold the seatback.

3. Move the seat to the rearmost posi-tion. Unlock the seatback and fold it
down.
CAUTION
Make sure people or luggage are
clear from the seat. Then, hold the
seat and slowly move it. Otherwise,
people may be injured or luggage
may be damaged, if the seat hits
them.
4. Pull the center handle (2) up whileholding up the left side lever (1) un-
der the seat, lift the seat and remove
it toward you.
Removing the third seats will enlarge the
luggage compartment. See “—Stowage
precautions” on page 358 in Section 2 for
precautions when loading luggage.

Third seats
The seat belt buckles of the second
and third seats can be stowed when
not in use.
Seat belt buckles must be stowed before
you fold the seat back. (See “—Tumbling
second seats for luggage space (bench
type)” on page 53, “—Tumbling second

on page 56, “—Tumbling third seats for
luggage space” on page 59 and “—Re-
moving third seats” on page 63 in this
Section.)
STOWING THE CENTER SEAT BELT OF
THE THIRD SEATS
To stow the center seat belt of the third
seats, pull the seat belt out of its cov-
er. It will automatically roll back part-
way. Roll the seat belt backward and
insert it into the slot of its cover as
shown above. Make sure the tabs are
securely locked in the cover.
Seat belt must be stowed before you fold
the seatback. (See “—Tumbling third seats
for luggage space” on page 59 or “—Re-
moving third seats” on page 63 in this
Section.)

PULLING OUT THE CENTER SEAT BELT
OF THE THIRD SEATS
To use the center seat belt of the third
seats, pull the belt out a little and then
pull the tabs out from the cover.The center shoulder belt comfort guide
for the third seat center position will
provide added seat belt comfort for
children who have outgrown child re-
straints and for small adults. When the
center shoulder belt is inserted through
the guide, the comfort guide pulls the
belt away from the neck and head of an
occupant.
To use the comfort guide, do as fol-
lows.

To change the steering wheel angle,
hold the steering wheel, pull the lock
release lever toward you, tilt the steer-
ing wheel to the desired angle and re-
lease the lever.
When the steering wheel is in a low posi-
tion, it will spring up as you release the
lock release lever.
CAUTION
Do not adjust the steering wheel
while the vehicle is moving. Doing
so may cause the driver to mishan-
dle the vehicle and an accident may
occur resulting in death or serious
injuries.
After adjusting the steering wheel,
try moving it up and down to make
sure it is locked in position.
Adjust the mirror so that you can see
the side of your vehicle in the mirror.
Be careful when judging the size or dis-
tance of any object seen in the outside
rear view mirror on the passenger ’s side
because it is a convex mirror. Any object
seen in a convex mirror will look smaller
and farther away than when seen in a flat
mirror.
On some models, when you push the
back window defogger switch, the heater
panels in the outside rear view mirrors will
quickly clear the surface. To turn on the
back window defogger, see “Back window
and outside rear view mirror defoggers” on
page 154 in Section 1−5.

When all the doors are unlocked using
either the key or the wireless remote con-
trol transmitter simultaneously, the ignition
switch light will come on and remain on
for about 15 seconds before fading out.
To prevent the battery being discharged,
the light will automatically turn off when
the key is removed and the door is left
opened for 20 minutes or more.
The following adjustments can be made in
this system. For details, contact your
Toyota dealer.

To turn on the windshield wipers, move
the lever to the desired setting.

The “INT” band lets you adjust the wiping
time interval when the wiper lever is in
the intermittent position (position 1). Twist
the band upward to increase the time be-
tween sweeps, and downward to decrease
it. To squirt washer fluid, pull the lever
toward you.
If the windshield wipers are off, they will
operate a couple of times after the washer
squirts.
For instructions on adding washer fluid,
see “Adding washer fluid” on page 446 in
Section 7
−3.
In freezing weather, warm the windshield
with the defroster before using the washer.
This will help prevent the washer fluid
from freezing on your windshield, which
can block your vision.
NOTICE
Do not operate the wipers if the wind-
shield is dry. It may scratch the
glass.

NOTICE
Do not remove the thermostat in
the engine cooling system as this
may cause the engine to overheat.
The thermostat is designed to con-
trol the flow of coolant to keep the
temperature of the engine within
the specified operating range.
 Do not continue driving with an
overheated engine. See “If your ve-
hicle overheats” on page 388 in
Section 4.

Idling
The oil pressure gauge indicates engine
oil pressure when the ignition switch is
on. Check it while driving to make sure
that the needle is in the proper range.
If the oil pressure should stay below the
normal range, pull off the road to a safe
place and stop the engine immediately.
Call a Toyota dealer or qualified repair
shop for assistance.
Oil pressure may not build up when the
oil level is too low. The oil pressure
gauge is not designed to indicate oil level,
and the oil level must be checked using
the level dipstick.
NOTICE
Do not drive the vehicle with the oil
pressure below the normal range until
the cause is fixed—it may ruin the
engine.
