Manual transmission vehicles
The key can be turned from “ACC” to “LOCK” only
when the key is pushed in while turning it. „ ACC
In this position the electrical accessories (radio, ciga-
rette lighter socket, etc.) can be used. „ ON
This is the normal operatin g position after the engine
is started. „
START
Do not turn the ignition switch to the “START”
position while the engine is running.
The engine is started in this position. The starter
cranks the engine to start it. When the key is released
(after the engine has star ted), the key automatically
returns to the “ON” position. „ Key reminder chime
„Chime
„ Key
„ Key
„ Reminder chimeThe reminder chime sounds when the driver’s door
opens and the key is in the “LOCK” or “ACC” positions.
The chime stops when the ke y is removed from the ig-
nition switch. „ Ignition switch light (if equipped)
For easy access to the ignition switch in the dark, the
ignition switch light comes on when driver’s door is
opened. The light remains on for 10 seconds and goes
out after driver’s door is cl osed or if the key is turned
to the “ON” position.

The fuel gauge shows the approximate amount of fuel
remaining in the tank.
The gauge does not return to “E” even though the ig-
nition switch is in the “ACC” or “LOCK” position.
The gauge may move slightly during braking, turning
or acceleration due to fuel level movement in the tank.
NOTE
You will see the “FUEL DOOR ” sign in the ta-
chometer.
This indicates that the fuel filler door (lid) is locat-
ed on the right side of the vehicle. T
Low fuel warning light
The low fuel warning light comes on when the tank is
nearly empty [approximately 2.6 US gal (10.0 liters,
2.2 Imp gal)]. It only operates when the ignition switch
is in the “ON” position.
NOTE
This light does not go out unless the tank is re-
plenished up to an internal fuel quantity of approx-
imately 3.7 US gal (14 liters, 3.1 Imp gal).
(Turbo models only)
Promptly put fuel in the tank whenever the low
fuel warning light comes on. Engine misfires as
a result of an empty tank could cause damage
to the engine.

range, safely stop the vehicle as soon as possi-
ble.

yDriving with the brake system warning light
on is dangerous. This indicates your brake sys-
tem may not be working properly. If the light re-
mains on, have the brakes inspected by a
SUBARU dealer immediately. y If at all in doubt about whether the brakes are
operating properly, do not drive the vehicle.
Have your vehicle towed to the nearest
SUBARU dealer for repair.
This light has the following two functions: T Parking brake warning
The light comes on with the parking brake applied
while the ignition switch is in the “ON” position. It goes
out when the parking brake is fully released. T Brake fluid level warning
This light comes on when the brake fluid level has
dropped to near the “MIN” level of the brake fluid res-
ervoir with the ignition switch in the “ON” position and with the parking brake fully released. If the brake system warning li
ght should come on while
driving (with the parking brake fully released and with
the ignition switch positioned in “ON”), it could be an
indication of leaking of brake fluid or worn brake pads.
If this occurs, immediately stop the vehicle at the near-
est safe place and check the brake fluid level. If the flu-
id level is below the “MIN” mark in the reservoir, do not
drive the vehicle. Have the vehicle towed to the near-
est SUBARU dealer for repair. „ Door ajar warning lights
„Door ajar warning lights
„ Warning lights
„ Door ajarThe specific door ajar warning light comes on if any
door is not fully closed.
Always make sure this light is out before you start to drive. „Switchback door indicator light
„Switchback door indicator lightWhile the ignition switch is in the “ON” position, the
switchback door indicator light comes on when the
switchback door is open.
While the ignition switch is in the “LOCK” or “ACC” po-
sition, the switchback door indicator light flashes for
approximately 20 seconds and goes off when the
switchback door is open.

1) Front section
2) Rear section
The hard bed cover can be used to cover the entire
cargo area. Its front sect ion and rear section can be
opened separately. Also, the bed cover can be re-
moved and reinstalled as desired.
The bed cover is water-resistant, but not waterproof.
Water may enter the cargo bed during heavy rain or if
an automatic car wash is used. „ Locking and unlocking the bed cover
There is a special key for use with the hard bed cover.
The key number is stamped on the metal plate at- tached to the key. Writ
e down the key number and
keep it in another safe place, not in the vehicle. This
number is needed to make a replacement key if you lose your key.
1) Hard bed cover key
2) Key number plate
Unlock the front and rear sections of the bed
cover using the special key only. Never use the
ignition key or door key to do this, as these
keys will damage the bed cover’s key cylinders.

1. To open the fuel filler door, pull it outward. 1) Open
2) Close
2. Remove the fuel filler cap by turning it slowly coun-
terclockwise.
3. Stop filling the tank after the fuel filler pump auto-
matically clicks off. Do not add any more fuel.
4. Put the cap back on, turn it clockwise until you hear
a clicking sound. Be certain not to catch the tether un-
der the cap while tightening.
5. Close the fuel filler door completely.
If you spill any fuel on the painted surface, rinse it off
immediately. Otherwise, t he painted surface could be
damaged.

Driving tips
starting.
Keep the door locks from freezing by squirting them
with deicer or glycerin.
Forcing a frozen door open
may damage or separate
the rubber weather strips around the door. If the door
is frozen, use hot water to melt the ice, and afterwards
thoroughly wipe the water away.
Use a windshield washer fluid that contains an anti-
freeze solution. Do not us e engine antifreeze or other
substitutes because they may damage the paint of the
vehicle.
SUBARU Windshield Washer Fluid contains 58.5%
methyl alcohol and 41.5% surfactant, by volume. Its
freezing temperature varies according to how much it
is diluted, as indicated in the following table.
In order to prevent freezing of washer fluid, check the
freezing temperatures in the table above when adjust-
ing the fluid concentration to the outside temperature.
If you fill the reservoir tank with a fluid with a different concentration from the one us
ed previously, purge the
old fluid from the piping between the reservoir tank
and washer nozzles by operating the washer for a cer-
tain period of time. Otherwise, if the concentration of
the fluid remaining in the piping is too low for the out-
side temperature, it may freeze and block the nozzles.
Adjust the washer fluid concentration appropri-
ately for the outside temperature. If the concen-
tration is inappropriate, sprayed washer fluid
may freeze on the windshield and obstruct your
view, and the fluid may freeze in the reservoir
tank.
T Before driving your vehicle
Before entering the vehicle, remove any snow or ice
from your shoes because that could make the pedals
slippery and dangerous.
While warming up the vehicle before driving, check
that the accelerator pedal, brake pedal, and all other
controls operate smoothly.
Clear away ice and snow that has accumulated under
the fenders to avoid making steering difficult. During
