BRAKES AND CLUTCHChecking Brake/Clutch Fluid
Level
Check the fluid level in the reservoir
periodically. The fluid level should be
between MAX and MIN indicators on
the side of the reservoir. Before removing the reservoir cap
and adding brake fluid, clean the
area around the reservoir cap thor-
oughly to prevent brake/clutch fluid
contamination.
If the level is low, add fluid to the MAX
level. The level will fall with accumu-
lated mileage. This is a normal condi-
tion associated with the wear of the
brake/clutch linings. If the fluid level
becomes low frequently, have the
brake/clutch system checked by an
authorized Kia dealer.
Use only the specified brake/clutch
fluid. (Refer to “Recommended
Lubricants’’ later in this section.)
Never mix different types of fluid.MAINTENANCE7-14

NOTICEIn the event the brake/clutch sys-
tem requires frequent additions of
fluid, the vehicle should be inspect-
ed by an authorized Kia dealer.
WARNING
When changing and adding
brake/clutch fluid, handle it
carefully. Do not let it come in
contact with your eyes. If
brake/clutch fluid should come
in contact with your eyes,
immediately flush them with a
large quantity of fresh tap
water. Have your eyes examined
by a doctor as soon as possi-
ble.

POWER STEERINGChecking the Power Steering
Fluid Level
With the vehicle on level ground,
check the fluid level in the power
steering reservoir periodically. The
fluid level should be between HIGH
and LOW indicators on the side of the
reservoir.
Before adding power steering fluid,
thoroughly clean the area around the
reservoir cap to prevent power steer-
ing fluid contamination. If the level is low, add fluid to the
HIGH level.
In the event the power steering sys-
tem requires frequent addition of
fluid, the vehicle should be inspected
by an authorized Kia dealer.
Use only the specified power steering
fluid. (Refer to “Recommended
Lubricants’’ in this section.)MAINTENANCE7-16

NOTICETo avoid damage to the power
steering pump, do not operate the
vehicle for prolonged periods with a
low power steering fluid level.

1. Park the vehicle on level ground
and firmly set the parking brake.
2. Allow the engine to idle for about 2
minutes.
3. Depress the brake pedal and move
the shift lever slowly through all
ranges then set it in P (Park).
4. With the engine still idling, pull out
the dipstick, wipe it clean and rein-
sert it fully.
5. Pull out the dipstick again and
check the fluid level.5. Pull out the dipstick again and
check the fluid level.
If the fluid has been warmed to nor-
mal operating temperature of approx-
imately 167°F (75°C), the fluid level
should be between the 2 notches
marked 75°C.MAINTENANCE7-18

NOTICENew automatic transaxle fluid
should be red. The red dye is added
so the assembly plant can identify it
as automatic transaxle fluid and
distinguishes it from engine oil or
antifreeze. The red dye, which is not
an indicator of fluid quality, is not
permanent. As the vehicle is driven,
the automatic transaxle fluid will
begin to look darker. The color may
eventually appear light brown.
Therefore, have an Authorized Kia
dealer change the automatic
transaxle fluid according to the
Scheduled Maintenance at the
beginning of this section.

Disc brake pads and rear brake
shoes should be inspected for wear
whenever tires are rotated.Tire Replacement
If the tire is worn evenly, a tread wear
indicator will appear as a solid band
12.7mm wide (1/2 inch) across the
the tread. This shows there is less
than 1.6 mm (1/16 inch) of tread left
on the tire. Replace the tire when this
happens.
Do not wait for the band to appear
across the entire tread before replac-
ing the tire.Wheel Alignment and Tire Balance
The wheels on your vehicle were
aligned and balanced carefully at the
factory to give you the longest tire life
and best overall performance.
In most cases, you will not need to
have your wheels aligned again.
However, if you notice unusual tire
wear or your vehicle pulling one way
or the other, the alignment may need
to be reset.
If you notice your vehicle vibrating
when driving on a smooth road, your
wheels may need to be rebalanced.MAINTENANCE7-28

NOTICEImproper wheel weights can dam-
age your vehicle’s aluminum
wheels. Use only approved wheel
weights.
