4. Crank the engine, and then make sure that engine oil comes out from intake valve timing control cover oil hole. End crank after
checking.
WARNING:
Be careful not to touch rotating parts (drive belt, idler pul-
ley, and crankshaft pulley, etc.).
CAUTION:
Engine oil may squirt from intake valve timing control sole-
noid valve installation hole during cranking. Use a shop
cloth to prevent the engine components and the vehicle. Do
not allow engine oil to get on rubber components such as
drive belt or engine mount insulators. Immediately wipe off
any splashed engine oil.

Clean oil groove between oil strainer and intake valve timing control solenoid valve if engine oil does not
come out from intake valve timing control cover oil hole. Refer to LU-23, "
LUBRICATION SYSTEM" .
5. Remove components between intake valve timing control solenoid valve and camshaft sprocket (INT), and then check each oil groove for clogging.

Clean oil groove if necessary. Refer to LU-23, "LUBRICATION SYSTEM" .
6. After inspection, install removed parts.
Valve ClearanceNBS003IF
INSPECTION
In cases of removing/installing or replacing camshaft and valve-related parts, or of unusual engine conditions
due to changes in valve clearance (found malfunctions during starting, idling or causing noise), perform
inspection as follows:
1. Remove rocker covers (right and left bank). Refer to EM-200, "
ROCKER COVER" .
2. Measure the valve clearance as follows:
a. Set No. 1 cylinder at TDC of its compression stroke.

Rotate crankshaft pulley in clockwise to align TDC identifica-
tion notch (without paint mark) with timing indicator on front
cover.

Make sure that both intake and exhaust cam noses of No. 1
cylinder (engine front side of left bank) are located as shown
in the figure.

If not, turn crankshaft one revolution (360 degrees) and align
as shown in the figure.

Removal and Installation of Front Oil SealNBS003IH
REMOVAL
1. Remove the following parts:

Front engine undercover

Radiator; Refer to CO-41, "RADIATOR"

Drive belt; Refer to EM-174, "DRIVE BELTS" .

Cooling fan; Refer to CO-49, "COOLING FAN" .

Rear plate cover; Refer to EM-187, "OIL PAN AND OIL STRAINER" .
2. Remove crankshaft pulley as follows:
a. Set ring gear stopper (SST).
b. Loosen crankshaft pulley bolt, and then pull crankshaft pulley with both hands to remove it.
CAUTION:

Do not remove crankshaft pulley bolt. Keep loosened
crankshaft pulley bolt in place to protect removed crank-
shaft pulley from dropping.

Do not remove balance weight (inner hexagon bolt) at the
front of crankshaft pulley.
3. Remove front oil seal using suitable tool. CAUTION:
Be careful not to damage front cover and oil pump drive
spacer.
INSTALLATION
1. Apply new engine oil to both oil seal lip and dust seal lip of new front oil seal.
2. Install front oil seal.

Preparation
1. Release fuel pressure. Refer to EC-746, "FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE" .
2. Drain engine coolant from radiator. Refer to CO-38, "
Changing Engine Coolant" .
CAUTION:

Perform this step when engine is cold.

Do not spill engine coolant on drive belts.
3. Disconnect both battery terminal. Refer to SC-4, "
BATTERY" .
4. Remove crankshaft position sensor (POS) from transmission. CAUTION:

Handle carefully to avoid dropping and shocks.

Do not disassemble.

Do not allow metal powder to adhere to magnetic part at sensor tip.

Do not place sensors in a location where they are exposed to magnetism.
5. Remove the following parts:

Hood assembly; Refer to BL-13, "HOOD" .

Engine cover; Refer to EM-173, "ENGINE ROOM COVER" .

Front and rear engine undercover

Air duct (inlet), air duct and air cleaner case assembly; Refer to EM-177, "AIR CLEANER AND AIR
DUCT" .

Drive belts; Refer to EM-174, "DRIVE BELTS" .

Radiator and radiator hoses (upper and lower); Refer to CO-41, "RADIATOR" .

Front road wheels and tires
Engine Room LH
1. Disconnect engine room harness from the engine side and set it aside for easier work.
2. Disconnect heater hoses, and install plugs to avoid leakage of engine coolant.
3. Disconnect ground cable from exhaust manifold cover to vehicle.
4. Disconnect vacuum hose between vehicle and engine and set it aside.
5. Discharge refrigerant from A/C circuit. Refer to ATC-137, "
REFRIGERANT LINES" .
6. Remove A/C piping from A/C compressor, and temporarily fasten it on vehicle with a rope. Refer to AT C -
139, "Components" .
Engine Room RH
1. Disconnect fuel feed hose and EVAP hose. Refer to EM-194, "FUEL INJECTOR AND FUEL TUBE" .
CAUTION:
Fit plugs onto disconnected hose to prevent fuel leak.
2. Disconnect engine room harness from the engine side and set it aside for easier work.
3. Disconnect ground cable from exhaust manifold cover to vehicle.
4. Disconnect vacuum hose between vehicle and engine and set it aside.
5. Disconnect reservoir tank of power steering oil pump from engine, and move it aside for easier work. CAUTION:
When temporarily securing, keep reservoir tank upright to avoid a fluid leak.
Vehicle Underbody
1. Remove front cross bar. Refer to FSU-6, "FRONT SUSPENSION ASSEMBLY" .
2. Disconnect power steering oil pump from engine. Move it from its location and secure with a rope for eas- ier work. Refer to PS-31, "
Removal and Installation (VK45DE Models)" .
3. Remove A/T fluid cooler tube. Refer to AT- 2 6 6 , "
TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY" .
4. Remove exhaust front tube and center muffler with power tool. Refer to EX-3, "
EXHAUST SYSTEM" .
5. Remove RH and LH transverse link mounting bolts and nuts. Refer to FSU-14, "
TRANSVERSE LINK" .
6. Disconnect stabilizer connecting rod lower. Refer to FSU-6, "
FRONT SUSPENSION ASSEMBLY" .
7. Remove A/T control rod at control device assembly side. Then temporarily secure it on transmission, so that it does not sag. Refer to AT- 2 2 9 , "
SHIFT CONTROL SYSTEM" .

Observe the following precautions to ensure safe and proper servicing. These precautions are not
described in each individual section.
Precautions for Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) “AIR BAG” and “SEAT
BELT PRE-TENSIONER”
NAS0005W
The Supplemental Restraint System such as “AIR BAG” and “SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER”, used along
with a front seat belt, helps to reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and front passenger for certain
types of collision. This system includes seat belt switch inputs and dual stage front air bag modules. The SRS
system uses the seat belt switches to determine the front air bag deployment, and may only deploy one front
air bag, depending on the severity of a collision and whether the front occupants are belted or unbelted.
Information necessary to service the system safely is included in the SRS and SB section of this Service Man-
ual.
WARNING:

To avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death
in the event of a collision which would result in air bag inflation, all maintenance must be per-
formed by an authorized NISSAN/INFINITI dealer.

Improper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS, can lead to per-
sonal injury caused by unintentional activation of the system. For removal of Spiral Cable and Air
Bag Module, see the SRS section.

Do not use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed to in this
Service Manual. SRS wiring harnesses can be identified by yellow and/or orange harnesses or
harness connectors.
Precautions Necessary for Steering Wheel Rotation After Battery DisconnectNAS0005Y
NOTE:

This Procedure is applied only to models with Intelligent Key system and NVIS/IVIS (NISSAN/INFINITI
VEHICLE IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM - NATS).

Remove and install all control units after disconnecting both battery cables with the ignition knob in the
″ LOCK ″ position.

Always use CONSULT-II to perform self-diagnosis as a part of each function inspection after finishing
work. If DTC is detected, perform trouble diagnosis according to self-diagnostic results.
For models equipped with the Intelligent Key system and NVIS/IVIS, an electrically controlled steering lock
mechanism is adopted on the key cylinder.
For this reason, if the battery is disconnected or if the battery is discharged, the steering wheel will lock and
steering wheel rotation will become impossible.
If steering wheel rotation is required when battery power is interrupted, follow the procedure below before
starting the repair operation.
OPERATION PROCEDURE
1. Connect both battery cables.
NOTE:
Supply power using jumper cables if battery is discharged.
2. Use the Intelligent Key or mechanical key to turn the ignition switch to the ″ACC ″ position. At this time, the
steering lock will be released.
3. Disconnect both battery cables. The steering lock will remain released and the steering wheel can be rotated.
4. Perform the necessary repair operation.
5. When the repair work is completed, return the ignition switch to the ″LOCK ″ position before connecting
the battery cables. (At this time, the steering lock mechanism will engage.)
6. Perform a self-diagnosis check of all control units using CONSULT-II.

HOSE CLAMPING

If old rubber hose is re-used, install hose clamp in its original
position (at the indentation where the old clamp was). If there is
a trace of tube bulging left on the old rubber hose, align rubber
hose at that position.

Discard old clamps; replace with new ones.

After installing plate clamps, apply force to them in the direction
of the arrow, tightening rubber hose equally all around.
Precautions for Engine OilsNAS00066
Prolonged and repeated contact with used engine oil may cause skin cancer. Try to avoid direct skin contact
with used oil.
If skin contact is made, wash thoroughly with soap or hand cleaner as soon as possible.
HEALTH PROTECTION PRECAUTIONS

Avoid prolonged and repeated contact with oils, particularly used engine oils.

Wear protective clothing, including impervious gloves where practicable.

Do not put oily rags in pockets.

Avoid contaminating clothes, particularly underpants, with oil.

Heavily soiled clothing and oil-impregnated footwear should not be worn. Overalls must be cleaned regu-
larly.

First aid treatment should be obtained immediately for open cuts and wounds.

Use barrier creams, applying them before each work period, to help the removal of oil from the skin.

Wash with soap and water to ensure all oil is removed (skin cleansers and nail brushes will help). Prepa-
rations containing lanolin replace the natural skin oils which have been removed.

Do not use gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel, gas oil, thinners or solvents for cleaning skin.

If skin disorders develop, obtain medical advice without delay.

Where practical, degrease components prior to handling.

Where there is a risk of eye contact, eye protection should be worn, for example, chemical goggles or face
shields; in addition an eye wash facility should be provided.
Precautions for the EnvironmentNAS0008A
In servicing the vehicle, it may be necessary to use, dispose of or recycle hazardous, flammable, or poisonous
materials, such as gasoline, refrigerant gas, solvents, oil, oil filter, air bag modules, seat belt pretensioners,
etc. Disposal, recycling, and transportation of any hazardous materials should be performed in compliance
with applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations.
