B270A01A-EAT BRAKE PAD WEAR WARNING SOUND The front disc brake pads have wear indicators that should make a high-pitched squealing or scraping noise when new pads are needed. The sound may come and go or be heard all thetime when the vehicle is moving. It may also be heard when the brake pedal is pushed down firmly. Exces-sive rotor damage will result if the worn pads are not replaced. See your Hyundai authorised repairer immediately. B290A02A-EAT COOLANT TEMPERATURE GAUGE
The needle on the gauge indicates the approximate fuel level in the fuel tank. The fuel capacity is given in Section 9. WARNING:
Never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. The coolant is under pressure and could erupt and cause severe burns. Wait until theengine is cool before removing the radiator cap.

EFFECTIVE BRAKING
HPC141A1-E Braking system performance and fric- tion material life are greatly affected by the driving style adopted. The follow- ing suggestions are made to assist inachieving the best results from the braking system.
o Anticipate the road and conditions ahead in order that heavy braking may be avoided.
o When descending long gradients,
use the engine to assist in retardingthe vehicle to minimise the possibil- ity of brake fade occurring.
o When trailer towing, ensure that the trailer brakes function correctly anduse engine braking to assist the vehicle braking system.
o Use only genuine Hyundai replace- ment brake pads and shoes to en-sure consistent friction characteris-tics and wear rates.
o After driving through deep water (e.g.
fording), the brakes may becomewet and performance reduced. Al- ways check brake efficiency after emerging from the water and dry thebrakes by lightly depressing the brake pedal several times whilst driv- ing slowly.LIMITED-SLIP DIFFEREN- TIAL (LSD)
D190A01HP-EAT (Not all models) A limited-slip differential, if equipped, is for the rear wheel differential only.The features of this limited-slip differ- ential are described below: Just as with a conventional differential,the wheel on one side is allowed to turn at a different speed from the wheel on the other side when the vehicle iscornering. The difference between the limited-slip differential and a conven- tional differential is that if the wheel onone side of the vehicle loses traction, a greater amount of torque is applied to the rear wheel on the other side toimprove traction.
WARNING:
ABS will not prevent accidents dueto improper or dangerous drivingmanoeuvres. Even though vehicle control is improved during emer- gency braking, always maintain asafe distance between you and ob- jects ahead. Vehicle speeds should always be reduced during extremeroad conditions. The braking distance for cars equipped with an anti-lock braking system may be longer than for those without it, in the following road con-ditions. These roads should be driven at reduced speeds.
o Rough, gravel or snow-covered roads.
o With tyre chains installed.
o On roads where the road surface is pitted or has different surfaceheight.
The safety features of an ABSequipped vehicle should not be testedby high speed driving or cornering. This could endanger the safety of yourself or others.
! CAUTION:
o Never start the engine with the gearshift lever placed in the for- ward or reverse whilst one of therear wheels is jacked up and the other in contact with the ground; doing so may cause the vehicle tojump forward.
o Use only recommended oil for
LSD in the rear axle.See page 9-4 for the recommended oil descriptions.

o Automatic transmission fluid
The fluid level should be in the "HOT"
range of the dipstick, after engine andtransmission and filter are at normal operating temperature. Check the Au-tomatic and filter Transmission and filter Fluid level with the engine running and the transmission and filter inneutral, with the parking brake properly applied. Use MOBIL DEXRON-II when adding or changing fluid. Refer to the chapter6. F070F01A-AAT
o Brake hoses and lines
Visually check for proper installation,
chafing, cracks, deterioration and any leakage. Replace any deteriorated or damaged parts immediately. F070G02A-AAT o Brake fluid Check brake fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir. The level should be between "MIN" and "MAX" marks on the side of the reservoir. Use onlyhydraulic brake fluid conforming to DOT 3 or DOT 4. F070H01HP-AAT
o Rear brake linings, pad and parking brake Check the rear brake linings and pads for scoring, burning, leaking fluid, bro-ken parts, and excessive wear. In- spect the parking brake system in- cluding the parking brake lever andcables. For detailed service proce- dures, refer to the Shop Manual.

looseness or damage. Retighten to the specified torque.

off, check for excessive free-play in the steering wheel. Check the linkage for bends or dam-

o Power steering pump, belt and hoses
Check the power steering pump and
hoses for leakage and damage. Re- place any damaged or leaking parts immediately. Inspect the power steer-ing belt for evidence of cuts, cracks, excessive wear, oil contamination and proper tension. Replace or adjust it ifnecessary.

o Drive shafts and boots
Check the drive shafts, boots and
clamps for cracks, deterioration, ordamage. Replace any damaged partsand, if necessary, repack the grease.

Brake Fluid Level
The fluid level in the brake fluid reser- voir should be checked periodically.The level should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks on the side of the reservoir. If the level is at or belowthe "MIN" mark, fluid should be added having carefully cleaned the area sur- rounding the reservoir cap to ensurethat dirt is not allowed to enter the system. It should be noted that the brake fluid level will decrease slightlyas the friction linings of the pads and shoes become worn and that this is a normal condition. WARNING:
Brake fluid is hygroscopic and
should never be stored in an un-sealed container. The presence ofwater in the braking system will cause vapour locks and increase the possibility of brake fade alongwith promoting corrosion within the braking system. The brake fluid must be changed at the specifiedtime or mileage interval to ensure continued safe operation of the system. Brake fluid will cause rapidand serious damage to paintwork. If accidental spillage occurs, the affected area must be rinsed withwater immediately. Do not allow brake fluid to come into contact with the eyes or to be ingestedand ensure that fluid is safely stored away form the reach of chil- dren. The clutch fluid level in the mastercylinder should be checked when per-forming other under bonnet checks. The system should be checked for leakage at the same time. Ensure that the clutch fluid level is always between the "MAX" and "MIN" level markings on the fluid reservoir.Fill as required. Fluid loss indicates a leak in the clutch system which should be inspected and repaired immedi-ately.
