Radio Navigation System MFD
RADIO NAVIGATION SYSTEM6
INTRODUCTION
The Radio Navigation System MFD (Multi
Function Display) provides you with easy
operation of the convenient radio and
navigation features in your vehicle. The system
can also be equipped with an original 6-disc
CD changer, a Digital Sound Package, a
package for dynamic navigation and a TV/
video module.
Navigation
The navigation system is your “intelligent pas-
senger”. With its help, you can travel from your
current location to any selected destination
quickly, easily and safely without having to use
a lot of complicated roadmaps. In cities and
towns unfamiliar to you, for example, you can
drive directly the nearest petrol station. On the
road, you can enter a point for a stopover to
eat at a restaurant or visit a tourist attraction.
The system uses the data stored on the
navigation CD to calculate the route to the
selected destination. During route guidance,
different display modes provide you with
information on your current vehicle position,
turning recommendations (direction and
distance to the turning point) and the remaining
travelling time to your destination. How does navigation work?
Satellite data is used to determine the vehi-
cle’s current position. The route travelled is
measured by the ABS sensor system. The gy-
roscope (rotating angle sensor) determines the
current driving direction. This information is fed
into the navigation system and compared to
the map information stored there.
Outside of built-up areas, this type of locating
might fail to determine the vehicle’s exact po-
sition. In this case, satellites are used for lo-
cating. This type of locating is known as the
Global Positioning System (GPS).
Important information
Operating the radio navigation
system while driving
The demands of today’s road traffic require the
full concentration of road users at all times.
In addition to entertainment, the extensive and
sophisticated features of this system also of-
fer a wide range of information to help you
reach your selected destination safely and
easily.
Nevertheless, you should never operate
the radio navigation system with its
many different features unless traffic
conditions permit.
The different volume settings should be select-
ed so that acoustic signals from the outside,
e.g. police or fire brigade sirens, can be heard
at all times.
RADIO NAVIGATION SYSTEM7
INTRODUCTION
Always devote your attention primari-
ly to driving! As the driver of a motor
vehicle, you bear full responsibility for
your road safety. Never operate the
radio navigation system in a way that
could interfere with your ability to
maintain control of your vehicle in all
traffic situations!
Anti-theft coding
Anti-theft coding is an electronic system that
prevents unauthorised persons from being able
to use this equipment once it has been dis-
connected from its power source.
If “SAFE” appears in the display when the sys-
tem is switched on, it will be necessary to en-
ter the correct code before it is possible to op-
erate the system - see page 63.
Before you use the navigation
system and the map display
•Please always observe all traffic regulations
in effect while driving.
•The route calculated by the navigation sys-
tem is a recommendation on how best to reach
your selected destination. While driving, please
be sure to observe no-stopping zones, traffic
lights, one-way streets, carriageway-change
restrictions, canals and ferries.
The Road Traffic Act always takes
priority over any driving recommenda-
tion provided.
•Street and place names may change. In
rare cases, the names stored on the CD might
not be the same as those used now.
Changing the navigation CD-ROM
To change the CD-ROM, press the CD eject
button 44 44
4. The navigation CD will eject.
Carefully insert the new navigation CD, with
the label facing upwards, into the CD slot until
it is automatically drawn into the unit.
Note
To ensure that the navigation system functions
reliably, always use clean CD-ROMs free of
scratches and other damage.
Always keep the CD-ROMs in the original cas-
es provided.
Always protect the CD-ROMs from direct sun-
light!
Do not write on or put stickers on the CD-
ROMs!
