o Don't coast down hills with the car
out of gear. This is extremely haz- ardous. Keep the car in gear at all times, use the brakes to slow down, then shift to a lower gear so thatengine braking will help you main- tain a safe speed.
o Don't "ride" the brake pedal. Rest- ing your foot on the brake pedalwhile driving can be dangerous be- cause it can result in the brakesoverheating and losing their effec- tiveness. It also increases the wear of the brake components.
o If a tire goes flat while you are driving, apply the brakes gently andkeep the car pointed straight aheadwhile you slow down. When you are moving slowly enough for it to be safe to do so, pull off the road andstop in a safe place.
o If your car is equipped with an auto-
matic transaxle, don't let your carcreep forward. To avoid creeping forward, keep your foot on the brake pedal when the car is stopped.
o Use caution when parking on a hill. Engage the parking brake and placethe gear selector lever in "P" (auto- matic transaxle) or in first or reversegear (manual transaxle). If your caris facing downhill, turn the front wheels into the curb to help keep the car from rolling. If your car is facinguphill, turn the front wheels away from the curb to help keep the car from rolling.If there is no curb or if it is required by other conditions to keep the car from rolling, block the wheels.
o Under some conditions your park- ing brake can freeze in the engagedposition. This is most likely to hap-pen when there is an accumulation of snow or ice around or near the rear brakes or if the brakes are wet.If there is a risk that the parking brake may freeze, apply it only tem- porarily while you put the gear se-lector lever in "P" (automatic) or in first or reverse gear (manual transaxle) and block the rear wheelsso the car cannot roll. Then release the parking brake.
o Do not hold the vehicle on the up- grade with the accelerator pedal.This can cause the transmission to overheat. Always use the brakepedal or parking brake.
ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAM (ESP)

The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) system is designed to stabilize thevehicle during cornering manuevers. ESP checks where you are steering and where the vehicle is actually going.ESP applies the brakes at individual wheels and intervenes in the engine management system to stabilize thevehicle. When driv- ing in severe winter conditions where this may happen, you should periodi-cally check underneath the car to be sure the movement of the front wheels and the steering components is notobstructed. Tires: Adjust the tire inflation pressures to specification. Low tire inflation pres-sures will result in overheating and possible failure of the tires. gine oil:
High speed travel consumes more fuel than urban motoring. Do not forget tocheck both engine coolant and engine oil. 3. When driving during the day in condi- tions of poor visibility, it is helpful todrive with headlights on low beam. This enables you to be seen as well as to see.

1. Before towing, check hitch andsafety chain connections as well as proper operation of the trailer run- ning lights, brake lights, and turn signals.
2. Always drive your vehicle at a mod- erate speed (Less than 100 km/H).
3. Trailer towing requires more fuel than normal conditions.
4. To maintain engine braking effi-
ciency and electrical chaarging per-formance, do not use fifth gear (manual transaxle) or overdrive (au- tomatic transaxle).
5. Always secure items in the trailer to prevent load shift while driving.
6. Check the condition and air pres- sure of all tires on the trailer and your car. Low tire pressure can seriously affect the handling. Alsocheck the spare tire. 7. The vehicle/trailer combination is
more affected by crosswind andbuffeting. When being passed by a large ve- hicle, keep a constant speed andsteer straight ahead. If there is too much wind buffeting, slow down to get out of the other vehicle's airturbulence.
8. When parking your car and trailer,
especially on a hill, be sure to followall the normal precautions. Turn your front wheel into the curb, set the parking brake firmly, and putthe transmission in 1st or Reverse (manual) or Park (automatic). In addition, place wheel chocks ateach of the trailer's tires.
9. If the trailer has electric brakes,
start your vehicle and trailer mov-ing, and then apply the trailer brake controller by hand to be sure the brakes are working. This lets youcheck your electrical connection at the same time.
10.During your trip, check occasion- ally to be sure that the load issecure, and that the lights and any trailer brakes are still working. 11. Avoid jerky starts, sudden accel-
eration or sudden stops.
12.Avoid sharp turns and rapid lane changes.
13.Avoid holding the brake pedal down too long or too frequently. This could cause the brakes to overheat, re- sulting in reduced braking efficiency.
14.When going down a hill, shift into a lower gear and use the engine brak-ing effect.When ascending a long grade, downshift the transmission to a lower gear and reduce speed toreduce chances of engine over- loading and/or overheating.
15.If you have to stop while going
uphill, do not hold the vehicle inplace by pressing on the accelera- tor. This can cause the automatictransmission to overheat. Use the parking brake or footbrake.
NOTE: When towing check transaxle fluid more frequently.

CAUTION:
If overheating should occur when towing, (temperature gauge readsnear red zone), taking the following action may reduce or eliminate the problem.
1. Turn off the air conditioner.
2. Reduce highway speed.
3. Select a lower gear when going uphill.
4. While in stop and go traffic, place the gear selector in park or neu- tral and idle the engine at a higher speed.

booster battery. Then attach the other end of that cable to a solidmetal part of the engine away from the battery. Do not connect the cable to any moving part.
4. Start the engine in the car with the booster battery and let it run for afew minutes. This will help to as-sure that the booster battery is fully charged. During the jumping opera- tion, run the engine in this vehicle atabout 2000 rpm.
5. Start the engine in the car with the
discharged battery using the nor-mal starting procedure. After the engine starts, leave the jumper cables connected and let the enginerun at fast idle or about 2000 rpm for several minutes.
6. carefully remove the jumper cables in the reverse order of attachment.
If you do not know why your battery became discharged (because the lights were left on, etc.), have the charging system checked by your Hyundaidealer. D030A02A-AAT If your temperature gauge indicates overheating, you experience a loss of power, or hear loud pinging or knock- ing, the engine is probably too hot. Ifthis happens to you, you should:
1. Pull off the road and stop as soon as
it is safe to do so.
2. Place the gear selector lever in "P"
(automatic), or neutral (manual transaxle) and set the parking brake. If the air conditioning is on, turn it off.
3. If engine coolant is running out un- der the car or steam is coming outfrom the hood, stop the engine. Donot open the hood until the engine coolant has stopped running or the steaming has stopped. If there is novisible loss of engine coolant and no steam, leave the engine running and check to be sure the enginecooling fan is operating. If the fan is not running, turn the engine off.
IF THE ENGINE OVERHEATS
4. Check to see if the water pump drivebelt is missing. If it is not missing, check to see that it is tight. If the drive belt seems to be satisfactory, check for engine coolant leakingfrom the radiator, hoses or under the car. (If the air conditioning had been in use, it is normal for coldwater to be draining from it when you stop).
WARNING:
While the engine is running, keephair, hands, and clothing away from moving parts such as the fan anddrive belts to prevent injury.
5. If the water pump drive belt is bro- ken or engine coolant is leaking out, stop the engine immediately andcall the nearest Hyundai dealer for assistance.

!WARNING:
Do not remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. This can allow coolant to be blown out of the open- ing and cause serious burns.
6. If you cannot find the cause of the overheating, wait until the engine temperature has returned to nor- mal. Then, if the engine coolant has been lost, carefully add coolant tothe reservoir (page 6-11) to bring the fluid level in the reservoir up to the halfway mark.
7. Proceed with caution, keeping alert for further signs of overheating. Ifoverheating happens again, call aHyundai dealer for assistance.
CAUTION:
Serious loss of engine coolant indi-cates there is a leak in the cooling system and this should be checked as soon as possible by a Hyundaidealer. D040A01GK-GAT The following instructions for the tem- porary spare tire should be observed:
1. Check inflation pressure as soon as
practical after installing the spare tire, and adjust to the specified pres- sure. The tire pressure should beperiodically checked and maintained at the specified pressure while the tire is stored.

5. The temporary spare tire should notbe used on any other wheels, norshould standard tires, snow tires, wheel covers or trim rings be used with the temporary spare wheel. Ifsuch use is attempted, damage to these items or other car compo- nents may occur.
6. The temporary spare tire pressure should be checked once a monthwhile the tire is stored.

7. Swithc "ON" the main beam
headlamps before carefully remov- ing the jumper cables have been removed, switch "OFF" the main beam geadlamps. SD040A2-E If the temperature gauge indicates overheating:
1. Pull off the road and stop as soon as
it is safe to do so.
2. Place the gear selector lever in "P"
(automatic), or neutral (manual transaxle) and set the parking brake. If the air conditioning is on, turn it off.
3. If coolant is running out under the car or steam is coming out fromunder the bonnet stop the engine. Do not open the bonnet until thecoolant has stopped running or the steaming has stopped. If there is no visible loss of coolant and no steam,leave the engine running and check to be sure the engine cooling fan is operating.If the fan is not running, turn the engine off.
4. Check to see if the water pump drive belt is broken. If it is not missing,check to see that it is tight. If the drive belt seems to be satisfac-tory,check for coolant leaking from the radiator, hoses or under the car. (If the air conditioning had been in use,it is normal for cold water to be draining from it).
IF THE ENGINE OVERHEATS
1. Ensure that the booster battery is 12 volt type. If the booster battery is installed in another vehicle, ensure that the two vehicles are not touch- ing.
2. Turn off all unnecessary electrical equipment in both vehicles.
3. Ensure that the engine of the ve- hicle providing the jump start is run- ning prior to connection of the jump cables.
4. Connect the red jump cable to the positive (+) terminal of the boosterbattery and the other end to thepositive (+) terminal of the dis- charged battery.
5. Attach the black jump cable to the negative (-) terminal of thebooster battery, and the other end to a ground point within the enginecompartment of the vehicle with the flat battery. Do not connect to the negative battery terminal of the flatbattery since sparks may be gener- ated with the subsequent risk of explosion.
6. Raise the booster vehicle engine speed to 2,000 r.p.m. and start theengine of the vehicle with the flatbattery. CAUTION:
If the jump cables are incorrectlyinstalled, damage to the vehicle elec-trical system may occur, in particu- lar the electronic components such as the Fuel Injection system com- puter and the Automatic Transaxle computer. The battery must neverbe disconnected whilst the engine is running.
