{CAUTION:
Never do this.
Here two children are wearing the same belt.
The belt can not properly spread the impact
forces. In a crash, the two children can be
crushed together and seriously injured. A belt
must be used by only one person at a time.
Q:What if a child is wearing a lap-shoulder belt,
but the child is so small that the shoulder belt
is very close to the child’s face or neck?
A:Move the child toward the center of the vehicle, but
be sure that the shoulder belt still is on the child’s
shoulder, so that in a crash the child’s upper
body would have the restraint that belts provide.

{CAUTION:
The body structure of a young child is quite
unlike that of an adult or older child, for whom
the safety belts are designed. A young child’s
hip bones are still so small that the vehicle’s
regular safety belt may not remain low on the
hip bones, as it should. Instead, it may settle
up around the child’s abdomen. In a crash, the
belt would apply force on a body area that is
unprotected by any bony structure. This alone
could cause serious or fatal injuries. Young
children always should be secured in
appropriate child restraints.
Child Restraint Systems
An infant car bed (A), a special bed made for use in a
motor vehicle, is an infant restraint system designed
to restrain or position a child on a continuous at
surface. Make sure that the infant’s head rests toward
the center of the vehicle.

What Makes an Airbag Inate?
In an impact of sufficient severity, the airbag sensing
system detects that the vehicle is in a crash. For
both frontal and side impact airbags, the sensing system
triggers a release of gas from the inator, which
inates the airbag. The inator, the airbag and related
hardware are all part of the airbag modules inside
the steering wheel, the instrument panel, and the side of
the front seatbacks closest to the door.
How Does an Airbag Restrain?
In moderate to severe frontal or near frontal collisions,
even belted occupants can contact the steering wheel or
the instrument panel. In moderate to severe side
collisions, even belted occupants can contact the inside
of the vehicle. Airbags supplement the protection
provided by safety belts. Airbags distribute the force of
the impact more evenly over the occupant’s upper
body, stopping the occupant more gradually. But
a frontal airbag would not help you in many types of
collisions, including rollovers, rear impacts, and
many side impacts, primarily because an occupant’s
motion is not toward a frontal airbag.A side impact airbag would not help you in many types
of collisions, including frontal or near frontal collisions,
rollovers, and rear impacts, primarily because an
occupant’s motion is not toward a side airbag. Airbags
should never be regarded as anything more than a
supplement to safety belts, and then only in moderate to
severe frontal or near-frontal collisions for frontal
airbags, and only in moderate to severe side collisions
for side impact airbags.
What Will You See After an Airbag
Inates?
After the airbag inates, it quickly deates, so quickly
that some people may not even realize the airbag
inated. Some components of the airbag module will be
hot for a short time. These components include the
steering wheel hub for the driver’s frontal airbag and the
instrument panel for the passenger’s frontal airbag.
For vehicles with side impact airbags, the side of the
seatback closest to the driver’s and/or passenger’s door
will be hot. The parts of the bag that come into
contact with you may be warm, but not too hot to touch.
There will be some smoke and dust coming from the
vents in the deated airbags. Airbag ination does
not prevent the driver from seeing or being able to steer
the vehicle, nor does it stop people from leaving the
vehicle.

7. Place the new, unrecognized transmitter in the
glove box transmitter pocket with the buttons
facing towards the passenger’s side.
8. Once the transmitter is programmed, a beep will
sound. The DIC will display READY FOR #X,
where X can be 3 or 4, or MAX # FOBS LEARNED.
9. Press the ACC button (ignition switch).
The Canadian immobilizer standard requires Canadian
owners to see their GM dealer for matching new
transmitters when a recognized transmitter is not
available. United States owners are permitted to match
a new transmitter to their vehicle when a recognizedtransmitter is not available. The procedure will require
three ten minutes cycles to complete the matching
process. Do the following:
1. The vehicle must be off.
2. Place the new, unrecognized transmitter in the
glove box transmitter pocket with the buttons
facing towards the passenger’s side.
3. Go to the rear of the vehicle and insert the vehicle
key into the key cylinder located above the license
plate. SeeHatch/Trunk on page 2-14for more
information on the key cylinder.
4. Open the trunk.

Battery Replacement
Under normal use, the battery in your keyless access
transmitter should last about three years.
You can tell the battery is weak if the transmitter will not
work at the normal range in any location. If you have
to get close to your vehicle before the transmitter works,
it is probably time to change the battery.
A weak battery may also cause the DIC to display NO
FOBS DETECTED when you try to start the vehicle.
If this happens, place the transmitter in the glove
box transmitter pocket with the buttons facing towards
the passenger’s side. Then, with the vehicle in PARK (P)
for an automatic transmission press the break pedal
and the START button, or if your vehicle has a manual
transmission, press the clutch and the START button.
Although this will start the vehicle, it is recommended
that you replace the transmitter battery as soon as
possible. The DIC may display FOB BATTERY LOW.
Notice:When replacing the battery, use care not to
touch any of the circuitry. Static from your body
transferred to these surfaces may damage the
transmitter.1. Insert a coin or similar object into the slot on the
back of the transmitter and gently pry apart the
front and back.
2. Gently pull the battery out of the transmitter.
3. Put the new battery in the transmitter, positive (+)
side down. Use a battery, type CR2032, or
equivalent.
4. Reassemble the transmitter. Make sure to put it
together so water will not get in.
5. Test the transmitter.

Ignition Positions
Your vehicle has an
electronic keyless ignition
with a pushbutton start.
/(START):Press this button while your foot is on the
brake for an automatic transmission, or while pressing
in the clutch for a manual transmission, to start the
engine. If your vehicle is in OFF or RAP mode,
the keyless access transmitter must be inside the
vehicle to start the engine.
9ACC (OFF/ACCESSORY):When the engine is on
or the vehicle is in accessory power mode, a manual
transmission must be placed in REVERSE (R) or
an automatic transmission must be placed in PARK (P),
then press the
9ACC button to turn the engine offand place the vehicle in RAP. See “Retained Accessory
Power (RAP)” later for more information. If a manual
vehicle is not correctly placed in REVERSE (R) a
SHIFT TO REVERSE message will display on the Driver
Information Center (DIC). If an automatic vehicle is
not correctly placed in PARK (P) a SHIFT TO PARK
message will display on the Driver Information
Center (DIC).

Notice:If you do not put a manual transmission in
REVERSE (R) before exiting your vehicle, your
vehicle will not be secured, the battery will drain
and could be damaged. Always put a manual
transmission in REVERSE (R) before shutting off the
engine and exiting the vehicle.
When the engine is off, press this button to place the
vehicle in accessory mode. ACCESSORY MODE
ON will display on the Driver Information Center (DIC).
This mode allows you to use things like the radio
and the windshield wipers while the engine is off. Use
accessory mode if you must have your vehicle in motion
while the engine is off, for example, if your vehicle is
being pushed or towed.
After being in accessory mode for about 20 minutes, the
vehicle will automatically enter RAP or OFF, depending
on if the doors are opened or closed.

REVERSE (R):Use this gear to back up.
Notice:Shifting to REVERSE (R) while your vehicle
is moving forward could damage the transmission.
The repairs would not be covered by your warranty.
Shift to REVERSE (R) only after your vehicle is
stopped.
To rock your vehicle back and forth to get out of snow,
ice or sand without damaging your transmission,
seeIf Your Vehicle is Stuck in Sand, Mud, Ice or Snow
on page 4-30.
NEUTRAL (N):In this position, your engine does not
connect with the wheels. To restart when you are
already moving, use NEUTRAL (N) only. Also, use
NEUTRAL (N) when your vehicle is being towed.
{CAUTION:
Shifting into a drive gear while your engine is
running at high speed is dangerous. Unless
your foot is rmly on the brake pedal, your
vehicle could move very rapidly. You could
lose control and hit people or objects. Do not
shift into a drive gear while your engine is
running at high speed.Notice:Shifting out of PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N)
with the engine running at high speed may damage
the transmission. The repairs would not be
covered by your warranty. Be sure the engine is not
running at high speed when shifting your vehicle.
AUTOMATIC OVERDRIVE (D):This position is
for normal driving.
THIRD (3):This position is also used for normal driving.
However, it offers more power and lower fuel economy
than AUTOMATIC OVERDRIVE (D).
Here are some times you might choose THIRD (3)
instead of AUTOMATIC OVERDRIVE (D):
When driving on hilly, winding roads.
When going down a steep hill.
