Drive select lever operation and reverse driv-
ingCAUTION:_ Before shifting, stop the machine and return
the throttle lever to its closed position, other-
wise the transmission may be damaged. _NOTE:_ When shifting into reverse, the clutch must be dis-
engaged. _1. Bring the machine to a complete stop and re-
turn the throttle lever to the closed position.
2. Pull in the clutch lever to disengage the
clutch.
3. Apply the brake pedal.
4. While pulling the knob, move the drive select
lever toward the rear until it completely stops.NOTE:_ When in reverse, the reverse indicator light should
be on. If the light does not come on, ask a Yamaha
dealer to inspect the machine. _

5. Check behind you for people or obstacles,
then release the brake pedal.
6. Open the throttle lever gradually and release
the clutch lever slowly. Continue to watch to
the rear while backing.
WARNING
_ Improper operation in reverse could make you
hit an obstacle or person behind you, resulting
in serious injury. When you shift into reverse,
make sure there are no obstacles or people be-
hind you. When it is safe to proceed, go slowly. _

Shifting
This model has a 6-speed forward and 1-speed re-
verse transmission. The transmission allows you
to control the amount of power you have available
at a given speed or for starting, accelerating,
climbing hills, etc. To shift into neutral, return the
throttle lever to the closed position, apply the
clutch and repeatedly depress the shift pedal until
it stops. When it stops, it will be in first gear. Raise
the pedal slightly to neutral.CAUTION:_
Do not coast for long periods with the en-
gine off, and do not tow the machine a
long distance. Even in neutral position,
the transmission is only properly lubricat-
ed when the engine is running. Inade-
quate lubrication may cause damage.
Always use the clutch when changing
gears. The engine, transmission and drive
train are not designed to withstand the
shock of forced shifting and can be dam-
aged by shifting without the clutch.

To start out and accelerate:
1. Release the throttle lever, and then release
the parking brake.CAUTION:_ Always close the throttle while shifting gears.
Otherwise, damage to the engine and drive
train may result. _2. Pull the clutch lever to disengage the clutch.
3. Shift into first gear.
4. Open the throttle gradually and at the same
time, release the clutch lever slowly.
5. Once the machine has attained adequate
speed, release the throttle, and at the same
time, quickly pull in the clutch lever.

6. Shift into second gear (be careful not to shift
into neutral).
7. Open the throttle part way and gradually re-
lease the clutch lever.
8. Follow the same procedure when shifting to
the next higher gear.
WARNING
_ Opening the throttle abruptly or releasing the
clutch lever too quickly would increase the
chance of an accident or could make the ma-
chine wheelie including overturn. Always open
the throttle gradually and release the clutch le-
ver gradually. _

1. Bring the machine to a stop by applying the
front brake.
2. With the front and rear brake applied, pull the
clutch lever, shift into the neutral position,
and then apply the parking brake.
3. Stop the engine by setting the engine stop
switch to “”.
4. With the front and rear brakes applied, pull
the clutch lever, shift into 1st gear, and then
slowly release the clutch lever, brake lever
and brake pedal.NOTE:_ Make sure that the neutral indicator light goes off. _5. Turn the key to “OFF”.

With the engine idling, pull the clutch lever to dis-
engage the clutch and shift into 1st gear, and then
release the parking brake. Open the throttle grad-
ually, and at the same time, release the clutch le-
ver slowly. Once the ATV has attained adequate
speed, release the throttle lever and at the same
time, quickly pull in the clutch lever and shift into
2nd gear. Open the throttle part way and gradually
release the clutch. Use this same procedure as
you move into the higher gears. Be sure to coordi-
nate the use of the throttle and shift pedal properly.
If the throttle is applied too abruptly or if the throttle
is not released during shifting, or if the shift pedal
is not released before applying the throttle, the
front wheels may lift off the ground resulting in a
loss of directional control. Avoid higher speeds un-
til you are thoroughly familiar with the operation of
your ATV.
WARNING
_ Always open the throttle gradually and release
the clutch lever slowly. Otherwise, the ATV
could wheelie which would increase the
chance of an accident. _
