GENERAL MAINTENANCE
WheelsSteel wheels
The wheels and the wheel covers should
also be thoroughly washed during the regu-
lar washing of the car. This prevents brake
abrasion, dirt and road salt forming depos-
its. Stubborn brake abrasion which adheres
to the wheels can be removed with an in-
dustrial dust remover. Damage to the
paintwork should be touched up before any
rust can form.
Light alloy wheels*
Regular care is required in order to retain
the decorative appearance of light alloy
wheels over a long period. It is particularly
necessary to thoroughly wash off road salt
and brake abrasion at least every two
weeks otherwise the light alloy finish will
suffer damage. After washing the wheels,
treat them with an acid-free cleaning prod-
uct for light alloy wheels. It is also neces-
sary to thoroughly rub hard wax into the
wheels about every three months. Do not
use paint polish or other abrasive products.
Damage to the paintwork of light-alloy
wheels should be touched up straightaway.Note
If the wheels are very dirty, this can re-
sult in imbalance. This causes vibra-
tions which are transmitted to the steer-
ing column and in addition results in pre-
mature wear.
Warning
Please note, when cleaning the wheels,
that moisture can affect the braking ac-
tion.HeadlightsPlease do not use any aggressive clean-
ing or chemical solvent products - risk of
damage to the plastic lenses.
Please use soap and clean warm water.
Do not clean the headlights dry or use any
sharp objects for cleaning the plastic
lenses. Otherwise, this can cause damage
to the protective paintwork and conse-
quently lead to formation of cracks on the
headlight lenses, e.g. through effect of
chemical products.
In addition, it is recommended to treat leat-
her which is subject to normal wear-and-
tear every six months with the leather care
product available from a Škoda Dealer. This
product should be applied very sparingly.
Leave for a short time and then wipe dry
with a soft cloth.
„Alcantara“ upholstery*Do not use any cleaning products for
leather for cleaning „Alcantara“ cloth.
Removing dust and dirt
Use a slightly moistened soft washing cloth
to wipe off the „Alcantara“ upholstery or
treat it with a suitable shampoo.
Removing stains
Moisten a soft cloth with water or diluted
alcohol and dab the stain working from the
edge into the middle.Seat covers for electric seat heater *Please
do not clean the seat covers wet.
The seat heater might otherwise be dam-
aged.
Please use special cleaning products, dry
foam, or similar for cleaning the seat cov-
ers.
158GENERAL MAINTENANCE
Motoring abroadPlease give consideration to the following
points when driving abroad with your car:
If your car is fitted with a petrol engine
and catalytic converter, it is important that
unleaded petrol is available on your route -
see also page 128. Information regarding
the availability of unleaded petrol can be
obtained from automobile associations.
In certain countries it is also possible that
the Škoda Dealership network is not fully
developed. Certain replacement parts may
therefore not be available or the personnel
of the Škoda Dealer may be able to carry
out repair work only to a limited extent.
ŠKODA AUTO a. s. in the Czech Republic
and the relevant importers will gladly pro-
vide you with the necessary information re-
garding preparing your car technically for
motoring abroad, the servicing required and
repair facilities.
The addresses of the Škoda dealers in
the @! can be found in the brochure
„Škoda dealers in @!“.
For all other countries, you will find a
contact address in the brochure „Trav-
elling assistant“ or in the local „ Work-
shop listing“.
Masking over headlightsAdapt your headlights for using the car in
countries in which the traffic drives on the
left-hand side: If you use your car in coun-
tries in which traffic drives on the left-hand
side of the road, other road users coming
toward you may be dazzled when you use
the headlights of your car which has been
designed for driving on the right-hand side
of the road. In order to eliminate this prob-
lem, you should mask over the left-hand
wedge-shaped areas of the headlight
lenses with an opaque adhesive strip.
The illustrations show how to mask over the
headlights of a car designed for driving on
the right-hand side of the road, when it is
used in a country in which traffic drives on
the left.
Adapting headlights with gas dis-
charge lamps* (applies to left-hand
and right-hand drive models)If you use your car in countries in which traf-
fic drives on the left-hand side of the road,
other road users coming toward you may
be dazzled when you use the headlights of
your car which has been designed for driv-
ing on the right-hand side of the road.
In order to eliminate this problem, the head-
lights must be adapted.
This adaptation is achieved by switching
over the shroud for low beam in the head-
light module.
This measure is carried out by your Škoda
Dealer. He can also provide you with more
detailed information on this matter.
Adapting the headlights with gas discharge
lamps is not a substitute for headlights
which are designed for driving on the right
or on the left, respectively.

Changing a wheelWarning
In the case of a flat tyre or punc-
ture, park the vehicle off the road,
switch on the hazard warning lights
and place the warning triangle in po-
sition - note any statutory require-
ments.
All the vehicle occupants should
leave the car and move to a safe area
(e.g. behind safety barrier).
Apply handbrake firmly and engage
a gear. Chock the opposite wheel with
a stone or similar if the car is stand-
ing on a slope.
Never start the engine when the
car is jacked up - risk of accident!
If towing a trailer, unhitch the
trailer from the car before changing
the wheel.
Carry out wheel change on a flat, level
surface, as far as possible.
Remove the car tool kit and spare wheel
from the luggage compartment.
Attach the wire hook (from the car tool
kit) at the edge of the full wheel trim* oppo-
site the air valve. Push the wheel wrench
through the wire hook and pull off the wheel
trim - see illustration.
If light-alloy wheels are fitted, use the
plastic clip supplied to pull off the covers
for the wheel bolts.
Unscrew the safety wheel bolts* - see
page 166.
Fit wheel wrench onto the wheel bolt as
far as the stop and turn to the left. Hold the
wrench as close as possible to its end for
this operation. If the bolts cannot be slack-
ened, you can carefully apply pressure to
the end of the wheel wrench with your foot.
Ensure that you are standing properly and
hold tight on the car. Slacken the wheel
bolts about one turn.

The fuse assignment differs depending on
the version of your car.
The pliers for removing fuses and replace-
ment fuses are not contained in the car
equipment.
Replacing a bulbThe relevant light should always be swit-
ched off first of all before replacing a bulb.
Do not grasp the glass of the bulb with your
bare fingers (even the minutest spot of dirt
reduces the operational life of the bulb).
Use a clean cloth, napkin or similar.
A bulb should only be replaced by a lamp
of the same design . The designation is
given on the base of the bulb or on the
glass.
Warning
H4 bulbs are pressurized and may
burst when they are replaced. For
this reason, always wear gloves and
eye protection when changing a H4
bulb. Models with Xenon headlamps*
If your car is fitted with xenon head-
lights, have the bulb (low beam, side
light and main beam) replaced by a
Škoda dealer.
We recommend always carrying with you in
the car a box with a set of spare bulbs, which
you received together with your car, or which
is available from your Škoda Dealer
