Steering lock Before starting, unlock the steer-
ing if necessary, by gently turningthe steering wheel at the same
time as you turn the key. It is advisable to press the clutch
pedal while operating the starter
to make starting easier. Starting a petrol engine
Do not press the accelerator.
Operate the starter, without
releasing the key, until the engineturns.
Starting a diesel engine
Do not press the accelerator.
Turn the key to the second notch. If the engine is warm enough, the pre-heat light does not come on
and you can start immediately. If the pre-heat light comes on, wait for it to go out before operat-
ing the starter. If the engine stalls, it is necessary
to return the key to the STOPposition before restarting. Never race a coldengine. Never run the engine in a confined space.
Do not make any modifications tothe steering lock.

CRUISE CONTROL The cruise control makes it possible to maintain a constant vehicle speed
programmed by the driver, whatever the condition of the road and withoutaction on the accelerator or brake pedal.
To be memorised, the vehicle speed must be above 25 mph (40 km/h) or 37 mph (60 km/h), depending on the engine, with at least 4th gearengaged (2nd gear for the automatic gearbox). Operation Place knob 1in the ONposition.
A speed can be memorised. Place knob 1in the OFFposition to deactivate the system.
Memorising a speed When you reach the required speed, press button 2or 3. The speed is
memorised and will be maintained automatically.Note: it is possible to accelerate temporarily without deactivating the
cruise control.
Deactivation of the memorised speedIf you wish to deactivate the memorised speed: press button 4or the clutch or brake pedal.
Recalling the memorised speedFollowing deactivation, press button 4. Your vehicle resumes
the last speed memorised. Do not use the cruise control on slippery roadsor in heavy traffic.

DRIVING YOUR 406 COUPE127
CRUISE CONTROL Cruise control enables the vehicle to maintain a steady speed pro-
grammed by the driver, regardless ofthe road characteristics and withoutthe driver having to touch the accel-erator or brake pedals. In order for it to be memorised, the vehicle speed must be greater than25 m.p.h (40 km/h) or 40 m.p.h
(60 km/h), depending on the engine, and fourth gear at least must beengaged (second gear for the auto-matic gearbox). Operation
Place switch 1in the ONposition.
A speed can be memorised. Place switch 1in the OFF position
to cancel.
Memorising a speedAs soon as you reach the chosen speed, press button 2or 3. This
memorises the speed, which will be
maintained automatically. Note:
It is possible to accelerate and drive
momentarily at a speed greater than the memorised speed. When the acceleratorpedal is released, the vehicle will return tothe memorised speed. Cancelling the memorised speed If you wish to cancel the memorised speed: press button 4or the brake or
clutch pedal.
Recalling the memorised speedAfter cancellation, press button 4.
Your vehicle will return to the last memorised speed. Changing a memorised speed
To memorise a speed higher than the previous one: press button 3;
release it when you have reached the required speed.
To memorise a speed lower than theprevious one: press button 2;
release it when you have reached the required speed.
Cancelling the cruise control Place switch 1in the OFF position
or switch off the ignition.
Do not use cruise control on slippery roads or in heavytraffic. THE ABS ANTI-LOCK BRAKINGSYSTEM When used with approved
tyres in good condition, the ABS increases the stability and manoeu-vrability of your vehicle, particularlyon poor or slippery road surfaces. The anti-lock braking system comes into operation automatically whenthere is a risk of wheel lock.
EMERGENCY BRAKING
ASSISTANCE SYSTEM
In an emergency, this system enables the optimum braking pres-
sure to be reached more quickly, thus reducing the stopping distance. It is triggered by the speed at which
the brake pedal is activated. The
effect of this is a reduction in theresistance of the pedal and an
increase in braking efficiency. The normal operation of the ABSmay make itself felt by slightvibrations of the brake pedal. In emergency braking, press very firmly without releasingthe pressure.

CHECKING THE LEVELS Oil level Check the level regularly and top up between changes. Maximum con-sumption is 0.5 litres per 600 miles(1 000 km). The oil level should be checked with the vehicle level and the engine coldusing the oil gauge or the dipstick.Dipstick There are two marks on the dipstick: A=maximum
Never fill past this mark. B= minimum
To maintain the reliability of the engines and of theemission control sys-tems, the use of additivesin the engine oil is prohib-ited.
Oil change According to the information given in
"PEUGEOT SERVICING" .
Note: avoid any prolonged contact of
used oil with the skin.
Viscosity selection In all cases, the oil selected must meet the manufacturer's require-ments.

Brake and clutch fluid level:
- The level should always bebetween the DANGER and MAX
marks on the reservoir.
- If the level drops substantially, con- tact a PEUGEOT dealer immedi-
ately.
Fluid change:
- must be carried out according to the manufacturer's servicing schedule.
- use fluids recommended by the manufacturer, which fulfil DOT 4standards.
Note: the brake fluid is noxious and
very corrosive. Avoid any contactwith the skin. Coolant level Use the fluid recommended by the
manufacturer. When the engine is warm, the tem- perature of the coolant is controlledby the engine fan. Because this fan
can operate with the ignition off andbecause the cooling system is pres-surised, wait for at least one hourafter the engine has stopped beforecarrying out any work.
To avoid any risk of burns, slacken the cap to the first notch to releasethe pressure. When the pressure hasdropped, remove the cap and top upthe level. Used products Do not dispose of used oil, brake fluid or coolant down drains or on theground. Power steering fluid level Open the reservoir with the engine
cold at ambient temperature. Thelevel should always be above theMIN mark, close to the MAX mark.
Windscreen and headlamp* wash fluid level For best quality cleaning and for your
safety, we advise that you useproducts recommended by
PEUGEOT.
