THE HANDBRAKE
To apply When parking on a slope, turn the wheels towards the kerb and applythe handbrake.
To release Pull the handle and press the button to release the handbrake and movethe vehicle.
Disarming the ESP/ASR systems In certain exceptional conditions
(vehicle stuck in mud or snow, or onloose ground...), it could prove useful
to disarm the ASR and ESP systemsto make the wheels spin and regaingrip.
Press the switch "ESP OFF", sit-
uated to the left of the steering wheel.
The switch lights up and the indicatorlights come on, accompanied by themessage '' ASR/ESP de-activated''
on the multi-function display: the
ESP and ASR systems no longer
affect the operation of the engine orthe brakes. They engage again: automatically when the ignition is
switched off,
manually by pressing the switchagain. The ASR/ESP systemsoffer increased safety dur-ing normal driving, butshould not incite the driver
to take risks or to drive at highspeed. The operation of these systems is assured on condition that therecommendations of the manufac-turer regarding the wheels (tyresand wheel rims), the braking com-ponents, the electronic compo-nents and the assembly andrepair procedures within thePEUGEOT network are respected. After an accident or impact, have the system checked by a
PEUGEOT dealer.
Operating check When a system malfunctionoccurs, the switch lightflashes and the indicatorlight comes on.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer tocheck the system.
TRACTION CONTROL (ASR)
AND DYNAMIC STABILITY
CONTROL (ESP) These systems are linked and com-
plement the ABS.
The ASR system optimises drive to prevent the wheels skidding, by act-ing on the brakes of the drive wheelsand on the engine. It also allows thedirectional stability of the vehicle tobe improved on acceleration. If there is a variation between the tra- jectory followed by the vehicle and
that required by the driver, the ESPsystem automatically acts on theengine and the brake of one or morewheels, in order to put the vehicleback on course.
Operation of the ASR and ESP systems
The warning light flashes if
the ASR or ESP is activated.

DRIVING YOUR 406 COUPE127
CRUISE CONTROL Cruise control enables the vehicle to maintain a steady speed pro-
grammed by the driver, regardless ofthe road characteristics and withoutthe driver having to touch the accel-erator or brake pedals. In order for it to be memorised, the vehicle speed must be greater than25 m.p.h (40 km/h) or 40 m.p.h
(60 km/h), depending on the engine, and fourth gear at least must beengaged (second gear for the auto-matic gearbox). Operation
Place switch 1in the ONposition.
A speed can be memorised. Place switch 1in the OFF position
to cancel.
Memorising a speedAs soon as you reach the chosen speed, press button 2or 3. This
memorises the speed, which will be
maintained automatically. Note:
It is possible to accelerate and drive
momentarily at a speed greater than the memorised speed. When the acceleratorpedal is released, the vehicle will return tothe memorised speed. Cancelling the memorised speed If you wish to cancel the memorised speed: press button 4or the brake or
clutch pedal.
Recalling the memorised speedAfter cancellation, press button 4.
Your vehicle will return to the last memorised speed. Changing a memorised speed
To memorise a speed higher than the previous one: press button 3;
release it when you have reached the required speed.
To memorise a speed lower than theprevious one: press button 2;
release it when you have reached the required speed.
Cancelling the cruise control Place switch 1in the OFF position
or switch off the ignition.
Do not use cruise control on slippery roads or in heavytraffic. THE ABS ANTI-LOCK BRAKINGSYSTEM When used with approved
tyres in good condition, the ABS increases the stability and manoeu-vrability of your vehicle, particularlyon poor or slippery road surfaces. The anti-lock braking system comes into operation automatically whenthere is a risk of wheel lock.
EMERGENCY BRAKING
ASSISTANCE SYSTEM
In an emergency, this system enables the optimum braking pres-
sure to be reached more quickly, thus reducing the stopping distance. It is triggered by the speed at which
the brake pedal is activated. The
effect of this is a reduction in theresistance of the pedal and an
increase in braking efficiency. The normal operation of the ABSmay make itself felt by slightvibrations of the brake pedal. In emergency braking, press very firmly without releasingthe pressure.
