Operating system
If you have set constant headlamp
mode and the light switch is at 0, the
following light up automatically when
the engine is running:
! Side lamps and dipped-beam head-
lamps
! Licen ceplate lighting
i If you turn the light switch toanoth erposi-
tion, the appropriate light switches on.
If you reset the settings in theLightingmenu
to the factory settings ( =
page 12 2)while you
are driving, this set ting will not be reset for
safet yreasons.
You will see th efollowi ngmessage in the dis-
play:
Cannot be completely reset to
factory settings whiledriving!
Setting the surround lighti ng
If you switch on the surround lighting, the
following light up in the dark after you have
unlocked the vehicle using the remote con-
trol:
! The side lam ps
! The tail lamps
! The licence plate lighting
! The front foglamps
The surround lighting switches off when
you open the driver's door. The surround
lighting is switched off automatically after
40 seconds.
6 Move the bar to the
Ligh tingsubmenu
using theæ orç button.
6 Press the jork button repeat-
edly until you see the
Function
Surround lighting
message.
The current setting ishighlighted. 6
Using the æ orç button, switch
the surround lighting
onoroff.
Set exterior lighting delayed switch-off
You can set whether and for how long you
wish the exterior lighting to remain on in
the dark after closing the doors by using
the
Headla mps delayed switch-offfunc-
tion
. When you have set the delayed
switch-off and have switched off the
eng ine, the following light up:
! The side lamps
! The tail lamps
! The licence plate lighting
! The front fog lamps

You can reactivate thi sfunction within ten
mi nutes by ope ning a door.
If neither of the doors is opened after the
engine is switched off or if a door isnot
closed after ithas been opened, the lights
go out after 60 seconds.

Select the length of time you wish the
lights to remain on by pressing the

You can temporarily deactivate delayed
switc h-off:
6 To do this, turn theke y to position 0in
the ignition lock before leaving the
veh icle.
6 Then turn it to position 2an d back to 0.
The delayed switch-off isdeactivated.
It is reactivated as soon as you start
the engine again. Setting int

This function allows you to set whether and

to remain on in the dark after you have
removed the key from the ignition lock.

You will find information about mist edup
windscreens (= pages 159 and 169) and
demisting ( =pa ges 159 and 169) in the
"Thermatic" and "Thermotronic" sections.
The switch is located on the left next to the
steering wheel.
1 Headlamp cleaning 6
Make sure that the ignition isswitched
on.
6 Briefly press switch 1.
The headlamps are cleaned with a high-
pressur ewater jet. Rear-view mirror,
manual anti-da zzle
1 Anti-dazzle lever
6 Flick over anti-dazzl elever 1.
The rear-view mirror goes into anti-daz-
zle mode. Automatic anti-da
zzle mirrors*
The driver's side exterior mirror and the
rear-view mirror adjust automatically if:
! the ign ition is swi tched on and
! light from headlamps falls onthe sen-
sor in the rea r-view mirror
The mirrors do not go into anti-da zzle
mode when:
! reverse gear is engaged

work, immediately rinse the pai ntworkthor-
oughly with clean wa ter. Oth erwise, the
el ectrolyte could damage the paintwork.

Risk of accident If incident headlamp ligh
tcannot strike the
sensor in the rear-view mirror, for instance,
if the rear window blind is extended, the mir-
ror's automatic anti-dazzle function will not
operate.
You could be dazzled byincident light. As a
result, you may nolon ger be able to observe
road and tra ffic condition sand cau sean
accid ent.In this case , flick theanti-dazzle
lever over by hand so that the rear-view mir-
ror goes into anti-dazzle mode ( =
page 148).
Do not permanently dea ctivate the anti-daz-
zle function. G

El ectrolyte is a strong irritant and must not
be allowed to come into contact with your
skin, ey esor respiratory organ s.
If electrolyte comes into contact with your
eyes or skin, immediately rinse thoroughly

Engine compartment
The windscreen
washer system and the
headlamp cleaning system have a common
supply from the windscreen washer fluid
re servoir. The reservoir has a capac ityof
either three or six litres (for vehicles with
either the headlamp cleaning system* or
the heate dwindscreen washer reservoir*).
Add windscreen washer concentrate to the
water all year round to prevent smearing.
Use:
! a washer flu idaddit ive, e.g. MB Sum-
merwash, for temperatures above
freezing point, to prevent smearing. !
a washer fluid additive, e.g. MB Winter-
wash, when there is a risk of frost, to
prevent the water from freezing on the
windscreen.
Mix the windscreen was her fluid in a con-
tainer beforehand. Adapt the mixing ratio
to sui tthe outside temperatures.
The windscreen washer fluid reservoir is
located in the front of the engine compart-
ment on the left-hand side when viewed in
the direction of travel.

Driving abroad
An extensive network of Mercedes-Benz
Service Centres is also at your disposal
when you are travelling abroad. The appro-
priate workshop directories are available
from any Mercedes-Benz Service Centre.
Only low-octane fuel is available in certain
countries.
You will fin dfurther information about fuel
grades in the "Operation" section
( = page 241). If your journey takes you to countries in
wh
ich traffic drives on the opposite side
of the road to the country where the vehi-
cle is reg istered, your headl amps should
be masked or parti ally masked to ensure
that the headlamps are at symmetrical
dipped beam*. Oncoming traffic will then
be dazzled less.
6 Mask the headlamps with special adhe-
sive sheets.
These sp ecial masking sheets can be
obtained at a qual ified specialist work-
shop, e.g. at a Mercedes-Benz Service
Centre.
Or depending on your vehicle's equipment:
6 Have the bi-xenon headlamps*
switched to symmetri cal dipped beam
at a qualified specialist workshop, e.g.
at a Merce des-Benz Service Centre.
You may obtain further information from a
Mercedes-Benz Service Centre. !
Mercede s-Be nz recommends that you only
use genuine Merced es-Benz adh esivesheets,
otherwise your headlamps could be damaged.
Remember to switch the headlamps to asym-
metrical dipped-beam headlamps again once
you are driving on the side of th eroad for the

Care Cleaning the headlamps

Wipe the headlamp lenses with a wet
sponge.
! Only use windscreen washer fluid which is
suitable for plasti clamp lenses. Unsuitable wind-
screen washer fluid could damage the plastic
lamp lenses of the headlamps .You must not
th er efore use a dry cloth ,sco uring agents, sol-
vents or solvent-b ased cle aning agents. You
could otherwise scratch or damage the surface
of the lens. Cl

6 Clean radiator grille cover 1with
water, shampoo and a soft cloth.

The sensors are located in the front and
rear bumpers.

Clean the sensors on the bumpers us-
ing water, shampoo and a soft cloth.
! Do not use dry, coarse or hard cloths and do
not scrub. Othe rwise, you will scratch or damage
the sensors. If youare cleaning the sensors with
a high-pressure or steam cleaner, direct it only
briefly at the sensors, maintaining a distance of
