The compass may not show the correct direction in the
following conditions:
The vehicle is stopped immediately after turning.
The compass does not adjust while the vehicle is stopped.
The ignition switch is turned off immediately after turning.
The vehicle is on an inclined surface.
The vehicle is in a place where the earth's magnetic field is
subject to interference by artificial magnetic fields
(underground parking, under a steel tower, between
buildings, roof parking, near a crossing, near a large vehicle,
etc.).
The vehicle is magnetized. (There is a magnet or a metal
object on or near the inside rear view mirror.)
The battery has been disconnected.
Your vehicle is out of the set zone. Refer to the Calibrating the
compassº in this Section to set the zone number.
The compass works to calibrate the direction automatically
while the vehicle is in motion, if deviation is small.For additional precision or for complete calibrating, see
Calibrating the compassº below.

218If the direction is not indicated or the system does not operate
properly, contact your Lexus dealer.

Compass sensor
NOTICE
Do not put magnets or a metal object on or near the
inside rear view mirror of the vehicle. Doing this may
cause malfunction of the compass sensor in the mirror.

219 Calibrating the compass (deviation calibration)
The direction display on the compass deviates from the true
direction determined by the earth's magnetic field. The angle
of deviation varies according to the geographic position of the
vehicle.To adjust this deviation, stop the vehicle, then push and hold
the COMPº switch until the zone number appears on the
display. Then push the COMPº switch, referring to the
following map to select the number of the zone where the
vehicle is.
Hawaii: 6
Samoa: 5
Guam: 7
Saipan: 7
Puerto Rico: 10

Zone numbersLeaving the system after the calibration for several seconds,
the direction will appear on the display. It shows the zone
number is set.
CAUTION
Do not adjust the display while the vehicle is moving.
Be sure to adjust the display only when the vehicle is
stopped.
Calibrating the compass (circling calibration)
To rectify the compass, stop the vehicle and push and hold the
COMPº switch until Cº appears on the display.
There is also a case that Cº appears on the display in case of
the drastic change of the magnetic field.

Drive the vehicle slowly (at 8 km/h [5 mph] or lower) in a circle
until the direction is displayed. If there is not enough space to
drive in a circle, drive around the block until the direction is
displayed.
After driving in 1 to 3 circles in the above method, calibration
is complete with the direction shown on the display.Perform circling calibration just after you have purchased
your Lexus. And then always perform circling calibration
after the battery has been removed, replaced or
disconnected.
Do not perform circling calibration of the compass in a place
where the earth's magnetic field is subject to interference by
artificial magnetic fields (underground parking, under a steel
tower, between buildings, roof parking, near a crossing,
near a large vehicle, etc.).
During calibration, do not operate electric systems (moon
roof, power windows, etc.) as they may interfere with the
calibration.
CAUTION
When doing the circling calibration, be sure to secure
a wide space, and watch out for people and vehicles
in the neighborhood. Do not violate any local traffic
rules while performing circling calibration.
Do not adjust the display while the vehicle is moving.
Be sure to adjust the display only when the vehicle is
stopped.

BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE
1. Check the area around the vehicle before entering it.
2. Adjust seat position, seatback angle, head restraint height
and steering wheel angle.
3. Adjust the inside and outside rear view mirrors.
4. Lock all doors.
5. Fasten seat belts.
Remember to check that the service reminder indicators
function when turning the key to ONº, and check the fuel
gauge to see that you have sufficient fuel.
IGNITION SWITCH WITH STEERING
LOCK
STARTº Ð Starter motor on. The key will return to the
ONº position when released.
For starting tips, see page 374.
It is not a malfunction even if the needle of the tachometer, fuel
gauge or engine coolant temperature gauge returns to the
bottom position when the ignition switch is turned to the
STARTº position.
ONº Ð Engine on and all accessories on.
This is the normal driving position.
It is not malfunction even if the needle on the speedometer may
move when the ignition switch is turned to the ONº position.

1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
2. With the brake pedal held down with your foot, shift the
selector lever to the Rº position.
NOTICE
Never shift into reverse while the vehicle is moving.
When the shift lever is shifted into Rº position, the outside rear
view mirrors automatically down to help backing up. For
details, see page 213.
Vehicles with rear view monitor system Ð
When the selector lever is shifted into Rº position with the
ignition switch in the ONº position, rear view monitor system
will activate. For instructions, see Rear view monitor systemº
on page 388.
