damaged.
8. Install the oil filter element, and O-ring.
9. Install the oil filter cover by installing the bolts.
10. Install the oil strainer, compression spring
and drain bolt. Tighten the drain bolt and oil
filter cover bolts to the specified torques.CAUTION:_ Before installing the drain bolt, be sure to in-
stall the O-ring, compression spring and oil
strainer. _11. Fill the engine with oil, and then install the

CAUTION:
Be sure no foreign material enters the crank-
case. 12. Warm up the engine for several minutes at
idle speed. Check for oil leakage while warm-
ing up.CAUTION:
If oil leakage is found, stop the engine immedi-
ately and check for the cause. Recommended oil:

Oil pressure check
1. Put a cloth around the cylinder.
2. Slightly loosen the oil gallery bolt in the cylin-
der head.
3. Start the engine and keep it idling until oil be-
gins to seep from the oil gallery. If no oil
comes out after one minute, turn the engine
off so it will not seize and find the cause.
4. Start the engine, and then check the oil pres-
sure.
5. After checking, tighten the oil gallery bolt to
the specified torque.CAUTION:_ Be sure to check the oil pressure after replac-
ing the engine oil. _
Tightening torque:

7. Apply SAE 10W30 motor oil to the air filter el-
ement.NOTE:_ The element should be wet but not dripping. _8. Apply all-purpose grease to the air filter ele-
ment seat.
9. Install the air filter element on the guide.
10. Install the air filter element assembly and
parts removed for access.NOTE:_ The air filter element should be cleaned every 20–
40 hours. It should be cleaned and lubricated more
often if the machine is operated in extremely dusty
areas. Each time air filter element maintenance is
performed, check the air inlet to the filter case for
obstructions. Check the air cleaner rubber joint to
the carburetor and manifold fittings for an airtight
seal. Tighten all fittings securely to avoid the pos-
sibility of unfiltered air entering the engine.

Lubricating the drive chain
The drive chain must be cleaned and lubricated at
the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance
and lubrication chart, otherwise it will quickly wear
out, especially when riding in dusty or wet areas.
Service the drive chain as follows.CAUTION:_ The drive chain must be lubricated after wash-
ing the ATV or riding in the rain. _1. Clean the drive chain with kerosene and a
small soft brush.CAUTION:_ To prevent damaging the O-rings, do not clean
the drive chain with steam cleaners, high-pres-
sure washers or inappropriate solvents. _2. Wipe the drive chain dry.
3. Thoroughly lubricate the drive chain with a
special O-ring chain lubricant.CAUTION:_ Do not use engine oil or any other lubricants
for the drive chain, as they may contain sub-
stances that could damage the O-rings. _

Cable inspection and lubrication
WARNING
Inspect cables frequently and replace if dam-
aged. Corrosion can result when the outer cov-
ering of control cables becomes damaged.
Cables can also become frayed or kinked. Op-
eration of controls could be restricted, which
could cause an accident or injury.Lubricate the inner cables and the cable ends. If
the cables do not operate smoothly, ask a Yamaha
dealer to replace them.

B. STORAGE
Long term storage (60 days or more) of your ma-
chine will require some preventive procedures to
guard against deterioration. After thoroughly
cleaning the machine, prepare for storage as fol-
lows:
1. Fill the fuel tank with fresh fuel and add fuel
stabilizer (if available).NOTE:Use of fuel stabilizer eliminates the need to drain
the fuel system. Consult a Yamaha dealer if the
fuel system is to be drained instead.2. Remove the spark plug, pour about one ta-
blespoon of SAE 10W30 or 20W40 motor oil
in the spark plug hole and reinstall the spark
plug. Ground the spark plug wire and turn the
engine over several times to coat the cylinder
wall with oil.
3. Clean the drive chain thoroughly and lubri-
cate it. (See page 8-63.)
4. Lubricate all control cables.
