pg. 2 Seat belts
Seat belts
Always fasten the seat belts before you drive or ride. A chime will soun\
d several times if the
driver's seat belt is not fastened.
To buckle:
Pull the belt out far enough to insert the latch plate into the receptac\
le until a distinct click is heard. The
seat belt retractor is normally "unlocked" and you can move freely, prov\
ided that the shoulder belt is not
pulled out too far. The retractor will lock up as follows:
l if the belt is pulled out rapidly
l during braking and acceleration
l if the vehicle is leaning excessively
l when driving in turns
For the seat belt to provide maximum protection in the event of an accid\
ent, it must be worn correctly.
When wearing the seat belt remember:
l The belt should not be twisted or turned.
l The lap belt must be positioned low on the hips (not pressing against t\
he abdomen).
Make sure that the shoulder belt is rolled up into its retractor and tha\
t the shoulder and lap belts are taut.
Before exiting the car, check that the seat belt retracts fully after be\
ing unbuckled. If necessary, guide
the belt back into the retractor slot.
NOTE: Legislation in your state or province may mandate seat belt usage.

If the BRAKE and ABS warning lights come on at the same time, this could\
indicate a fault in the
brake system.
l Stop the car in a suitable place and switch off the engine.
l Restart the engine.
l If both warning lights go off, no further action is required.
l If both lights are still on after the engine has been restarted, switch \
off the engine again and check the
brake fluid level (see
page 137 and for the location of the brake fluid reservoir).
WARNING!
If the fluid level is below the MIN mark in the reservoir, DO NOT DRIVE.\
Have the car towed to an
authorized Volvo retailer and have the brake system inspected.
l If the brake fluid level is above the MIN mark, drive carefully to an au\
thorized Volvo retailer and
have the brake system inspected.
pg. 20 STC/DSTC
Stability Traction Control (STC)*/ Dynamic Stability Traction
Control (DSTC)**
The stability systems consist of a number of functions:
The following two functions are common to both STC/DSTC
1. Traction control (TC)
This function is designed to help reduce wheel spin by transferring powe\
r from a drive wheel that begins
to lose traction to the wheel on the opposite side of the car (on the s\
ame axle). TC monitors and
compares the rotational speed of the drive wheels. If one of the drive w\
heels shows a tendency to spin,
the difference in speed is immediately detected. This triggers the Anti-\
lock Brake System, which brakes
the spinning wheel until the difference in rotational speed is corrected\
.
TC is most active at low speeds, and a pulsating sound will be audible w\
hen the system is regulating
wheel spin. This is quite normal.
This is one of the STC/DSTC's permanent functions and is not affected wh\
en the button on the center
control panel is pressed.
2. Spin control (SC)
The spin control function is designed to help prevent the drive wheels f\
rom spinning while the car is

The STC/DSTC button in the center control panel (see page 30) is used \
to switch the Spin Control (SC)
function on or off.
NOTE: AYC (on models equipped with this function) will also be reduced, but\
not switched off, if SC
is switched off.
The button must be pressed for at least a half second to prevent SC from\
being switched off
inadvertently.
When the function has been switched off, the green indicator lamp in the\
button will go out and "SPIN
CONTROL OFF" will be displayed in the text window.
All STC/DSTC functions are (re)activated each time the engine is start\
ed.
The Stability Control indicator light
The Stability Control indicator light will come on for approximately 2 s\
econds when the ignition is
switched on as the system performs a self-diagnostic test.
The Stability Control indicator light will flash when:
l Traction Control is actively functioning to help avoid drive-wheel spin.\
l Spin Control is actively functioning to help avoid loss of traction duri\
ng acceleration.
l Active Yaw Control is actively functioning to help avoid skids or latera\
l slides.
The warning symbol in the instrument panel
A steady yellow glow indicates:
l That the system has been automatically disengaged due to a fault. "ANTI \
SKID SERVICE
REQUIRED" be displayed in the text window. An authorized Volvo retailer \
should check the system.
l The system has been temporarily switched off due to high brake temperatu\
re. "TRACTION
CONTROL TEMPORARILY OFF" will be displayed.
NOTE: The system will automatically switch on again when the brakes have cool\
ed.

Malfunction indicator lamp
On-Board Diagnostic II (OBDII): As you drive, a computer called "OBDII" monitors your car's engine,
transmission, electrical and emission systems. The CHECK ENGINE light wi\
ll light up if the computer
senses a condition that potentially may need correcting. When this happe\
ns, please have your car checked by
a Volvo retailer as soon as possible.
A CHECK ENGINE light may have many causes. Sometimes, you may not notice\
a change in your car's
behavior. Even so, an uncorrected condition could hurt fuel economy, emi\
ssion cleanliness, and driveability.
Extended driving without correcting the cause could even damage other co\
mponents in your car.
Canadian models are equipped with this warning light:
NOTE: If the fuel filler cap is not closed tightly or if the engine is runni\
ng when the car is refueled, the
Malfunction Indicator Lamp may indicate a fault. However, your vehicle's\
performance will not be affected.
Use only Volvo original or approved fuel filler caps.
Anti-lock Brake System ABS
If the warning light comes on, there is a malfunction of the ABS system \
(the standard braking system will
still function). The vehicle should be driven to a Volvo retailer for i\
nspection. See
page 19 for additional
information.

SC) function of the STC/DSTC system on
or off. An LED in the switch will light up to indicate that the system i\
s on. See
pages 20-21 for more
information on STC/DSTC. The SC function should be switched off if you, \
for any reason, temporarily have
to drive with tires of different dimensions (e.g., spare tire).
To help reduce the risk that the SC function is turned off inadvertently\
, the switch must be held in for at least
half a second to disable this function. " STC/DSTC SPIN CONTROL OFF" wil\
l be displayed in the text
window.
WARNING!
Please be aware that the car's handling characteristics may be affected \
if the Spin Control function is

downshift will not occur until the speed has decreased enough to allow t\
he lower gear to be used.
l If you slow down to a very low speed, the transmission will automaticall\
y shift down.
l When starting in the (MAN)ual position, 3rd gear is the highest gear t\
hat may be selected.
NOTE: Kickdown (see previous page) does not function when the transmission is in the manual shift
(geartronic) mode. The gear selector must be in the D (Drive) positi\
on.
W Winter/Wet driving mode - enhanced vehicle traction
l Mode W will function only if the gear selector is in the (D)rive posit\
ion.
l Press the button at the base of the gear selector to engage/disengage th\
is driving mode (see

l An LED in the button will light up to indicate that W is engaged and this will also be displayed in the
instrument panel (see
page 27).
l This mode may be selected for starting/moving off on slippery roads.
pg. 94 All Wheel Drive - option
All Wheel Drive (AWD) - general information
Your Volvo can be equipped with permanent All Wheel Drive, which means t\
hat power is distributed
automatically between the front and rear wheels. Under normal driving co\
nditions, most of the engine's
power is directed to the front wheels. However, if there is any tendency\
for the front wheels to spin, an
electronically controlled coupling distributes power to the wheels that \
have the best traction.
Tire dimensions
Volvo recommends that you always drive on tires of the same brand, size,\
construction (radial), tread

Uniform tire quality grading
ALL PASSENGER CAR TIRES MUST CONFORM TO FEDERAL SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
IN ADDITION TO THESE GRADES
Quality grades can be found, where applicable, on the tire sidewall betw\
een the tread shoulder and
maximum section width. For example:
Treadwear 200 Traction AA Temperature A
TREADWEAR
The treadwear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of th\
e tire when tested under
controlled conditions on a specified government test course. For example\
, a tire graded 150 would wear
one and one half (1 1/2) times as well on the government course as a t\
ire graded 100. The relative
performance of tires depends upon the actual conditions of their use, ho\
wever, and many depart
significantly from the norm due to variation in driving habits, service \
practices and differences in road
characteristics and climate.
TRACTION
The traction grades, from highest to lowest, are AA, A, B, and C, as mea\
sured under controlled
conditions on specified government test surfaces of asphalt and concrete\
. A tire marked C may have
poor traction performance. WARNING!
The traction grade assigned to this tire is based on braking (straight-\
ahead) traction tests and is not a
measure of cornering (turning) traction.
TEMPERATURE
The temperature grades are AA (the highest), A, B, and C, representing\
the tire's resistance to the
generation of heat and its ability to dissipate heat when tested under c\
ontrolled conditions on a specified
indoor laboratory test wheel. Sustained high temperature can cause the m\
aterial of the tire to degenerate
and reduce tire life, and excessive temperature can lead to sudden tire \
failure. The grade C corresponds
to a minimum level of performance which all passenger car tires must mee\
t under the Federal Motor
Safety Standard No. 109. Grades B and A represent higher levels of perfo\
rmance on the laboratory test
wheel than the minimum required by law.
