Fadinganddrifting
FMrangeislimitedtoabout25miles(40km),
exceptforsomehighpowerstations.
Ifavehicleismovingawayfromthedesiredsta-
tion'stransmitter,thesignalwilltendtofade
and/ordrift.Thisconditionismoreprevalent
withFMthanAM,andisoftenaccompaniedby
distortion.
Fadinganddriftingcanbeminimizedtoacertain
degreebycarefulattentiontofinetuningorse-
lectionofastrongersignal.
Staticandfluttering
Whentheline-of-sightlinkbetweenatransmitter
andvehicleisblockedbylargebuildingsor
mountains,theradiosoundmaybeaccompa-
niedwithstaticorflutteringbecauseofthechar-
acteristicofFM.
Inasimilareffect,aflutteringnoiseissome-
timesheardwhendrivingalongatree-linedroad.
Thisstaticandflutteringcanbereducedbyad-
justingthetonecontrolforgreaterbassre-
sponseuntilthedisturbancehaspassed.
Multipath
BecauseofthereflectingcharacteristicsofFM,
directandreflectedsignalsmayreachthean-
tennaatthesametime(multipath)andcancel
eachotherout.
Asavehiclemovesthroughtheseelectronic
deadspots,thelistenermayhearamomentary
flutterorlossofreception.
Stationswapping
WhentwoFMstationsareclosetoeachother,
andanelectronicdeadspot,suchasstaticor
multipatharea,interruptstheoriginalsignal,
sometimesthestrongersecondsignalwillbe
selectedautomaticallyuntiltheoriginalonere-
turns.
Thisswappingcanalsooccurasyoudriveaway
fromtheselectedstationandapproachanother
stationofastrongersignal.
