TIMING CHAIN

REMOVAL
1. Remove the following parts.

RH front road wheel and tire

Undercover and splash guard (RH)

PCV hose; Refer to EM-19, "INTAKE MANIFOLD" .

Ignition coil; Refer to EM-31, "IGNITION COIL" .

Rocker cover; Refer to EM-39, "ROCKER COVER" .

Reservoir tank of radiator; Refer to CO-13, "RADIATOR" .

Drive belt; Refer to EM-14, "DRIVE BELTS" .

Alternator; Refer to SC-27, "CHARGING SYSTEM" .

Drive belt auto-tensioner; Refer to EM-15, "Removal and Installation of Drive Belt Auto-Tensioner" .

Exhaust front tube; Refer to EX-2, "EXHAUST SYSTEM" .
2. Drain engine oil. Refer to LU-9, "
Changing Engine Oil" .
CAUTION:
Perform this step when engine is cold.
3. Remove A/C compressor with piping connected. Temporarily secure A/C compressor to vehicle side with
a rope to avoid putting a load on them. Refer to ATC-134, "
Removal and Installation of Compressor" .
4. Remove power steering oil pump with piping connected, and secure it to vehicle side temporarily. Refer to
PS-39, "
HYDRAULIC LINE" .
5. Securely support bottom of transaxle with suitable transmission jack.
6. Remove RH engine mounting insulator. Refer to EM-77, "
ENGINE ASSEMBLY" .
7. Remove oil pans (upper and lower), and oil strainer. Refer to EM-26, "
OIL PAN AND OIL STRAINER" .
8. To support engine, temporarily tighten removed front and rear engine mounting through-bolts for removing
oil pans (upper and lower). Refer to EM-77, "
ENGINE ASSEMBLY" .
9. Remove intake valve timing control cover with the following procedure:
a. Disconnect intake valve timing control solenoid valve harness connector.
b. Disconnect ground cables and remove harness clip.
c. Remove intake valve timing control solenoid valve, if necessary.
d. Loosen bolts in reverse order as shown in the figure.

uid gasket for removal.
CAUTION:
Be careful not to damage the mating surfaces.
10. Pull chain guide between camshaft sprockets out through front cover.
11. Set No. 1 cylinder at TDC on its compression stroke with the following procedure:
a. Rotate crankshaft pulley clockwise and align TDC mark to timing
indicator on front cover.

INSPECTION
In cases of removing/installing or replacing camshaft and valve-
related parts, or of unusual engine conditions due to changes in
valve clearance (found malfunctions during stating, idling or causing
noise), perform inspection as follows:
1. Remove rocker covers (right and left banks). Refer to EM-160, "
ROCKER COVER" .
2. Remove splash guard (RH).
3. Measure the valve clearance as follows:
a. Set No. 1 cylinder at TDC of its compression stroke.

Rotate crankshaft pulley clockwise to align timing mark
(grooved line without color) with timing indicator.

Make sure that intake and exhaust cam noses on No. 1 cylin-
der (engine front side of right bank) are located as shown in
the figure.

If not, rotate crankshaft one revolution (360 degrees) and
align as shown in the figure.

16. Measure pinion rotating torque using the preload adapter [SST]
and preload gauge [SST] to make sure that the measured value
is within the standard. Readjust if the value is outside the stan-
dard. Replace steering gear assembly if the value is outside the
standard after readjusting or adjusting screw rotating torque is 5
N·m (0.51 kg-m, 44 in-lb) or less.
17. Apply recommended Liquid Gasket to inner socket and turn pin-
ion fully to left with inner socket installed to gear housing assembly.
18. Set dial indicator as shown in the figure. Measure vertical move-
ment of rack assembly when pinion is turned clockwise with
torque of 19.6 N·m (2.0 kg-m, 14 in-lb). Readjust adjusting
screw angle if the measured value is outside the standard.
Replace gear assembly if the measured value is still outside the
standard or adjusting screw rotating torque is 5 N·m (0.51 kg-m,
44 in-lb) or less.
19. Install large end of boot to gear housing assembly.
20. Install small end of boot to inner socket boot mounting groove.
21. Install boot clamp to boot small end.
22. Install large side of boot clamp.

Tighten large side of boot with boot clamp (stainless wire).

Wrap clamp around boot groove for two turns. Insert a flat-
bladed screwdriver in loops on both ends of wire. Twist 4 to
4.5 turns while pulling them with force of approximately 98 N
(10 kg, 22 lb).

7. Disconnect the horn switch connector and spiral cable connec-
tor.
NOTE:
Disconnect the horn switch connector, and then the spiral cable
connector.
CAUTION:
Do not tap or bump the steering wheel.
8. Loosen screws. While pushing upper plastic tab, remove spiral cable.
INSTALLATION
Install in the reverse order of removal.
CAUTION:

If it is mounted in the inappropriate position, spiral cable
may be cut when performing steering operation.

Also, with the steering linkage disconnected the cable may
snap by turning the steering wheel beyond the limited num-
ber of turns. The spiral cable can be turned counterclock-
wise about 2.5 turns from the right end position.

Do not twist spiral cable freely or excessively after it
becomes tight (doing so may cause the cable to be torn
off).

Secure air bag harness to the harness fixing hook.

Check SRS air bag warning lamp to make sure that the sys-
tem works normally after finishing work.

If SRS air bag warning lamp indicates a DTC exists, reset
with self-diagnosis and erase the memory using CONSULT-
II.

After the operation above, if SRS air bag warning lamp still
shows a non-standard condition, perform system trouble
diagnosis again, and repair or replace the indicated compo-
nent. Refer to SRS-16, "
SRS Operation Check" .
