TOWING ATTACHMENTS
It is strongly recommended that only an Hyundai
Approved towing attachment is used to ensure that the loads placed upon the body structureare correctly distributed. The use of a nonapproved attachment will result in the invalida-tion of the vehicle warranty. Hyundai towingattachments are designed and constructed toensure maximum towing performance and easeof fitment. A range of accessories includingelectrical kits and mirrors are available throughthe Hyundai dealer network.
It is of the utmost importance that those areas
of the vehicle which are subjected to greaterstress during towing are maintained in accor-dance with the recommendations given at theend of this book. In addition, the daily operatingchecks relating to engine oil, transaxle oil andtyres must be performed at each refuelling toensure maximum reliability and safety.
The use of a proprietary stabiliser will assist in
achieving an inherently stable outfit but whilstthe use of such equipment will improve thecharacteristics of a balanced outfit, it will notcompensate for a badly loaded and thereforeunstable outfit.
The tyres and braking equipment fitted to the
trailer or caravan must be maintained in accor-dance with the recommendations of the manu-facturer. Special attention should be paid totyres which deteriorate through time and expo- sure rather than as a result of the distancestowed. The inside walls of the tyres should beinspected along with the outside walls for crack-ing and damage. The trailer wheel nut torquemust be checked on a regular basis, preferablybefore each towing session.
The trailer towbar hitch and the safety catch
mechanism must be maintained in good work-ing order. The trailer break away cable or cableshould be inspected for damage and should beattached to the vehicle towing attachment eachand every time the trailer is hitched to thevehicle.
Whilst towing, the performance of the vehicle
will be reduced in terms of acceleration, brakingand handling due to the increased loads placedupon the vehicle. The driver should anticipatethe change in characteristics and adjust thedriving style in keeping with these changes.Care should be exercised when cornering andbraking to prevent the outfit becoming uncon-trollable by reducing cornering speeds and al-lowing increased braking distances.
The driver should exercise care to ensure that
when pulling away from rest particularly onuphill gradients the clutch unit is not subjectedto excessive slippage which will reduce theuseful life of this component. Use of the "Over-drive Off" "2" and "L" positions when drivingvehicles with automatic transaxle will assistwith braking performance when long down hill gradients are encountered. Improved accelera-tion performance will be available by selecting"Overdrive Off","2", or "1" depending upon roadspeed if it is found that the transaxle unit makesan undesirable upshift whilst hill climbing orovertaking. The transaxle unit should be oper-ated in "D" with the Overdrive "On" undernormal circumstances to enhance fuel economyand reduce noise and engine wear.

1. Before towing, check towbar hitch and safe-
ty cable connections as well as proper oper- ation of the trailer running lights, brake lights,and turn signals.
2. Always drive your vehicle at a moderate speed (Less than 60mph).
3. Trailer towing requires more fuel than nor- mal conditions.
4. To maintain engine braking efficiency, do not tow a trailer with the transaxle engagedin an overdrive gear.
5. Always secure items in the trailer to prevent load shift while driving.
6. Check the condition and air pressure of all tires on the trailer and your car. Low tirepressure can seriously affect the handling.Also check the spare tire.
7. The vehicle/trailer combination is more af- fected by crosswind and buffeting. When being passed by a large vehicle, keep a constant speed and steer straight ahead.If there is too much wind buffeting, slowdown to get out of the other vehicle's airturbulence.
8. When parking your car and trailer, especial- ly on a hill, be sure to follow all the normalprecautions. Turn your front wheel into thecurb, set the parking brake firmly, and putthe transaxle in 1st or Reverse (manual) orPark (automatic). In addition, place wheelchocks at each of the trailer's tires.

9. If the trailer has electric brakes, start your
vehicle and trailer moving, and then apply the trailer brake controller by hand to besure the brakes are working. This lets youcheck your electrical connection at the sametime.
10. During your trip, check occasionally to be sure that the load is secure, and that thelights and any trailer brakes are still working.
11. Avoid jerky starts, sudden acceleration or sudden stops.
12. Avoid sharp turns and rapid lane changes.
13. Avoid holding the brake pedal down too long or too frequently. This could cause the brakes to overheat, resulting in reduced brakingefficiency.
14. When going down a hill, shift into a lower gear and use the engine braking effect. When ascending a long grade, downshift the transaxle to a lower gear and reduce speedto reduce chances of engine overloadingand/or overheating.
15. If you have to stop while going uphill, do not hold the vehicle in place by pressing on theaccelerator. This can cause the automatictransaxle to overheat. Use the parking brakeor footbrake. NOTE: When towing check transaxle fluid more
frequently.
CAUTION:If overheating should occur when towing,
(temperature gauge reads near red zone), taking the following action may reduce oreliminate the problem.
1. Turn off the air conditioner.
2. Reduce highway speed.
3. Select a lower gear when going uphill.
4. While in stop and go traffic, place the gear selection in park or neutral and idle the engine at a higher speed.

the transaxle selector is at the "P" or"N" position.
2. Check the battery terminals and connections to ensure that these are clean and also tight.
3. If the ignition warning lamps dim when the engine is cranked and the battery terminalshave been checked, a discharged battery isindicated.
4. Do not attempt to push or tow start the ve- hicle, refer to "Jump Starting" for informationregarding engine starting when the battery isdischarged.

SD020A1-E IF THE ENGINE WILL NOT STARTSeek assistance from the nearest Hyundai dealer with regard to the method of ignition and fuelsystem diagnosis. WARNING: If the engine refuses to start, no attemptshould be made to push or tow start thevehicle. Vehicles with automatic transaxle orfuel injection will not be able to be started inthis manner since no drive is transmittedthrough the automatic transaxle whilst theengine is not running, and in the case of fuelinjected derivatives, the fuel pump will notoperate under tow start conditions. In addi-tion, if the vehicle is equipped with an ex-haust catalyst, damage to the catalyst mayresult if the vehicle is tow started. SD020B1-E IF THE ENGINE CANNOT BE CRANKED
1. If the vehicle is fitted with manual transaxle, ensure that the clutch pedal is depressedwhilst cranking the engine. If the vehicle isfitted with automatic transaxle, ensure that D010C01A-AAT If Engine Turns Over Normally but Does Not Start

2. With the key in the off position, check all
connectors at ignition coils and spark plugs.Reconnect any that may be disconnected orloose.
3. Check the fuel line in the engine room.
4. If engine still refuses to start, call a Hyundai dealer or seek other qualified assistance.

1. Reduce your speed gradually, keeping a straight line. Move cautionsly off the road to a safe place.
2. Turn on your emergency flashers.

CAUTION: Personal injury and damage to the vehicle may occur if jump starting is not performedcorrectly. If any doubt exists as to how thisoperation should be performed, seek assis-tance from qualified personnel.

3-2 4. Check to see if the water pump drive belt is
missing. If it is not missing, check to see that it is tight. If the drive belt seems to be satisfac-tory, check for coolant leaking from the radia-tor, hoses or under the car. (If the air condi-tioning had been in use, it is normal for coldwater to be draining from it).
WARNING:Whilst the engine is running, keep hands andclothing away from moving parts such as thefan and drive belts to prevent injury.
5. If the water pump drive belt is broken or coolant is leaking out, stop the engine imme- diately and call the nearest Hyundai dealerfor assistance.
WARNING:Do not remove the radiator cap when theengine is hot since steam and boiling watermay be ejected from the radiator resulting inburns or scalding.
6. If the cause of the overheating cannot be found, wait until the engine temperature has returned to normal. Then, if coolant has beenlost, carefully remove the radiator cap andadd water to bring the fluid level in the reser-voir up to the base of the radiator fill opening.Fill the coolant expansion tank to the halfwaymark.
WARNING:Motor vehicle batteries contain sulphuric acidand emit hydrogen gas. Protective clothingshould be worn and care exercised to preventthe acid from coming into contact with skin orclothing and the vehicle. Naked lights shouldnot be permitted in the vicinity of the battery.Care should be exercised to prevent sparksoccurring during connection. If acid acciden-tally comes into contact with skin or eyes, theaffected area should immediately be flushedwith copious amounts of water and medicalassistance sought.
1. Ensure that the booster battery is 12 volt type.
If the booster battery is installed in another vehicle, ensure that the two vehicles are nottouching.
2. Turn off all unnecessary electrical equipment in both vehicles.
3. Ensure that the engine of the vehicle provid- ing the jump start is running prior to connec-tion of the jump cables.
4. Connect the red jump cable to the positive (+) terminal of the booster battery and the otherend to the positive (+) terminal of the dis-charged battery.
5. Attach the black jump cable to the negative (-) terminal of the booster battery, and theother end to a ground point within the enginecompartment of the vehicle with the flat bat-tery. Do not connect to the negative batteryterminal of the flat battery since sparks maybe generated with the subsequent risk ofexplosion. 6. Raise the booster vehicle engine speed to
2,000 r.p.m. and start the engine of the vehi-cle with the flat battery.
7. Remove jump cables in the reverse order of installation (black cable first).
CAUTION:If the jump cable is incorrectly installed, dam-age to the vehicle electrical system may oc-cur, in particular the electronic componentssuch as the Fuel Injection system computerand the Automatic Transaxle computer. Thebattery must never be disconnected whilstthe engine is running. SD040A1-E IF THE ENGINE OVERHEATSIf the temperature gauge indicates overheating:
1. Pull off the road and stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
2. Place the gear selector lever in "P" (auto- matic), or neutral (manual transaxle) and set the parking brake. If the air conditioning is on,turn it off.
3. If coolant is running out under the car or steam is coming out from under the bonnetstop the engine. Do not open the bonnet untilthe coolant has stopped running or the steam-ing has stopped. If there is no visible loss ofcoolant and no steam, leave the engine run-ning and check to be sure the engine coolingfan is operating.If the fan is not running, turn the engine off.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY
SD060A1-E IN THE EVENT OF A PUNCTUREIf a puncture occurs whilst driving the vehicle:
1. Bring the car to rest as soon as it is safe to do so and with the minimum amount of braking required which will assist in main-taining the maximum amount of control. Thevehicle should be parked wherever possibleupon firm level ground to facilitate wheelchanging.
2. If the vehicle is creating a hazard and the road conditions do not permit the wheel to bechanged safely, assistance should be sought.
3. Passengers must not be allowed to remain inside the vehicle during wheel changing. Ifa puncture occurs whilst the vehicle is on a SD070A1-E CHANGING A FLAT TYRE
7. Proceed with caution until it is established
that the engine is operating normally. If the engine overheats repeatedly, the advice of aHyundai dealer should be sought.
CAUTION:Serious loss of coolant indicates there is aleak in the cooling system and this should bechecked as soon as possible by a Hyundaidealer.
It is of the utmost importance that care is exer-cised when changing road wheels. Ensure thatthe parking brake is set and that the gear shiftlever is in reverse (P, if the vehicle has automatictransaxle).
D040A01GK-EAT TEMPORARY SPARE TYREThe following instructions for the temporary spare tyre should be observed:
1. Check inflation pressure as soon as practical
after installing the spare tyre, and adjust to the specified pressure. The tyre pressure shouldbe periodically checked and maintained atthe specified pressure while the tyre is stored.
2. The spare tyre should only be used temporari-
ly and should be returned to the luggagecompartment as soon as the original tyre canbe repaired or replaced.
3. Continuous use at speeds of over 50 mph (80 km/h) is not recommended. 4. As the temporary spare tyre is specifically
designed for your car, it should not be used onany other vehicle.
5. The temporary spare tyre should not be used on any other wheels, nor should standardtyre, snow tyre, wheel covers or trim rings beused with the temporary spare wheel. If suchuse is attempted, damage to these items orother car components may occur.
6. The temporary spare tyre pressure should be checked once a month while the tyre is stored.
CAUTION:
o Do not use snow chains with your tempo- rary spare tyre.
o Do not use more than one temporary spare tyre at a time.

The Specified scheduled procedures are listed
in the maintenance charts beginning at page 5- 2. The operations specified must be performedat the time or mileage intervals shown irrespec-tive of whether the mileage interval has beenreached before the specified time interval.
Certain lubricants and components degrade
with both time and mileage (e.g. engine oil andbrake fluid) and therefore it is not permissableto base the maintenance schedule upon mile-age alone. It is strongly recommended that themaintenance operations are performed by thefactory-trained or distributor-trained techniciansat your Hyundai dealer because of the need forspecialized knowledge and tooling and to en-sure that no possibility of invalidating the man-ufacturers warranty exists.
The maintenance schedules relate to vehicles
operated under normal conditions, vehicles which are operated under adverse conditionswill require more frequent maintenance which isdescribed at page 5-4. SF030B1-E SERVICE HISTORY It is important that all scheduled maintenance services are recorded in the warranty and ser-vice passport to ensure that proof of mainte-nance is available when warranty service isrequired.

Inspect the surface of hoses for evidence of heat and/or mechanical damage. Hard and brittle rub-ber, cracking, tears, cuts, abrasions, and exces-sive swelling indicate deterioration. Particularattention should be paid to examining those hosesurfaces nearest to high heat sources, such asthe exhaust manifold.Inspect the hose routing to assure that the hoses do not come in contact with any heat source,sharp edges or moving component which mightcause heat damage or mechanical wear. Inspectall hose connections, such as clamps and cou-plings, to make sure they are secure, and that noleaks are present. o Fuel filterA clogged filter can limit the speed at which the vehicle may be driven, damage the emissionsystem and cause hard starting. If an excessiveamount of foreign matter accumulates in the fueltank, the filter may require replacement morefrequently.After installing a new filter, run the engine forseveral minutes, and check for leaks at theconnections.
