PASSENGER DOOR AJAR
If the passenger's door is not fully closed this message
will appear on the display and you will hear a chime.
Stop and turn off the vehicle, check the door for
obstacles, and close the door again. Check to see if the
message still appears on the DIC. Pressing the select
button will acknowledge this message and clear it from
the DIC display.
LEFT REAR DOOR AJAR
If the driver's side rear door is not fully closed this
message will appear on the display and you will hear a
chime. Stop and turn off the vehicle, check the door for
obstacles, and close the door again. Check to see if the
message still appears on the DIC. Pressing the select
button will acknowledge this message and clear it from
the DIC display.RIGHT REAR DOOR AJAR
If the passenger's side rear door is not fully closed this
message will appear on the display and you will hear a
chime. Stop and turn off the vehicle, check the door for
obstacles, and close the door again. Check to see if the
message still appears on the DIC. Pressing the select
button will acknowledge this message and clear it from
the DIC display.
RFA # BATTERY LOW
If a remote keyless entry transmitter battery is low this
message will appear on the DIC. The battery needs to
be replaced in the transmitter. Pressing the select button
will acknowledge this message and clear it from the
DIC display.

Comfort Controls
This section tells you how to use the comfort controls.
With these systems, you can control the heating,
cooling and ventilation in your vehicle. Your vehicle
also has a flow
-through ventilation system described
later in this section.
Comfort Controls Personalization
(If Equipped)
If your vehicle is equipped with the automatic comfort
control system and memory seats and mirrors, you
can store and recall the climate control settings for
temperature, air delivery mode and fan speed for
two different drivers. The personal choice settings
recalled are determined by the transmitter used to enter
the vehicle. After the button with the unlock symbol on
a remote keyless entry transmitter is pressed, the climate
control will adjust to the last settings of the identified
driver. The settings can also be changed by pressing
one of the memory buttons (1 or 2) located on the
driver's door. When adjustments are made, the new
settings are automatically saved for that driver.
Manual Dual Zone Comfort Controls
With this system, you can select different comfort
control settings for the driver and passengers.
Fan Knob
The knob on the left side of the climate control panel
regulates the fan speed. You can choose from
five different fan speeds or turn the fan off.
Driver's Side Temperature Lever
The lever on the left side of the climate control panel is
used to adjust the air temperature on the driver's side,
independent of the temperature set by the passenger.
Slide the lever upward to raise the temperature. Slide the
lever downward to lower the temperature.

COMP/AUDIO (COMP) Compression: Press and
release this button to display the current compression
displayed on the screen. Press this button again to
select the next compression state. Three compression
states are available including minimum, standard and
off. The compression feature only functions on AC3
(Dolby Digital) encoded DVD video discs.
Press and hold this button to see if the DVD playing
has optional audio tracks, such as different languages
or commentaries. Press and release to change selections.
INPUT/TITLE DVD AUX (Auxiliary): Press and
release this button to switch between the auxiliary input
device and the DVD player.
Press and hold this button to see a display of the DVD's
titles. Press and release to change the titles available.
RTN (Return): When a DVD menu is active and
the return button is pressed, the selected option will be
disabled. This button could have different functions with
different discs.
SCREEN BRIGHTNESS: Press the plus or
minus symbol to increase or decrease the brightness
of the screen. This button can also be found above the
video screen.
LIGHT: Press this button to illuminate the keypad
for about eight seconds.Setup Menu
To access the setup menu, ensure a DVD disc is in the
player and the video is in stop mode. Press the menu key.
Once the menu is activated, use the UP, DOWN, RIGHT,
LEFT, and Enter buttons to navigate the screen.
The setup menu allows the user to select default preferences
for Menu Language, Subtitle Language, Audio Language,
TV Aspect, TV Mode, and Dynamic Range Compression.
Not all DVDs support all the feature defaults in the
setup menus. In the event a particular feature is not
supported, defaults will be provided by the DVD media.
Exit the setup menu by pressing the RETURN button
on the remote control. If you make changes to the
system setup defaults, the disc will resume play from
it's beginning and not where it previously left off.
Battery Replacement
To change the batteries, do the following:
1. Unclip the battery door located on the back of
the remote control.
2. Remove the batteries from the compartment.
3. Replace the two AA batteries. Make sure that
they are installed correctly.
If the remote control is to be stored for a long period
of time, remove the batteries and keep them in a cool,
dry place.

Drunken Driving
Death and injury associated with drinking and driving is
a national tragedy. It's the number one contributor to
the highway death toll, claiming thousands of victims
every year.
Alcohol affects four things that anyone needs to drive
a vehicle:

Judgment

Muscular Coordination

Vision

Attentiveness.
Police records show that almost half of all motor
vehicle
-related deaths involve alcohol. In most cases,
these deaths are the result of someone who was drinking
and driving. In recent years, about 16,000 annual motor
vehicle
-related deaths have been associated with the use
of alcohol, with more than 300,000 people injured.
Many adults
-- by some estimates, nearly half the adult
population
-- choose never to drink alcohol, so they
never drive after drinking. For persons under 21, it's
against the law in every U.S. state to drink alcohol.
There are good medical, psychological and
developmental reasons for these laws.The obvious way to solve the leading highway safety
problem is for people never to drink alcohol and then
drive. But what if people do? How much is ªtoo muchº
if the driver plans to drive? It's a lot less than many
might think. Although it depends on each person
and situation, here is some general information on
the problem.
The Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of someone
who is drinking depends upon four things:

The amount of alcohol consumed

The drinker's body weight

The amount of food that is consumed before and
during drinking

The length of time it has taken the drinker to
consume the alcohol.
According to the American Medical Association, a
180
-lb. (82 kg) person who drinks three 12-ounce
(355 ml) bottles of beer in an hour will end up with a
BAC of about 0.06 percent. The person would reach the
same BAC by drinking three 4
-ounce (120 ml) glasses
of wine or three mixed drinks if each had 1
-1/2 ounces
(45 ml) of a liquor like whiskey, gin or vodka.

4-18 Traveling to Remote Areas
It makes sense to plan your trip, especially when going
to a remote area. Know the terrain and plan your route.
You are much less likely to get bad surprises. Get
accurate maps of trails and terrain. Try to learn of any
blocked or closed roads.
It's also a good idea to travel with at least one other
vehicle. If something happens to one of them, the
other can help quickly.
Does your vehicle have a winch? If so, be sure to read
the winch instructions. In a remote area, a winch can be
handy if you get stuck. But you'll want to know how to
use it properly.
Getting Familiar with Off-Road Driving
It's a good idea to practice in an area that's safe and
close to home before you go into the wilderness.
Off
-road driving does require some new and different
driving skills. Here's what we mean.
Tune your senses to different kinds of signals. Your
eyes, for example, need to constantly sweep the terrain
for unexpected obstacles. Your ears need to listen for
unusual tire or engine sounds. With your arms, hands,
feet and body, you'll need to respond to vibrations and
vehicle bounce.Controlling your vehicle is the key to successful
off
-road driving. One of the best ways to control your
vehicle is to control your speed. Here are some things to
keep in mind. At higher speeds:

you approach things faster and you have less time to
scan the terrain for obstacles.

you have less time to react.

you have more vehicle bounce when you drive
over obstacles.

you'll need more distance for braking, especially
since you're on an unpaved surface.
CAUTION:
When you're driving off-road, bouncing and
quick changes in direction can easily throw you
out of position. This could cause you to lose
control and crash. So, whether you're driving on
or off the road, you and your passengers should
wear safety belts.

Hazard Warning Flashers
Your hazard warning flashers let you warn others. They
also let police know you have a problem. Your front and
rear turn signal lamps will flash on and off.
The button for the
hazard warning flashers
is located on top of the
steering column.
The hazard warning flashers work no matter what
position your key is in, and even if the key isn't in.
Press the button all the way down to make your front
and rear turn signal lamps flash on and off. To turn off
the flashers, press the button again until it clicks and
then release it.
When the hazard warning flashers are on, the turn
signals won't work.
Other Warning Devices
If you carry reflective triangles, you can set one up at
the side of the road about 300 feet (100 m) behind
your vehicle.

If the system is ever reset accidentally, you must change
your oil at 3,000 miles (5 000 km) since your last oil
change. Remember to reset the oil life system whenever
the oil is changed.
How to Reset the CHANGE ENG OIL Light
The GM Oil Life System
calculates when to change
your engine oil and filter based on vehicle use. Anytime
your oil is changed, reset the system so it can calculate
when the next oil change is required. If a situation
occurs where you change your oil prior to a CHANGE
ENG OIL light being turned on, reset the system.
To reset the CHANGE ENG OIL light, do
the following:
1. Turn the ignition key to RUN with the engine off.
2. Fully press and release the accelerator pedal
three times within five seconds.
If the CHANGE ENG OIL light flashes for
five seconds, the system is reset. If the light does not
flash, repeat the procedure.What to Do with Used Oil
Did you know that used engine oil contains certain
elements that may be unhealthy for your skin and could
even cause cancer? Don't let used oil stay on your skin
for very long. Clean your skin and nails with soap and
water, or a good hand cleaner. Wash or properly throw
away clothing or rags containing used engine oil. See
the manufacturer's warnings about the use and disposal
of oil products.
Used oil can be a real threat to the environment. If you
change your own oil, be sure to drain all free
-flowing oil
from the filter before disposal. Don't ever dispose of oil
by putting it in the trash, pouring it on the ground, into
sewers, or into streams or bodies of water. Instead,
recycle it by taking it to a place that collects used oil. If
you have a problem properly disposing of your used oil,
ask your dealer, a service station or a local recycling
center for help.

Power Steering Fluid
The power steering
fluid reservoir is located
in the engine compartment
on the passenger's side of
the vehicle.
When to Check Power Steering Fluid
It is not necessary to regularly check power steering
fluid unless you suspect there is a leak in the system or
you hear an unusual noise. A fluid loss in this system
could indicate a problem. Have the system inspected and
repaired. See ªEngine Compartment Overviewº in the
Index for reservoir location.
How to Check Power Steering Fluid
Turn the key off, let the engine compartment cool down,
wipe the cap and the top of the reservoir clean, then
unscrew the cap and wipe the dipstick with a clean rag.
Replace the cap and completely tighten it. Then remove
the cap again and look at the fluid level on the dipstick.
The level should be at the C (cold) mark. If necessary,
add only enough fluid to bring the level up to the mark.

Always use the proper fluid. Failure to use the proper
fluid can cause leaks and damage hoses and seals.
