DESCRIPTION
The inner and outer joints of both half shaft
assemblies are tripod joints. The tripod joints are
true constant velocity (CV) joint assemblies, which
allow for the changes in half shaft length through
the jounce and rebound travel of the rear suspension.
On vehicles equipped with ABS brakes, the outer
CV joint is equipped with a tone wheel used to deter-
mine vehicle speed for ABS brake operation.
The inner tripod joint of both half shafts is bolted
rear differential assembly's output flanges. The outer
CV joint has a stub shaft that is splined into the
wheel hub and retained by a steel hub nut.
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - HALF SHAFT
VEHICLE INSPECTION
(1) Check for grease in the vicinity of the inboard
tripod joint and outboard CV joint; this is a sign of
inner or outer joint seal boot or seal boot clamp dam-
age.
NOISE AND/OR VIBRATION IN TURNS
A clicking noise and/or a vibration in turns could
be caused by one of the following conditions:
²Damaged outer CV or inner tripod joint seal
boot or seal boot clamps. This will result in the loss
and/or contamination of the joint grease, resulting in
inadequate lubrication of the joint.²Noise may also be caused by another component
of the vehicle coming in contact with the half shafts.
CLUNKING NOISE DURING ACCELERATION
This noise may be a result of one of the following
conditions:
²A torn seal boot on the inner or outer joint of the
half shaft assembly.
²A loose or missing clamp on the inner or outer
joint of the half shaft assembly.
²A damaged or worn half shaft CV joint.
SHUDDER OR VIBRATION DURING ACCELERATION
This problem could be a result of:
²A worn or damaged half shaft inner tripod joint.
²A sticking tripod joint spider assembly (inner tri-
pod joint only).
²Improper wheel alignment. (Refer to 2 - SUS-
PENSION/WHEEL ALIGNMENT - STANDARD
PROCEDURE)
VIBRATION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS
This problem could be a result of:
²Foreign material (mud, etc.) packed on the back-
side of the wheel(s).
²Out of balance tires or wheels. (Refer to 22 -
TIRES/WHEELS - STANDARD PROCEDURE)
²Improper tire and/or wheel runout. (Refer to 22 -
TIRES/WHEELS - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING)

(13) Remove the park brake actuator (Fig. 37)
from the leading brake shoe and transfer to the
replacement brake shoe.
INSPECTION - REAR DRUM BRAKE SHOE
LINING
(1) Remove the tire and wheel assembly from the
vehicle
(2) Remove the rear brake adjusting hole plug
found in the brake support.
(3) Insert a thin screwdriver into brake adjusting
hole to hold the adjusting lever away from the
notches on the adjusting screw star wheel.
(4) Insert Tool C-3784 into brake adjusting hole
and engage notches of brake adjusting screw star
wheel. Release brake by prying down with adjusting
tool.
(5) Remove the rear brake drum from the rear hub
and bearing assembly. (Refer to 5 - BRAKES/HY-
DRAULIC/MECHANICAL/DRUM - REMOVAL)
(6) Inspect brake lining for wear, shoe alignment,
and or contamination from grease or brake fluid.
INSTALLATION - REAR DRUM BRAKE SHOES
(1) Lubricate the eight shoe contact areas on the
support plate and anchor, (Fig. 38) using the
required special MopartBrake Lubricant or equiva-
lent.
(2) Install leading brake shoe on brake support
plate. Install the leading brake shoe hold down
spring and pin (Fig. 36) on the brake shoe.
(3) Install the park brake actuator strut (Fig. 39)
on the leading brake shoe. Then install the park
brake actuator lever on the strut (Fig. 39).(4) Install the automatic adjuster screw on the
leading brake shoe. Then install the trailing brake
shoe on the park brake actuating lever and park
brake actuating strut (Fig. 35). Position trailing
brake shoe on brake support plate.
(5) Install the brake shoe hold down pin and
spring on the trailing brake shoe (Fig. 34).
(6) Install the brake shoe to brake shoe upper
return spring (Fig. 33).

(2) Install wheel speed sensor head into rear of
hub and bearing aligning index tab with the notch in
the top of the mounting hole. Push the sensor in
until it snaps into place on the metal retaining clip.
(3) Install secondary (yellow) retaining clip over
wheel speed sensor head and engage the tabs on each
side.
(4) Route sensor cable under leaf spring along rear
of axle. Install speed sensor cable into routing clips
on rear brake flex hose (Fig. 3).
(5) Install cable into metal routing clip and attach
it to the rear axle with mounting bolt (Fig. 3).
Tighten mounting bolt to 16 N´m (140 in. lbs.).
(6) Connect wheel speed sensor cable to vehicle
wiring harness (Fig. 2).Be sure speed sensor
cable connector is fully seated and locked into
vehicle wiring harness connector.
(7) Install speed sensor cable grommet into hole in
floor pan making sure grommet is fully seated into
hole.
(8) Lower vehicle.
(9) Road test vehicle to ensure proper operation of
the base and ABS braking systems.
TONE WHEEL
INSPECTION - TONE WHEEL
NOTE: Rear tone wheels for front-wheel-drive vehi-
cles are sealed within the hub and bearing assem-
bly and cannot be inspected or replaced.
Replacement of the hub and bearing is necessary.Tone wheels can cause erratic wheel speed sensor
signals. Inspect tone wheels for the following possible
causes.
²missing, chipped, or broken teeth
²contact with the wheel speed sensor
²wheel speed sensor to tone wheel alignment
²wheel speed sensor to tone wheel clearance
²excessive tone wheel runout
²tone wheel loose on its mounting surface
If a front tone wheel is found to need replacement,
the drive shaft must be replaced. No attempt should
be made to replace just the tone wheel. (Refer to 3 -
DIFFERENTIAL & DRIVELINE/HALF SHAFT -
REMOVAL)
If a rear tone wheel is found to need replacement
on an all-wheel-drive model, the drive shaft must be
replaced. No attempt should be made to replace just
the tone wheel. (Refer to 3 - DIFFERENTIAL &
DRIVELINE/HALF SHAFT - REMOVAL)
If wheel speed sensor to tone wheel contact is evi-
dent, determine the cause and correct it before
replacing the wheel speed sensor or tone wheel.
Check the gap between the speed sensor head and
the tone wheel to ensure it is within specifications.
(Refer to 5 - BRAKES - ABS/ELECTRICAL - SPEC-
IFICATIONS)
Excessive wheel speed sensor runout can cause
erratic wheel speed sensor signals. Refer to SPECI-
FICATIONS in this section of the service manual for
the maximum allowed tone wheel runout (Refer to 5 -
BRAKES - ABS/ELECTRICAL - SPECIFICATIONS).
If tone wheel runout is excessive, determine if it is
caused by a defect in the driveshaft assembly or hub
and bearing. Replace as necessary.
Tone wheels are pressed onto their mounting sur-
faces and should not rotate independently from the
mounting surface. Replacement of the front drive-
shaft, rear driveshaft (AWD only) or rear hub and
bearing is necessary.
TRACTION CONTROL SWITCH
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - TRACTION
CONTROL SWITCH
(1) Remove lower column shroud.
(2) Disconnect traction control switch harness from
column harness below column.
(3) Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity read-
ing between pins. Refer to TRACTION CONTROL
SWITCH CONTINUITY test table and (Fig. 5).

DESCRIPTION
CLUTCH COMPONENTS
Models equipped with a 2.4L Gas engine utilize a
modular clutch assembly (Fig. 1). The modular clutch
consists of a single, dry-type clutch disc, a diaphragm
style clutch cover, and an integrated flywheel. The
clutch cover (pressure plate) is riveted to the fly-
wheel, and therefore can only be serviced as an
assembly.
Models equipped with the 2.5L Turbo Diesel engine
utilize a conventional clutch system (Fig. 2). This
system consists of a flywheel, clutch disc, and clutch
cover (pressure plate), which is fastened to the fly-
wheel, capturing the clutch disc within. Each compo-
nent is individually serviceable, however it ishighly
recommended that the clutch cover and disc be
replaced as a set.

MISALIGNMENT
Common causes of misalignment are:
²Heat warping
²Mounting drive plate on a dirty crankshaft
flange
²Incorrect bolt tightening
²Improper seating on the crankshaft shoulder²Loose crankshaft bolts
Clean the crankshaft flange before mounting the
drive plate. Dirt and grease on the flange surface
may misalign the flywheel, causing excessive runout.
Use new bolts when mounting drive plate to crank-
shaft. Tighten drive plate bolts to specified torque
only. Over-tightening can distort the drive plate hub
causing excessive runout.

PLATE - 2.5L TD
REMOVAL
(1) Remove transaxle assembly. (Refer to 21 -
TRANSMISSION/TRANSAXLE/MANUAL -
REMOVAL)
(2) Remove six (6) clutch pressure plate-to-fly-
wheel bolts. Remove pressure plate and disc from fly-
wheel (Fig. 21).
(3) Inspect flywheel. Resurface/replace as neces-
sary.
(4) Inspect clutch release bearing and lever.
Replace as necessary. (Refer to 6 - CLUTCH/
CLUTCH RELEASE BEARING - REMOVAL)
INSTALLATION
(1) Install clutch release bearing and lever (if
removed). (Refer to 6 - CLUTCH/CLUTCH RELEASE
BEARING - INSTALLATION)
(2) Install clutch disc and pressure plate to fly-
wheel (Fig. 21). Install clutch alignment tool, and
install and torque pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts to
28 N´m (250 in. lbs.).
(3) Install transaxle assembly. (Refer to 21 -
TRANSMISSION/TRANSAXLE/MANUAL - INSTAL-
LATION)

FRONT WASHER PUMP
MOTOR
REMOVAL
(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative
cable.
(2) Remove the engine fresh air housing inside the
engine compartment (Refer to 9 - ENGINE/AIR
INTAKE SYSTEM/AIR CLEANER HOUSING -
REMOVAL).
(3) Disconnect the washer hose at the in-line con-
nector forward of the cowl grille so that the in-line
connector remains with the washer hose from the
fresh air plenum.
(4) Disconnect the washer hose from the hose clip
located on the front fender side shield.
(5) Remove the filler tube screw.
(6) Hoist and support vehicle on hoist or jack
stands.
(7) Remove the right front wheel and tire assembly
(Refer to 22 - TIRES/WHEELS - REMOVAL).
(8) Disconnect the left right front wheelhouse
splash shield and move aside (Refer to 23 - BODY/
EXTERIOR/WHEELHOUSE SPLASH SHIELD -
REMOVAL).
(9) Drain washer fluid from the reservoir and into
a suitable clean container. This can be done by dis-
connecting the windshield washer hose from the
front (outboard) washer pump and allowing the
washer fluid to drain into a container through a tem-
porary jumper hose connected to the front washer
pump.
(10) Disconnect the electrical body harness connec-
tors to the washer pump motors and the fluid level
sensor. Slide the red lock on the connector to the
release position, then, depress the black tab and pull
the connector off the pump or sensor.
(11) Remove the two reservoir mounting screws.
(12) Disconnect the reservoir from the body mount
by raising the reservoir upward slightly and then
down so that the reservoir filler neck and front
washer hose pull through the opening in the front
fender side shield.
(13) Remove pump from reservoir by pulling pump
upper retention tab away from reservoir cavity and
then lifting pump up from mounting grommet. Do
not damage reservoir/pump sealing surface or punc-
ture reservoir during removal.
(14) Remove pump grommet and discard.
INSTALLATION
(1) Use new grommet when installing a new pump
assembly.
(2) Assure pump upper retention tab is pressed
into reservoir slot and that pump is rotated flatagainst the reservoir and that pump connector is fac-
ing up in the fully seated position. Assure the pump
is aligned to and fully seated in the reservoir cavity.
(3) Push filler neck and front washer hose through
the opening in the front fender side shield. Connect
the reservoir to the body mount by lowering the res-
ervoir down.
(4) Install the two reservoir mounting screws.
Torque screws to 8.5 - 11.3 N´m (75 - 100 in. lbs.).
(5) Connect the electrical body harness connectors
to the washer pump motors and the fluid level sen-
sor. Slide the red lock on the connector to the closed
or locked position.
(6) Assure that washer hose is properly routed to
prevent pinching and possible inoperative washers.
(7) Connect the left right front wheelhouse splash
shield and move aside (Refer to 23 - BODY/EXTERI-
OR/WHEELHOUSE SPLASH SHIELD - INSTALLA-
TION).
(8) Install the right front wheel and tire assembly
(Refer to 22 - TIRES/WHEELS - INSTALLATION).
(9) lower vehicle from hoist or jack stands.
(10) Install the filler tube screw. Torque screw to
8.5 - 11.3 N´m (75 - 100 in. lbs.).
(11) Connect the washer hose to the hose clip
located on the front fender side shield.
(12) Connect the washer hose at the in-line con-
nector forward of the cowl grille.
(13) Install the engine fresh air housing inside the
engine compartment (Refer to 9 - ENGINE/AIR
INTAKE SYSTEM/AIR CLEANER HOUSING -
INSTALLATION).
(14) Connect the battery negative cable.
(15) Verify system operation.
FRONT WIPER ARMS
STANDARD PROCEDURE - FRONT WIPER ARM
ALIGNMENT
(1) Verify wiper blade element condition and wiper
arm spring tension. Run wipers in low speed mode
while applying water to the windshield. Observe the
wiper blade that is chattering or skipping across the
windshield. If the wiper element is not rolling over
when the wiper direction reverses, align the wiper
arm. The extension bar portion of the wiper arm
must be twisted in the proper direction to allow the
wiper element to roll over when the direction
reverses.
(2) Place two small adjustable wrenches placed 50
mm (2 in.) apart on the wiper arm extension rod.
(3) Twist the extension rod slightly in the opposite
direction that the element is laying on the wind-
shield while holding the wrench closest to the pivot
stationary.

WARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AIR-

SEAT OR INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPONENT DIAG-
NOSIS OR SERVICE. FAILURE TO TAKE THE
PROPER PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN ACCI-
DENTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE
PERSONAL INJURY.
(1) Check the fused B(+) fuse in the Integrated
Power Module (IPM). If OK, go to Step 2. If not OK,
repair the shorted circuit or component as required
and replace the faulty fuse.
(2) Check for battery voltage at the fused B(+) fuse
in the IPM. If OK, go to Step 3. If not OK, repair the
open fused B(+) circuit to the IPM fuse as required.
(3)
Open the power outlet door. Check for continuity
between the inside circumference of the power outlet
receptacle and a good ground. There should be continu-
ity. If OK, go to Step 4. If not OK, go to Step 5.
(4) Check for battery voltage at the insulated con-
tact located at the back of the power outlet recepta-
cle. If not OK, go to Step 5.
(5) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative
cable. Remove the appropriate bezel. Check for conti-
nuity between the ground circuit cavity of the power
outlet wire harness connector and a good ground.
There should be continuity. If OK, go to Step 6. If not
OK, repair the open ground circuit to ground as
required.
(6) Connect the battery negative cable. Check for
battery voltage at the fused B(+) circuit cavity of the
power outlet wire harness connector. If OK, replace
the faulty power outlet receptacle. If not OK, repair
the open fused B(+) circuit to the IPM fuse as
required.
REMOVAL
(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative
cable.
(2) Look inside and note position of the retaining
bosses (Fig. 5).
(3) Using external snap ring pliers with 90 degree
tips. Insert pliers with tips against bosses and
squeeze forcing bosses out of base.
(4) Pull out the base through mounting ring by
gently rocking pliers. A tool can be made to do the
same. Refer to (Fig. 6).
(5) Disconnect the base wires.
(6) Set base aside. Remove light ring and discon-
nect wire.
INSTALLATION
(1) Position the mounting ring on the instrument
panel and feed the wires through the ring. Index the
cap and the mounting ring with the index tab at the9 o'clock position to the key in the instrument panel.
Install the ring.
(2) Connect the wires to the base. Orientate the
base alignment rib at the 11 o'clock position to mate
the groove in the mounting ring to the base.
(3) Push the base into the bezel until it locks in
place.
(4) Check operation of outlet or element and
install the 12 volt outlet cap.
