CAUTION:
Be sure no foreign material enters the crank-
case.
10. Warm up the engine for several minutes
at idle speed. Check for oil leakage while
warming up.
CAUTION:
If oil leakage is found, stop the engine immedi-
ately and check for the cause.

Oil pressure check
1. Put a cloth around the cylinder.
2. Slightly loosen the oil gallery bolt in the
cylinder head.
3. Start the engine and keep it idling until oil
begins to seep from the oil gallery. If no oil
comes out after one minute, turn the en-
gine off so it will not seize and find the
cause.
4. Start the engine, and then check the oil
pressure.
5. After checking, tighten the oil gallery bolt
to the specified torque.CAUTION:Be sure to check the oil pressure after replac-ing the engine oil. Tightening torque:

6. Inspect the element. If damaged, replace
it.
7. Apply SAE 10W30 motor oil to the ele-
ment.NOTE:The element should be wet but not dripping.
8. Apply all-purpose grease to the air filter
element seat.
9. Reinstall the element to the element
guide.
10. Reinstall the element assembly and parts
removed for access.NOTE:The air filter element should be cleaned every
20 ~ 40 hours. It should be cleaned and lubri-
cated more often if the machine is operated in
extremely dusty areas. Each time filter element
maintenance is performed, check the air inlet
to the filter case for obstructions. Check the air
cleaner rubber joint to the carburetor and man-
ifold fittings for an airtight seal. Tighten all fit-
tings securely to avoid the possibility ofunfiltered air entering the engine.

Cable inspection and lubrication
WARNING
Inspect cables frequently and replace if dam-
aged. Corrosion can result when the outer
covering of control cables becomes damaged.
Cables can also become frayed or kinked. Op-
eration of controls could be restricted, whichcould cause an accident or injury.
Lubricate the inner cables and the cable ends.
If the cables do not operate smoothly, ask a
Yamaha dealer to replace them.

B. STORAGE
Long term storage (60 days or more) of your
machine will require some preventive proce-
dures to guard against deterioration. After
thoroughly cleaning the machine, prepare for
storage as follows:
1. Fill the fuel tank with fresh fuel and add
fuel stabilizer (if available).
NOTE:
Use of fuel stabilizer eliminates the need to
drain the fuel system. Consult a Yamaha dealer
if the fuel system is to be drained instead.
2. Remove the spark plug, pour about one
tablespoon of SAE 10W30 or 20W40 mo-
tor oil in the spark plug hole and reinstall
the spark plug. Ground the spark plug
wire and turn the engine over several
times to coat the cylinder wall with oil.
3. Clean the drive chain thoroughly and lu-
bricate it. (See page 8-61.)
4. Lubricate all control cables.

CAUTION
:
Be sure to use motor oils that do not contain anti-
friction modifiers. Passenger car motor oils (often
labeled “Energy Conserving”) contain anti-friction
additives which will cause clutch and/or starter
clutch slippage, resulting in reduced componentlife and poor engine performance.
