To equalize tire wear and help ex-
tend tire life, Toyota recommends
that you rotate your tires accord-
ing to the maintenance schedule.
(For scheduled maintenance infor-
mation, please refer to the Sched-
uled Maintenance Guideº or Own-
er's Manual Supplementº.)
However, the most appropriate tim-
ing for tire rotation may vary ac-
cording to your driving habits and
road surface conditions.
See If you have a flat tireº on page
337 in Section 4 for tire change proce-
dure.When rotating tires, check for uneven
wear and damage. Abnormal wear is
usually caused by incorrect tire pres-
sure, improper wheel alignment, out-
of- balance wheels, or severe braking.
Initial adjustment of the tire pres-
sure warning system is necessary
after you have rotated your tires.
See Tire pressure warning sys-
temº on page 161 in Section 1- 7.
WHEN TO USE SNOW TIRES OR
CHAINS
Snow tires or chains are recommended
when driving on snow or ice.
On wet or dry roads, conventional tires
provide better traction than snow tires.
SNOW TIRE SELECTION
If you need snow tires, select tires of
the same size, construction and load
capacity as the originally installed tires.
Also, on four- wheel drive models, all
the tires must be the same brand and
have the same tread patterns.
Do not use tires other than those men-
tioned above. Do not install studded tires
without first checking local regulations for
possible restrictions.
CAUTION
Observe the following instructions.
Otherwise, an accident may occur re-
sulting in death or serious injuries.

Do not use snow tires other than
the manufacturer 's recommended si-
ze, as this may cause dangerous
handling characteristics resulting in
loss of control.

READINESS MONITOR DRIVE PATTERN
1. PURPOSE OF THE READINESS TESTS

The On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system is designed to monitor the performance of emission-re-
lated components, and report any detected abnormalities with Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
Since various components need to be monitored during different driving conditions, the OBD II system
runs separate monitoring programs called readiness monitors.

The hand-held tester's software must be version 9.0 or newer to view the readiness monitor status.
From the ºENHANCED OBD IIº menu, select ºMONITOR STATUSº to view the readiness monitor sta-
tus.

A generic OBD II scan tool can also be used to view the readiness monitor status.

When the readiness monitor status reads ºcompleteº, the necessary conditions have been met for run-
ning performance tests for that readiness monitor.
HINT:
Many state Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) programs require a vehicle's readiness monitor status to show
ºcompleteº.

The readiness monitor will be reset to ºincompleteº if:

The ECM has lost battery power or blown a fuse.

DTCs have been cleared.

The conditions for running the readiness monitor have not been met.

If the readiness monitor status shows ºincompleteº, follow the appropriate readiness monitor drive pat-
tern to change the status to ºcompleteº.
CAUTION:
Strictly observe posted speed limits, traffic laws, and road conditions when performing these drive
patterns.
NOTICE:
The following drive patterns are the fastest method of completing all the requirements necessary for
making the readiness monitor status read ºcompleteº.
If forced to momentarily stop a drive pattern due to traffic or other factors, the drive pattern can be
resumed. Upon completion of the drive pattern, in most cases, the readiness monitor status will
change to ºcompleteº.
Sudden changes in vehicle load and speed, such as driving up and down hills and/or sudden accel-
eration, hinder readiness monitor completion.

6. MAINTENANCE
Tape Player/Head Cleaning:
(a) Raise the cassette door with your finger.
Using a pencil or similar object, push in the guide.
(b) Using a cleaning pen or cotton applicator soaked in clean-
er, clean the head surface, pinch rollers and capstans.
7. MAINTENANCE
CD Player/Disc Cleaning:
If the disc gets dirty, clean the disc by wiping the surface from
the center to outside in the radial directions with a soft cloth.
NOTICE:
Do not use a conventional record cleaner or anti-static pre-
servative.
8. AVC-LAN Description
(a) What is AVC-LAN?
AVC-LAN, an abbreviation for ºAudio Visual Communication Local Area Networkº, is a united standard
developed by the manufacturers in affiliation with Toyota Motor Corporation. This standard pertains
to audio and visual signals as well as switch and communication signals.
(b) Purpose:
Recently, car audio systems have rapidly developed and the functions vastly changed. The conven-
tional car audio system is being integrated with multi-media interfaces similar to those in navigation
systems. At the same time, customers are demanding higher quality from their audio systems. This
is merely an overview of the standardization background. The specific purposes are as follows.
(1) To solve sound problems, etc. caused by using components of different manufacturers through
signal standardization.
(2) To allow each manufacturer to concentrate on developing products they do best. From this, rea-
sonably priced products can be produced.
HINT:

If a +B or GND short is detected in the AVC-LAN circuit, communication is interrupted and the audio
system will stop functioning.

UNDER HOOD
GENERAL MAINTENANCE
1. GENERAL NOTES

Maintenance items may vary from country to country. Check the owner's manual supplement in which
the maintenance schedule is shown.

Every service item in the periodic maintenance schedule must be performed.

Periodic maintenance service must be performed according to whichever interval in the periodic main-
tenance schedule occurs first, the odometer reading (miles) or the time interval (months).

Maintenance service after the last period should be performed at the same interval as before unless
noted.

Failure to do even one of the items can cause the engine to run poorly and/or increase the exhaust
emissions.
2. WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID
(a) Check that there is sufficient fluid in the tank.
3. ENGINE COOLANT LEVEL
(a) Check that the coolant level is between the LEVEL lines on the see-through reservoir at normal tem-
perature (20°C (68°F)).
4. RADIATOR AND HOSES
(a) Check that the front of the radiator is clean and not blocked by leaves, dirt or bugs.
(b) Check the hoses for cracks, kinks, rot or loose connections.
5. BATTERY ELECTROLYTE LEVEL
(a) Check the indicator.
(b) Check that the electrolyte level of all the battery cells is between the upper and lower level lines on
the case.
6. BRAKE FLUID LEVEL
(a) Check that the brake fluid levels are near the upper level line on the see-through reservoirs.
7. ENGINE DRIVE BELT
(a) Check the drive belt for fraying, cracks, wear or oiliness.
8. ENGINE OIL LEVEL
(a) Check the level on the dipstick with the engine turned off.
9. POWER STEERING FLUID LEVEL
(a) Check the level on the dipstick.
(b) The level should be in the ºHOTº or ºCOLDº range depending on the fluid temperature.
10. AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL
(a) Park the vehicle on a level surface.
(b) With the engine idling and the parking brake applied, shift the selector into all the positions from ºPº
to ºLº, and then shift into the ºPº position.
(c) Pull out the dipstick and wipe off the fluid with a clean shop rag. Re-insert the dipstick and check that
the fluid level is in the ºHOTº range.
(d) Perform this check with the fluid at the normal driving temperature (70 to 80°C, 158 to 176°F).
HINT:
Wait until the engine cools down (approx. 30 min.) before checking the fluid level after extended driving at
high speed, in hot weather, in heavy traffic or after pulling a trailer.
11. EXHAUST SYSTEM
(a) Visually inspect for cracks, holes or loose supports.
If any change in the sound of the exhaust or the smell of the exhaust fumes is noticed, locate and correct
the cause.
