tem should be performed only by an authorized SUBARU dealer.When the components of the SRS airbag system are replaced, useonly genuine SUBARU parts.

shown on the c ertific ation lab el attac hed to the d r iver’s d oor.
NOTE In the following cases, contact your SUBARU dealer as soon as pos- sible. The front part of the vehicle was involved in an accident in
which the SRS frontal airbags did not deploy. The pad section of the steering wheel or front passenger ’s
frontal airbag cover is scratched, cracked, or otherwise damaged.
In addition, if your vehicle is equipped with SRS side airbags, con-tact your SUBARU dealer as soon as possible in the followingcases. Either center pillar or a nearby area of the vehicle was involved
in an accident in which the SRS side airbag did not deploy. The fabric or leather of either front seatback is cut, frayed, or
otherwise damaged.
Precautions against vehicle modification
WARNING
To avoid accidental activation of the system or rendering the
system inoperative, which may result in serious injury, no modifi-cations should be made to any components or wiring of the SRSairbag system.This includes following modifications: Installation of custom steering wheels
Attachment of additional trim materials to the dashboard
Installation of custom seats (only for vehicles with SRS side
airbags)

Ignition switch
WARNING
Never turn the ignition switch to “LOCK” while the vehicle is be-
ing driven or towed because that will lock the steering wheel, pre- venting steering control. And when the engine is turned off, it
takes a much greater effort than usual to steer.
The ig nition switc h has four p ositions: LOCK, ACC, ON and START.

The key c an only b e inserted or removed in this p os ition. The ig nition
switc h will loc k the steering wheel when you remove the key.
If turning the key is d iffic ult, turn the steering wheel slig htly to the rig ht
and left as you turn the key.

mec hanism is switc hed to Front Wheel Drive for main tenanc e or similar
p urp oses. VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) operation indicator light (if equipped)
This lig ht c omes on when the ig nition switc h is ON and g oes out ab out 2
sec ond s later.
It b links when the VDC func tion is ac tivated . It il luminates when only the
TCS (trac tion c ontrol) func tion is op erating .
The VDC system is p rob ab ly faulty und er any of the following c ond itions.
Have your vehic le c hec ked at a SUBARU d ealer immed i ately.
The lig ht d oes not c ome on when the ig nition switc h is turned to the
“ ON ” p osition.
The lig ht d oes not g o out even after a p eriod of ab out 2 sec ond s after
the ig nition switc h has b een turned to the “ON ” p osition.
VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) OFF indicator light (if equipped)
This ind ic ator lig ht c omes on when the ig nition swi tc h is turned ON
and g oes out ab out 6 sec ond s after the eng ine has s tarted .
It c omes on when the VDC and TCS (trac tion c ontrol) func tions are
d eac tivated (in the stand b y state). NOTE It may take some time before the light goes out (the engine
warms up) after the engine has been started in cold weather. This does not indicate the existence of a problem. The light should goout as soon as the engine has warmed up.

Outside mirror defogger (if equipped) CAUTION
To prevent the battery from being discharged, do not operate the
defogger continuously for any longer than necessary.
The outsid e mirror d efog g er op erates only when the ig nition switc h is
in the “ON ” or “ACC ” p osition.

To turn on the outsid e mirror d efog g er, p ush the sw itc h while the en-
g ine is running .
The ind ic ator lig ht loc ated on the switc h will c ome on when the out-
sid e mirror d efog g er heater in op eration.
To turn it off, p ush the switc h ag ain.
Tilt steering wheel
WARNING
Do not adjust the steering wheel tilt position while driving. This
may cause loss of vehicle control and result in personal injury.

1. Ad just the seat p osition. Refer to the “Front seat ” sec tion (c hap ter 1).
2. Pull the tilt loc k lever d own.
3. Move the steering wheel to the d esired level.
4. Push the lever up to loc k the steering wheel in p lac e.
5. Make sure that the steering wheel is sec urely loc ked b y moving it up
and d own.
