Fuel filler flap The fuel filler flap is locked and
unlocked using the ignition key, whether the doors are locked or not. There is a holder for the fuel filler cap.Filling with fuel Switch off the engine.
A label on the inside of the flap shows which fuels are permitted andwhich are not allowed. The tank capacity is approximate-
ly 11 gallons (50 litres).Fuel supply cut-off switch
Should a serious collision occur, your vehicle is fitted with a system whichprevents fuel from reaching theengine.
To restore the supply, press the switch.

Control for rear window lock (child safety) This allows the rear windows to be locked in any position. NOTE:as a safety measure (children
on board), remove the ignition key when leaving the vehicle even for ashort time.
* According to specification.
ELECTRIC WINDOWS*
1 - DriverÕs electric window control
You have two options: Manual operation: Push or pull switch 1, lightly. The window stops when the
switch is released.Automatic operation: Push or pull switch 1firmly. Pressing once opens or
closes the window completely. Automatic opening and closing operate only when the engine is switched on.
2 - Passenger electric window control. Push or pull switch 2
.The window stops when the switch is released.

AUTOMATIC AUTOADAPTIVE GEARBOX Positions of the selector lever These positions are displayed on the instrument panel. P.
Park: use with the handbrake when parked.
R. Reverse: this must only be engaged when the vehicle is stationary and the engine idling.
N. Neutral: if Nis engaged by mistake while the car is moving, allow the engine
to return to idling speed before engaging a new forward gear.
D. Drive: in this position, the four gear ratios change automatically. The gearchange points vary depending on the programme selected.
3. Automatic changes of the first three gears only. Select this position when you notice frequent changes between third and fourth gear (town driving or on winding roads).
2 Automatic changes of the first two gears only. This position is particularly suitable for mountain roads, when going uphill (to make the best use of the engine's power) and downhill (engine braking).
1. Selection of first gear only.
For use on steep gradients, especially when towing a trailer.Selection of first gear is by pressing switch 1with the lever in position 2.
To exit position 1, press switch 1again or move the selector lever.
Starting
To start the engine, put the selector lever in
Nor P.
Press the brake pedal when starting the engine and in order to move the lever
from position P .

Any disruption of the system is signalled by theflashing of the Sport andSnow lights on the instru-ment panel. In such a case,
the gearbox will operate in down-
graded mode. You may feel a sub-stantial knock when reverse isselected from Pto R, or from Nto R
(without any risk of damage to thegearbox). Do not exceed 60 m.p.h. (100km/h). Contact a PEUGEOT dealer
without delay. When the engine is idling with the
car in gear, the car will move evenwithout you accelerating. Do not accelerate while a gear is being selected, when the vehicle is
stationary.
When stationary, have your foot on the
brake pedal when selecting a gear. Do not accelerate in gear with the brakes on. If work needs to be done with the engine running, apply the hand-brake and select position P.
Do not change down to brake onslippery roads. Never select position Nwhen the
vehicle is moving.Never engage Por Rif the vehicle
is not stationary. Do not allow children inside the vehicle unsupervised when theengine is running.
Operating programmes
You have a choice of three operating programmes:
- Auto-adaptive (normal).
- Sport.
- Snow.One press on button
Aor Bwill select
Sport or Snow respectively. The selec- tion is displayed on the instrumentpanel. Pressing the button a secondtime will return to the auto-adaptive(normal) programme. Auto-adaptive programme (normal) Gear changes are carried out on the basis of various parameters, such as:
- driving style,
- road characteristics,
- the vehicleÕs load. The gearbox continuously scans the
different programmes in the memoryand selects the one most suitable forthe driving conditions at any givenmoment. Sport programme The Sport programme favours perfor- mance for sporty driving and moredynamic acceleration. Snow Programme In position
Dthe Snow programme
provides smooth driving suited to slip- pery roads in order to improve trac-
tion and stability. Starting is in 2ndgear and changing down is at lowengine speeds. Special operating features During prolonged braking, the
gearbox changes down automatically,
so as to provide efficient enginebraking.
- If you take your foot off the accel- erator suddenly (when you are taken by surprise, for example), thegearbox will not change up, so as to
improve safety.
-When the engine is cold, thegearbox automatically selects aspecial programme which enablesthe engine to reach its ideal tem-perature more quickly to decrease pollution.
Kickdown For immediate maximum acceleration
without touching the gear lever, pressthe accelerator pedal down as far as
it will go. The gearbox will changedown automatically or stay in the gearselected, up to maximum enginespeed.

Handbrake Application When you have parked the vehicle, pull up the handbrake to apply it.
To ease application and release of the handbrake, press the brake pedal andpull up the handbrake with the enginerunning. Release Press the button before releasing the handbrake.
Manual gearbox The positions are indicated on the gear lever knob. Reverse gear can only be engaged from neutral when the vehicle is
stationary, with the engine idling.

THE ABS ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM* In conjunction with tyres in good con- dition and of an approved make, theABS system with electronic brakeforce distribution improves the stabil-ity and handling of your vehicle, par-ticularly on an uneven or slipperysurface. The anti-lock braking system comes into operation automatically whenthere is a risk of wheel lock.
In the event of emergency braking, press very firmly without reducingthe pressure. In some conditions the normal oper-
ation of the ABS may be felt asvibrations of the brake pedal.
* According to specification.
Power steering*
This is a comfort device which offers the best compromise for parking, andfor driving at high speeds.

CHECKING THE LEVELS Engine Checking the oil level Check the level regularly and top up between changes
(maximum
consumption is 0.5 litres per 600 miles (1,000 km). The oil level should be checked with the vehicle level, engine cold. There are two marks on the dipstick:
A= maximum.
B = minimum. Oil change:
according to the manu-
facturerÕs servicing schedule.
Ð Dipstick. Never fill past the maximum mark A.
Ð Oil level gauge on the instrument panel.
Viscosity selectionIn all cases, the oil selected must meet the manufacturer's require-ments. Oil filter Change the filter regularly in accor- dance with the maintenance schedule. Used oil Prevent used oil from coming into pro- longed contact with the skin. Do not dispose of used oil into drains or into the ground.
To maintain the reliability of engines and emission control systems, the useof additives in the engine oil is pro-hibited. Brake fluid reservoir
Ð The level should always be above
the DANGER mark on the reservoir.
Ð If the level drops substantially, contact a PEUGEOT dealer imme-
diately.
Fluid change
Ð must be carried out according to the manufacturerÕs schedule.
Ð use fluids approved by the manu- facturer, which fulfil DOT4 stan- dards.
Coolant reservoir Use the fluid approved by the manu-
facturer. When the engine is warm, the tem- perature of the coolant is controlledby the engine fan: because this fancan operate with the ignition keyremoved, and because the coolingsystem is pressurised, wait for at leastone hour after the engine has stoppedbefore carrying out any work.
If necessary, in a breakdown, slacken the cap to the first notch to release thepressure to prevent any risk of scald-ing. When the pressure has droppedremove the cap and top up the level.
