Do not attach accessories to the door trim or near either SRS
side airbags and do not place objects near the SRS side airbags. In the event of the SRS side airbag deployment, they could bepropelled dangerously toward the vehicle ’s occupants and cause
injuries. Do not put any kind of cover or clothes or other objects over
either front seatback and do not attach labels or stickers to thefront seat surface on or near the SRS side airbag. They could pre-vent proper deployment of the SRS side airbag, reducing protec-tion available to the front seat ’s occupant.

SRS sid e airb ag d ep loys ind ep end ently of the fronta l airb ag s in the
steering wheel and instrument p anel.
An imp ac t sensor is inc orp orated into eac h of the v ehic le’s c enter p il-
lars. If either sensor d etec ts a c ertain p red etermi ned amount of forc e
d uring a sid e imp ac t c ollision, the c ontrol mod ule send s a sig nal to
the sid e airb ag mod ule on the imp ac ted sid e of the vehic le, instruc t-
ing it to inflate the SRS sid e airb ag . Then the sid e airb ag mod ule p ro-
d uc es g as, whic h instantly inflates the SRS sid e ai rb ag . After the d e-
p loyment, the SRS sid e airb ag immed iately starts to d eflate. The time
req uired from d etec ting imp ac t to d eflating of the SRS sid e airb ag af-
ter d ep loyment is shorter than the b link of eye.
The SRS sid e airb ag d ep loys even when no one oc c up i es the seat on
the sid e of whic h an imp ac t is ap p lied .

A d iag nostic system c ontinually monitors the read in ess of the SRS air-
b ag system (inc lud ing front seatb elt p retensioners) while the vehic le is
b eing d riven. The SRS airb ag system warning lig ht “AIRBAG ” will show
normal system op eration b y lig hting for ab out 6 sec ond s when the ig ni-
tion key is turned to the “ON ” p osition.

In the event that the SRS airbag is deployed, replacement of the sys-
tem should be performed only by an authorized SUBARU dealer.When the components of the SRS airbag system are replaced, useonly genuine SUBARU parts.
To ensure their long -term reliab ility, the SRS airb
ag s must b e insp ec ted
b y a SUBARU d ealer ten years after the d ate of manu fac ture, whic h is
shown on the c ertific ation lab el attac hed to the d r iver’s d oor.
NOTE In the following cases, contact your SUBARU dealer as soon as pos- sible. The front part of the vehicle was involved in an accident in
which the SRS frontal airbags did not deploy. The pad section of the steering wheel or front passenger ’s
frontal airbag cover is scratched, cracked, or otherwise damaged.
In addition, if your vehicle is equipped with SRS side airbags, con-tact your SUBARU dealer as soon as possible in the followingcases. Either center pillar or a nearby area of the vehicle was involved
in an accident in which the SRS side airbag did not deploy. The fabric or leather of either front seatback is cut, frayed, or
otherwise damaged.
Precautions against vehicle modification
WARNING
To avoid accidental activation of the system or rendering the
system inoperative, which may result in serious injury, no modifi-cations should be made to any components or wiring of the SRSairbag system.This includes following modifications: Installation of custom steering wheels
Attachment of additional trim materials to the dashboard

then g o out when the ig nition switc h is initially t urned to the “ON ” p osi-
tion. This p ermits c hec king the op eration of the b u lb s.
Ap p ly the p arking b rake and turn the ig nition switc h to the “ON ” p osition.

If any lig hts fail to c ome on, it ind ic ates a b urne d -out b ulb or a malfunc -
tion of the c orresp ond ing system.

When the ig nition switc h is turned to the “ON ” p osition, the seatb elt
warning lig ht will c ome on and the remind er c hime w ill sound for ab out
six sec ond s to remind the d river to fasten the seat b elt.
The seatb elt warning lig ht remains on for ab out six sec ond s and turns off
automatic ally after six sec ond s.
The seatb elt remind er c hime will turn off when the d river’s sid e seatb elt is
b uc kled or it will turn off automatic ally after six sec ond s.
SRS airbag system warning light AIRBAG
When the ig nition switc h is turned to the “ON ” p osition, the SRS airb ag
system warning lig ht will c ome on for ab out six sec ond s and g o out. This
shows the SRS frontal airb ag and SRS sid e airb ag (i f eq uip p ed ) and
seatb elt p retensioners are in normal op eration.
If this lig ht c omes on while d riving or d oes not g o out after the eng ine
starts, it may ind ic ate that the SRS frontal airb ag system or SRS sid e air-

Do not use a combination of radial, belted bias or bias tires
since it may cause dangerous handling characteristics and lead to an accident.
Your vehic le is eq uip p ed with “all season tires ” whic h are d esig ned to
p rovid e an ad eq uate measure of trac tion, hand ling a nd b raking p erfor-
manc e in year-round d riving . In winter, it may b e p ossib le to enhanc e
p erformanc e throug h use of tires d esig ned sp ec ific a lly for winter d riving
c ond itions.
If you c hoose to install winter tires on your vehic le, b e sure to use the
c orrec t tire size and typ e. All four tires should b e of the same size,
c onstruc tion, b rand and load rang e and you should n ever mix rad ial,
b elted b ias or b ias tires sinc e this may result in d ang erous hand ling
c harac teristic s.
Rememb er to d rive with c are at all times reg ard less of the typ e of tires on
your vehic le.
Tire chains
CAUTION
Tire chains cannot be used on P205/55R16 tires for GT modelsand P225/60R16 tires for OUTBACK models because of lack of
clearance between the tires and body.
Driving on snowy g rad es or ic y road s may req uire th e use of tire c hains,
in whic h c ase p ut the c hains on the front wheels on ly. Use only SAE
c lass S typ e c hains that are of the c orrec t size fo r your tires so as not to
d amag e the vehic le b od y or susp ension.
When d riving with tire c hains, d rive at sp eed s b elo w 19 mp h (30 km/h).
When a temp orary sp are tire is on a front wheel, re p lac e the temp orary
sp are tire with the rear tire on the same sid e of t he vehic le, and then fit
c hains on the front tires.
Always use the utmost c are when d riving with tire c hains — overc onfi-
d enc e b ec ause you are d riving with tire c hains c oul d easily lead to a se-
rious ac c id ent.
