The c hild should also b e at least one year old . It is imp ortant to use a
rear-fac ing c hild restraint until the c hild is ab ou t a year old . A rear-fac ing
restraint g ives the c hild ’s head , nec k and b od y the sup p ort they would
need in a c ollision. See the “Child restraint systems ” sec tion in this
manual.
WARNING
Do not use the built-in child restraint for infants who require a rear-facing child restraint. In an accident, serious crippling injuryor death could result if the built-in restraint is used for the infant.
If the c hild exc eed s the maximum weig ht and heig ht c ap ac ities of the
b uilt-in c hild restraint (maximum weig ht of 18.09 k g (40 lb .) and maxi-
mum heig ht of 110 c m (44.3 in.)), d o not use the b u ilt-in c hild restraint.
The c hild should use either the vehic le ’s seatb elts or an ap p roved after-
market b ooster seat, if nec essary.
The b uilt-in c hild restraint system c onforms to Fed eral Motor Vehic le
Safety Stand ard No. 213 and Canad a Motor Vehic le Sa fety Stand ard No.
213.4.
Ac c ord ing to ac c id ent statistic s, c hild ren are safe r when p rop erly re-
strained in the rear seating p osition than in the f ront seating p osition.
Child ren ag ed 12 and und er should not sit in the fr ont seat of a c ar

WARNING
Make sure the child is securely restrained with the built-in
child restraint. Failure to follow the manufacturer ’s instructions on the use of
this child restraint system can result in your child striking the ve-
hicle’ s interior during a sudden stop or crash.

Placing a child in the built-in child restraint

WARNING
If you remove the removable pad for cleaning or other purposes,
do not use the built-in child restraint. If an accident occurs, the
absence of the pad can increase the risk or severity of injury tothe child.

11. Fasten the rig ht and left halves of the c hest c lip at the level of the
c hild ’s armp its. The c olor g reen must ap p ear in the ind ic ator wind ow
when fastened . If the c olor red ap p ears in the wind ow, the c lip is not
sec urely latc hed .
The p urp ose of the c lip is to keep the should er b el ts p ositioned c or-
rec tly on the should ers.
WARNING
An unfastened chest clip will not help keep the belts on the
child’ s shoulders. In a sudden stop or in an accident, the child
may go too far forward and be seriously injured. Make sure thechest clip is fastened at all times.
12. If the b elts are loose, p ull d own on lap p arts of the b elts to take in
the slac k of the lap and should er b elts.
13. Pull the b elts toward you to make sure the b elt b uc kle is p rop erly
fastened and the retrac tor is loc ked .
14. If the b elts b ec ome too tig ht, unb uc kle the b uc kle and allow b oth
b elts to fully retrac t to unloc k the retrac tor, the n reinsert b oth tong ue
p lates.
