The warning lig ht c omes on when the ig nition switc h is turned to the
“ ON ” p osition, b ut it d oes not g o out even when the veh ic le sp eed
exc eed s ap p roximately 8 mp h (12 km/h). The warning lig ht c omes on d uring d riving .
When the warning lig ht is on, the ABS func tion shut s d own; however, the
c onventional b rake system c ontinues to op erate norm ally. If this oc c urs,
have the ABS system rep aired at the first availab le op p ortunity b y your
SUBARU d ealer. NOTE
If the warning light behavior is as shown below, the ABS system may be considered normal. The warning light comes on right after the engine is started but
goes out immediately, remaining off. The warning light remains on after the engine has been started,
but it goes out when the vehicle speed reaches about 8 mph (12km/h). The warning light comes on during driving, but it goes out
immediately and remains off.When driving with an insufficient battery voltage such as when theengine is jump started, the ABS warning light may come on. This isdue to the low battery voltage and does not indicate a malfunction.When the battery becomes fully charged, the light will go out. AT OIL TEMPerature warning light
(for AT vehicles)
If this lig ht c omes on when the eng ine is running , it may ind ic ate that the
automatic transmission fluid temp erature is too hot .
If the lig ht c omes on while d riving , it is unnec ess ary to stop the vehic le,
b ut avoid d riving up steep g rad es or in stop and g o traffic .
Automatic transmission control system warning
If the lig ht flashes after the eng ine starts, it ma y ind ic ate that the auto-
matic transmission c ontrol system is not working p r op erly. Contac t
your nearest SUBARU d ealer for servic e immed iately.

minutes to allow outsid e air to c irc ulate into the heated interior. This re-
sults in q uic ker c ooling b y the air c ond itioner. Ke ep the wind ows
c losed d uring the op eration of the air c ond itioner for maximum c ooling
effic ienc y. Lubrication oil circulation in the refrigerant circuit
Op erate the air c ond itioner c omp ressor at a low eng ine sp eed (at id le
or low d riving sp eed s) a few minutes eac h month d ur ing the off-sea-
son to c irc ulate its oil. Checking air conditioning system before summer season
Chec k the air c ond itioner unit for refrig erant leak s, hose c ond itions,
and p rop er op eration eac h sp ring . This c hec k is b es t p erformed b y
your SUBARU d ealer. Cooling and dehumidifying in high humidity and low tempera- ture weather condition
Und er c ertain weather c ond itions (hig h relative hum id ity, low temp era-
tures, etc .) a small amount of water vap or emission from the air outlets
may b e notic ed d uring c ooling or d ehumid ifying . Thi s c ond ition is nor-
mal and d oes not ind ic ate any p rob lem with the air c ond itioning sys-
tem. Air conditioner compressor shut-off when engine is heavily loaded
To imp rove ac c eleration and g as mileag e, the air c o nd itioner c om-
p ressor is d esig ned to temp orarily shut off d uring air c ond itioner op -
eration whenever the ac c elerator is fully d ep ressed . Suc h as d uring
rap id ac c eleration or when d riving on a steep up g ra d e.
Refrigerant for your climate control system
Your air c ond itioner uses ozone friend ly refrig eran t HFC134a. There-
fore, the method of ad d ing , c hang ing or c hec king th e refrig erant is
d ifferent from the method for CFC12 (freon). Consul t your SUBARU

Accessory power socket Electrical power socket located on the left-lower part of theinstrument panel CAUTION
The electrical power socket located on the lower part of the instrument panel is designed to use only a SUBARU genuine cig-arette lighter plug. Do not use non-genuine cigarette lighter plugsor any “plug-in” type electrical accessories in the socket. Doing
so many cause a short-circuit and overheating, resulting in a fire.Refer to the “Cigarette lighter ” section in this chapter.
Accessory power socket in the luggage compartment and dualpower socket (if equipped)
CAUTION
Do not attempt to use a cigarette lighter in the accessory
socket or dual power socket. Do not place any foreign objects, especially metal ones such
as coins or aluminum foil, into the accessory socket or dualpower socket. That could cause a short circuit. Always put thecap on the accessory socket and dual power socket when it isnot in use. Use only electrical appliances which are designed for 12V DC
and which consume less than 120W. Overloading the accessory
socket or dual power socket can cause a short circuit. Do not usedouble adapters or more than one electrical appliance. If the plug on your electric appliance is either too loose or too
tight for the accessory socket or dual power socket, this canresult in a poor contact or cause the plug to get stuck. Only use
plugs that fit properly.

7-10NOTE Engine oil, engine coolant, brake fluid, washer fluid and other fluid
levels should be checked daily, weekly or at fuel stops.
Driving in foreign countries

Confirm the availab ility of the c orrec t fuel. (Refe r to Fuel Req uirement
sec tion in this c hap ter.) Comp ly with all reg ulations and req uirements of eac h c ountry.
Periodic inspections
To keep your vehic le in the b est c ond ition at all t imes, always have the
rec ommend ed maintenanc e servic es listed in the main tenanc e sc hed ule
in the “Warranty and Maintenanc e Booklet ” p erformed at the sp ec ified
time or mileag e intervals.
Ignition switch
WARNING
Never turn the ignition switch to “LOCK” while the vehicle is be-
ing driven or towed because that will lock the steering wheel, pre- venting steering control. And when the engine is turned off, it
takes a much greater effort than usual to steer.
The ig nition switc h has four p ositions: LOCK, ACC, ON and START.

Sec ure all c arg o c arried insid e the vehic le and mak e c ertain that it is
not p iled hig her than the seatb ac ks. During sud d en stop s or jolts, unse-
c ured c arg o c ould b e thrown around in the vehic le a nd c ause injury. Do
not p ile heavy load s on the roof. Those load s raise the vehic le’s c enter of
g ravity and make it more p rone to tip over. If you must roc k the vehic le to free it from sand o r mud , d ep ress the
ac c elerator p ed al slig htly and move the selec tor le ver b ac k and forth b e-
tween “D ” and “R ” rep eated ly. Do not rac e the eng ine. For the b est p os-
sib le trac tion, avoid sp inning the wheels when tryi ng to free the vehic le.
When the road surfac e is extremely slip p ery, you c a n ob tain b etter trac -
tion b y starting the vehic le with the transmission in 2nd than 1st (b oth for
MT and AT). Never eq uip your vehic le with tires larg er than tho se sp ec ified in this
manual. Freq uent d riving of an AWD vehic le und er hard -d rivi ng c ond itions suc h
as roug h road s or off road s will nec essitate more f req uent rep lac ement of
eng ine oil, b rake fluid and transmission oil than t hat sp ec ified in the main-
tenanc e sc hed ule d esc rib ed in the “Warranty and Maintenanc e Booklet ”.
Rememb er that d amag e d one to your Sub aru while op er ating it off-road
and not using c ommon sense p rec autions suc h as thos e listed ab ove is
not elig ib le for warranty c overag e.

Winter driving

Operation during cold weather
Carry some emerg enc y eq uip ment, suc h as tire c hains , a wind ow
sc rap er, a b ag of sand , flares, a small shovel, and jump er c ab les.
Chec k the b attery and c ab les. Cold temp eratures red uc e b attery c a-
p ac ity. The b attery must b e in g ood c ond ition to p r ovid e enoug h p ow-
er for c old winter starts.
Use an eng ine oil of p rop er g rad e and visc osity for c old weather.
Heavy summer oil will c ause hard er starting .
Keep the d oor loc ks from freezing b y sq uirting them with d eic er or
g lyc erin.
Forc ing a frozen d oor op en may d amag e or sep arate t he rub b er
weather strip s around the d oor. If the d oor is froz en, use hot water to
melt the ic e, and afterward s thoroug hly wip e the wa ter away.
Use a wind shield washer fluid that c ontains an anti freeze solution. Do
not use eng ine antifreeze or other sub stitutes b ec a use they may d am-
ag e the p aint of the vehic le. n Before driving your vehicle

b ec ause that c ould make the p ed als slip p ery and d an g erous.

stop towing the trailer and have rep airs p erformed immed iately b y the
nearest SUBARU d ealer. n Driving on grades
Before g oing d own a steep hill, slow d own and shift into low g ear
in ord er to utilize the eng ine b raking effec t and p revent overheating of
your vehic le ’s b rakes. Do not make sud d en d ownshifts.
When d riving up hill in hot weather, the air c ond iti oner may turn off
automatic ally to p rotec t the eng ine from overheatin g .
When d riving up hill in hot weather, p ay attention t o the water tem-
p erature g aug e need le (for all vehic les) and ATF OI L TEMP warning
lig ht (for AT vehic les) sinc e the eng ine and transm ission are relatively
p rone to overheating und er these c ond itions. If the water temp erature
g aug e need le ap p roac hes the OVERHEAT zone or the AT F OIL TEMP
warning lig ht illuminates, immed iately switc h off t he air c ond itioner
and stop the vehic le at the nearest safe p lac e. Ref er to “Eng ine over-
heat ” sec tion (c hap ter 8), and “Warning and ind ic ator lig hts ” sec tion
(c hap ter 3) in the owner ’s manual.
If your vehic le has a automatic transmission, avoid using the ac c el-
erator p ed al to stay stationary on an up hill slop e instead of using the
p arking b rake or foot b rake. That may c ause the tra nsmission fluid to
overheat. Also, if your vehic le is eq uip p ed with an automatic transmis-
sion, avoid d riving with the g ear selec tor lever in “ D ” when towing a
heavy trailer to p revent fluid overheating .

Hazard warning flasher

Day or nig ht, if your vehic le b ec omes a traffic haz
ard , use the hazard
warning flasher. Avoid stop p ing on the road . It is b est to safely p ull off
the road if a p rob lem oc c urs. The hazard warning fl asher c an b e ac ti-
vated reg ard less of the ig nition switc h p osition.
Turn on the hazard warning b y p ushing the hazard wa rning flasher
switc h. Turn it off b y p ushing the switc h ag ain. NOTE When the hazard warning flasher is on, the turn signals do not work.
Engine overheating
WARNING
Never attempt to remove the radiator cap until the engine has been shut off and has fully cooled down. When the engine is hot,the coolant is under pressure. Removing the cap while the engineis still hot could release a spray of boiling hot coolant, which
could burn you very seriously.
If the eng ine overheats, safely p ull off the road a nd stop the vehic le in a
safe p lac e.
