
for access to fuel rails and injectors.
CAUTION: Both fuel rails are serviced as an assembly. DO NOT attempt
to separate fuel rail from connecting fuel hose at rear of
each fuel rail. Connecting fuel hose does not use any form of
clamps on the hose. DO NOT use any clamps on connecting fuel
hose. When removing fuel rails with injectors, use care not
to bend connecting fuel hose.
4) Disconnect fuel line from fuel rail. See FUEL LINE AT FUEL
RAIL. Remove fuel rail bolts. Ensure area around injectors and intake
manifold is clean.
5) Using rocking motion, pull driver's side fuel rail with
injectors upward from intake manifold until injectors just clear
intake manifold. Repeat procedure on passenger's side fuel rail.
Remove fuel rails with injectors from intake manifold.
6) If removing injector from fuel rail, remove retaining clip
from fuel rail and injector. Retaining clip is located at top of
injector and fuel rail. Remove injector with "O" ring from fuel rail.
Installation
1) If installing injector on fuel rail, install NEW "O" ring
on injector. Coat "O" ring on injector with engine oil. Install
injector on fuel rail. Install retaining clip on injector and fuel
rail.
2) To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure
using NEW "O" ring at bottom of each injector. Coat "O" ring on
injector with engine oil before installing injectors and fuel rails.
3) Push passenger's side fuel rail and then driver's side
fuel rail downward until shoulder on each injector contacts the intake
manifold. Ensure all injectors are fully seated.
4) Tighten fuel rail bolts and throttle body bolts to
specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Install fuel line on fuel
rail using proper procedure. See FUEL LINE AT FUEL RAIL under FUEL
SYSTEM. Start engine and check for leaks.
Removal (Ram Pickup 8.0L)
1) Release fuel pressure from fuel system. See FUEL SYSTEM
PRESSURE RELEASE. Ensure negative battery cable is disconnected.
2) Remove throttle body from upper intake manifold. See
THROTTLE BODY. Remove ignition coils with mounting bracket for access
to fuel rails.
3) Upper intake manifold must be removed for servicing of
fuel rails and injectors. Remove generator-to-upper intake manifold
brace and A/C compressor-to-upper intake manifold brace. Remove
generator and A/C compressor if necessary for removal of upper intake
manifold.
4) Disconnect necessary vacuum lines and hoses for removal of
upper intake manifold. Remove bolts, upper intake manifold and gasket
from lower intake manifold.
5) Note electrical connector location on injectors for
installation reference. Disconnect electrical connectors at injectors.
Disconnect fuel line from fuel rail. See FUEL LINE AT FUEL RAIL.
6) Remove fuel rail bolts. Ensure area around injectors and
lower intake manifold is clean. Using rocking motion, pull driver's
side fuel rail with injectors upward from intake manifold until
injectors just clear intake manifold. Repeat procedure on passenger's
side fuel rail. Remove fuel rails with injectors from lower intake
manifold.
7) If removing injector from fuel rail, remove retaining clip
from fuel rail and injector. Retaining clip is located at top of
injector and fuel rail. Remove injector with "O" ring from fuel rail.

Installation
1) If installing injector on fuel rail, install NEW "O" ring
on injector. Coat "O" ring on injector with engine oil. Install
injector on fuel rail. Position injectors on fuel rails so electrical
connector on injector is facing toward passenger's side of the
vehicle. Install retaining clip on injector and fuel rail.
2) To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure
using NEW "O" ring at bottom of each injector. Coat "O" ring on
injector with engine oil before installing injectors and fuel rails.
3) Push passenger's side fuel rail and then driver's side
fuel rail downward until shoulder on each injector contacts the intake
manifold. Ensure all injectors are fully seated.
4) Tighten fuel rail bolts to specification. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS. Using NEW gasket, install upper intake manifold with
all bolts loosely installed. Tighten upper intake manifold bolts to
specification in sequence. See Fig. 39. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
5) Tighten throttle body nuts to specification. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS. Install fuel line on fuel rail using proper procedure.
See FUEL LINE AT FUEL RAIL. Start engine and check for leaks.

THROTTLE BODY
Removal & Installation (Dakota, Durango, Ram Pickup 3.9L,
5.2L & 5.9L, Ram Van & Ram Wagon)
On Ram Van and Ram Wagon, remove engine cover. On all models,
remove air inlet duct or air cleaner from throttle body. Disconnect
electrical connectors, control cables and vacuum hoses at throttle

body. Remove throttle body bolts, throttle body and gasket. To
install, reverse removal procedure using NEW gasket. Tighten throttle
body bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
Removal & Installation (Ram Pickup 8.0L)
1) Remove air cleaner cover. Remove air cleaner housing-to-
throttle body nuts and air cleaner housing from throttle body.
Disconnect electrical connectors, control cables and vacuum hoses at
throttle body. Remove throttle body nuts, throttle body and gasket
from upper intake manifold.
2) To install, reverse removal procedure using NEW gasket.
Tighten throttle body nuts and air cleaner housing-to-throttle body
nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
EMISSION SYSTEMS
EVAP CANISTER
Removal & Installation (Dakota & Durango)
1) EVAP canister is located on mounting bracket attached to
inside of driver's side frame rail, just in front of the fuel tank.
Raise and support vehicle.
2) Note location of vacuum hoses on EVAP canister for
installation reference. Disconnect vacuum hoses from EVAP canister.
Remove EVAP canister-to-mounting bracket nut and EVAP canister.
3) To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure the pins on
EVAP canister engage with grommets on mounting bracket. Tighten EVAP
canister-to-mounting bracket nut to specification. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS.
Removal & Installation (Ram Pickup)
1) Two EVAP canisters are used. EVAP canisters are located on
mounting bracket attached to outside of passenger's side frame rail,
just behind the cab.
2) Note location of vacuum hoses on EVAP canister for
installation reference. Disconnect vacuum hoses from EVAP canister.
Remove EVAP canister-to-mounting bracket nuts and EVAP canisters.
3) To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten EVAP
canister-to-mounting bracket nut to specification. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS.
Removal & Installation (Ram Van & Ram Wagon)
1) Two EVAP canisters are used. EVAP canisters are located on
mounting bracket under driver's side of vehicle, behind driver's side
door opening.
2) Remove nuts and EVAP canister mounting bracket from the
body. Slightly lower EVAP canisters. Note location of vacuum hoses on
EVAP canister for installation reference. Disconnect vacuum hoses from
EVAP canister. Remove EVAP canister-to-mounting bracket nuts and EVAP
canisters.
3) To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten EVAP
canister-to-mounting bracket nut to specification. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS. When installing mounting bracket, ensure locating tabs
at top of mounting bracket engage with openings on the body. Tighten
EVAP canister mounting bracket-to body nuts to specification. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
EVAP LEAK DETECTION PUMP
NOTE: EVAP leak detection pump may also be referred to as Leak
Detection Pump (LDP).

Removal (Dakota & Durango)
1) EVAP leak detection pump and EVAP leak detection pump
filter must be replaced as an assembly. EVAP leak detection pump is
located at driver's side of engine compartment, just below battery
tray. See Fig. 40. EVAP leak detection pump filter is attached to
outside of battery tray, just in front of power distribution center.
See Fig. 40 .
2) Remove battery. Disconnect hose from bottom of EVAP leak
detection pump filter that goes to EVAP leak detection pump. Remove
retaining clip and disconnect EVAP leak detection pump filter from
battery tray.
3) Disconnect wiring harness for battery temperature sensor
from bottom of battery tray. Power distribution center must be removed
for access to EVAP leak detection pump.
4) Remove power distribution center-to-fender retaining screw
at rear of power distribution center. Unsnap power distribution center
from battery tray. Carefully position power distribution center aside.
5) Remove battery tray. Disconnect electrical connector and
vacuum hoses at EVAP leak detection pump. Use care not to damage
vacuum hoses during removal. Remove retaining bolts and EVAP leak
detection pump.
NOTE: Vacuum hoses and hose to EVAP leak detection pump filter must
be properly installed on EVAP leak detection pump and all
hoses must be in good condition. If hoses are not properly
installed or are damaged, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)
will be set in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
Installation
1) Install EVAP leak detection pump on battery tray. Tighten
retaining bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
2) To install remaining components, reverse removal
procedure. Ensure vacuum hoses and hose to EVAP leak detection pump
filter are in good condition and properly installed on EVAP leak
detection pump.

leak detection pump. Use care not to damage vacuum hoses during
removal. Remove retaining bolts and EVAP leak detection pump.
NOTE: Vacuum hoses and hose to EVAP leak detection pump filter must
be properly installed on EVAP leak detection pump and all
hoses must be in good condition. If hoses are not properly
installed or are damaged, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)

filter. Tighten retaining bolts to specification. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS.

filter are in good condition and properly installed on EVAP leak
detection pump.
Removal (Ram Van & Ram Wagon)
1) EVAP leak detection pump and EVAP leak detection pump
filter must be replaced as an assembly. EVAP leak detection pump and
EVAP leak detection pump filter are located on mounting bracket at
driver's side of engine compartment, near the wheelwell. See Fig. 42.
2) Disconnect electrical connector and vacuum hoses at EVAP
purge solenoid. Use care not to damage vacuum hoses during removal.
Remove EVAP purge solenoid from mounting bracket. Disconnect
electrical connector and vacuum hoses at EVAP leak detection pump. Use
care not to damage vacuum hoses during removal.
3) Remove retaining bolts from mounting bracket. Remove
mounting bracket with EVAP leak detection pump and EVAP leak detection
pump filter as an assembly. Remove retaining bolts, EVAP leak
detection pump and EVAP leak detection pump filter from mounting
bracket.
NOTE: All vacuum hoses and hose to EVAP leak detection pump filter
must be properly installed on EVAP leak detection pump and
all hoses must be in good condition. If hoses are not
properly installed or are damaged, a Diagnostic Trouble Code
(DTC) will be set in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
Installation
1) Install EVAP leak detection and EVAP leak detection pump
filter on mounting bracket. Tighten retaining bolts to specification.
See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
2) To install remaining components, reverse removal
procedure. Ensure vacuum hoses and hose to EVAP leak detection pump
filter are in good condition and properly installed.

NOTE: EVAP purge solenoid may also be referred to as EVAP canister
purge solenoid, duty cycle solenoid or proportional purge
solenoid.
Removal & Installation (Dakota & Durango)
1) On Dakota 2.5L, EVAP purge solenoid is located on firewall
at passenger's side of engine compartment. See Fig. 43. On Dakota 3.
9L, 5.2L and 5.9L and Durango, EVAP purge solenoid is located at
driver's side of engine compartment, near brake booster. See Fig. 44.
2) On all models, disconnect electrical connector and vacuum
hoses at EVAP purge solenoid. Use care not to damage vacuum hoses
during removal. Remove retaining nuts and EVAP purge solenoid.
3) To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten retaining
nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Ensure vacuum hoses
are in good condition and properly installed.

gasoline engines on all engines except 3.3L flex-fuel models.
On 3.3L flex-fuel models, use Mopar Flex-Fuel 5W-30 engine oil
or an equivalent that meets Chrysler Standard MS-9214. Proper
engine oil MUST BE used to prevent engine damage. The 3.3L
flex-fuel model may be referred to as Flex-Fuel Vehicle (FFV)
model and is used in all vehicles except California emission
vehicles. Flex-fuel model may be also referred to as an E85
application and may be identified by label attached to inside of
gasoline filler door.
( 3) - Quantity includes heater and coolant recovery tank. Add 2 qts.
(1.9L) if equipped with rear heater.
( 4) - Add this amount of fluid. Start engine and shift transaxle
through all gears and back to Park. Add additional fluid to
bring fluid level to 1/8" below the ADD mark on dipstick.
Recheck fluid level with transaxle at normal operating
temperature. Adjust fluid level so fluid level is within the
HOT range dipstick.
( 5) - An overrunning clutch is bolted on front of rear differential,
between torque tube for drive shaft and rear differential.
Overrunning clutch contains a separate reservoir from rear
differential. Ensure fluids are checked at appropriate
component, as different types of fluids are used. Fluid capacity
is not available from manufacturer.
