Inspection
Park the vehicle on level ground, and turn ofl the
engine. Allow the oil a few minutes to drain back
into the oil pan so the dipstick will show the actual
tevet,
Make certain that the oil level indicated on the dip-
stick is between the upper and lower marks.
lf the level has dropped close to the lower mark,
add oil until it reaches the upper mark.
CAUTION: Insert the dipstick caretully to avoid
bending it.

Replace _thermostat if it as open at room temperature.
To test a closed thermostat:
Suspend the thermostat in a container of water as
shown.
Heat the water and check the temperature with a
thermometer. Check the temperature at which the
thermostat lirst opens and at full litt.
CAUTION: Do not let the ihermometer touch the
bottom of the hot container.
Measure the lilt height of the thermostat when it's
fully open.

How to Read Flowcharts
A flowchart is designed to be used from start to final repair. lt's like a map showing you the shone$ distance. But beware:if you go off the "map" anywhere but a "stop" symbol, you can easily get lost.

NOTE:
. The term "lntermittent Failure" is used in these chans. lt simply means a system may have had a failure, but it checksout OK at this time. lf the Malfunction lndicator Lamp (MlL) on the dash does not come on, check for poor connectionsor loose wires at all connectors related to the circuit that you are troubleshooting (see illustration below).. Most of the troubleshooting flowcharts have you reset the Engine Control Module (ECM) and try to duplicate theDiagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). lf the problem is intermittent and you can't duplicate the code, do not continue throughthe flowchart. To do so will only result in confusion and, possibly, a needlessly replaced ECM.. "Open" and "Short" are common electrical terms. An open is a break in a wire or at a connection. A short is an acci-dental connection of a wire to ground or to another wire. In simple electronics, this usually means something won,twork at all. In complex electronics (like ECM's), this can sometimes mean something works, but not the way rr s sup-posed 10.

The PGM-Fl system on this model is a sequential multiport fuel injection system.
Fuel lniector Timing and Duration
The ECM contains memories for the basic discharge durations at various engine speeds and manifold pressures. The
basic discharge duration, after being read out from the memory. is further modified by signals sent from various sensors
to obtain the final discharge duration.
ldle Air Control
ldle Ai. Control Valve (lAC Valve)
When the engine is cold, the Ay'C compressor is on. the transmission is in gear (Ay'T only)the brake pedal is depressed, the
P/S load is high, or the alternator is charging, the ECM controls current to the IAC Valve to maintain correct idle speed.

. The ECM contains memories for basic ignition timing atvarious engine speeds and manifold pressures, lgnitiontiming
is also adjusted for engine coolant temperature.

2. Fuel PumD Control
. When the ignition switch is initially turned on, the ECM supplies ground to the PGM-FI main relay that supplies
current to the fuel pump for two seconds to pressurize the fuel system.
. When the engine is running, the ECM supplies ground to the PGM-FI main relay that supplies current to the fuel
DUmO.
. When the engine is not running and the ignition is on. the ECM cuts ground to the PGM-FI main relay which cuts
