HEAT METHOD: When the problem seems to occur when the suspect area is heated. 2
NOTICE:
(1) Do not heat to more than 60 °C (140 °F). (Temperature
is limited not to damage the components.)
(2) Do not apply heat directly to parts in the ECU.
3 WATER SPRINKLING METHOD:
NOTICE:
(1) Never sprinkle water directly into the engine
compartment, but indirectly change the temperature and
humidity by applying water spray onto the radiator front
surface.
(2) Never apply water directly onto the electronic
components.
4 OTHER: When a malfunction seems to occur when electrical load is excessive. When the malfunction seems to occur on a rainy day or in a
high−humidity condition. Heat the component that is the likely cause of the malfunction
with a hair dryer or similar object. Check to see if the malfunction
occurs.
Sprinkle water onto the vehicle and check to see if the malfunc-
tion occurs.
Turn on all electrical loads including the heater blower, head
lights, rear window defogger, etc. and check to see if the mal-
function occurs.ON (Service hint)
If a vehicle is subject to water leakage, the leaked water may
contaminate the ECU. When testing a vehicle with a water leak-
age problem, special caution must be taken.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
1 Preparation.
PREPARATION:
(a) Turn ignition switch to LOCK.
(b) Disconnect center airbag sensor assembly connector.
(c) Turn ignition switch ON. But do not start engine.
(d) Measure voltage between terminal IG
2 or ACC on con-
nector wire harness side of center airbag sensor assem-
bly and body ground, and operate electric system (defog-
ger, wiper, headlight, heater blower, etc.).
Voltage: 6 V − 11.5 V at IG
2 and ACC
(e) Turn electric system switch OFF.
(f) Turn ignition switch to LOCK.
(g) Remove voltmeter and connect center airbag sensor as-
sembly connector.
2 Does SRS warning light turn off?
PREPARATION:
(a) Turn ignition switch to LOCK.
(b) Connect steering wheel pad connector.
(c) Connect center airbag sensor assembly connector.
(d) Turn ignition switch ON.
CHECK:
Operate electric system (defogger, wiper, headlight, heater
blower, etc.), and check that SRS warning light goes off.
NO Check for DTCs. If a DTC is output, perform trou-
bleshooting for DTC. If a normal code is output,
replace center airbag sensor assembly.
YES
From results of above inspection, malfunctioning part can now be considered normal. To make
sure of this, use simulation method to check.

ON−VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. CHECK BATTERY ELECTROLYTE LEVEL
Check the electrolyte quantity of each cell.
Maintenance−Free Battery:
If under the lower level, replace the battery (or add distilled wa-
ter if possible). Check the charging system.
Except Maintenance−Free Battery:
If under the lower level, add distilled water.
2. Except Maintenance−Free Battery:
CHECK BATTERY SPECIFIC GRAVITY
Check the specific gravity of each cell.
Standard specific gravity:
1.25 − 1.29 at 20°C (68°F)
If the specific gravity is less than specification, charge the bat-
tery.
3. Maintenance−Free Battery:
CHECK BATTERY VOLTAGE
(a) After having driven the vehicle and in the case that 20
minutes have not passed after having stopped the en-
gine, turn the ignition switch ON and turn on the electrical
system (headlight, blower motor, rear defogger etc.) for
60 seconds to remove the surface charge.
(b) Turn the ignition switch OFF and turn off the electrical sys-
tems.
(c) Measure the battery voltage between the negative (−)
and positive (+) terminals of the battery.
Standard voltage:
12.7 − 12.9 V at 20°C (68°F)
HINT:
Before measuring the voltage, turn the ignition switch
OFF and turn off the electrical systems (headlight, blower
motor, rear defogger etc.) for 60 seconds to remove the
surface charge.
If the vehicle has been running, wait 20 minutes or more
after the vehicle stops before measuring the battery volt-
age.
If the voltage is less than specification, charge the battery.
HINT:
Check the indicator as shown in illustration.

Do not perform tests with a high voltage insulation re-
sistance tester.
Never disconnect the battery while the engine is run-
ning.
