Parking on Hills
You really should not park your vehicle,
with a trailer attached, on a hill.
If
something goes wrong, your rig could
start to move. People can be injured,
and both your vehicle and the trailer
can be damaged.
But if you ever have to park your rig on
a hill, here’s how to do it:
1. Apply your regular brakes, but don’t
shift into
P (Park) yet.
2. Have someone place chocks under
the trailer wheels.
3. When the wheel chocks are in place,
release the regular brakes until the
chocks absorb the load.
4. Reapply the regular brakes. Then
apply your parking brake, and then
shift to
P (Park).
5. Release the regular brakes.
When You Are Ready to Leave After
Parking
on a Hill
1. Apply your regular brakes and hold
the pedal down while you:
Start your engine;
Shift into a gear; and
Release the parking brake.
2. Let up on the brake pedal.
3. Drive slowly until the trailer is clear
4. Stop and have someone pick up and
of
the chocks.
store the choclts.
Maintenance When Trailer Towing
Your vehicle will need service more
often when you’re pulling a trailer. See
the Maintenance Schedule for more on
this. Things that are especially
important in trailer operation
are
automatic transaxle fluid (don’t
overfill), engine oil, belts, cooling
system, and brake adjustment. Each
of
these is covered in this manual, and the
Index will help you find them quickly. If
you’re trailering, it’s a good idea to
review these sections before you start
your trip.
Check periodically to see that all hitch
nuts and bolts are tight.

Windshield Washer Fluid (CONT.)
NOTICE
When using concentrated washer
fluid, follow the manufacturer’s
instructions for adding water.
Don’t mix water with ready-to-
use washer fluid. Water can cause the solution to freeze and
damage your washer fluid tank
and other parts
of the washer
system. Also, water doesn’t clean
as well as washer fluic
allows for expansiok, which
could damage the tank if it i
completely full.
Don’t use radiator antifreeze in

Brake Master Cylinder
Your brake master cylinder is here. It is
filled with DOT-3 brake fluid.
Your vehicle is equipped with either
Standard Power Brakes or the Anti-
Lock Brake System.
There are only two reasons why the
brake fluid level in your master cylinder
might go down. The first is that the
brake fluid goes down to an acceptable
level during normal brake lining wear.
When new linings are put in, the fluid
level goes back up. The
other reason is that fluid is leaking
out of the brake system.
If it is, you
should have your brake system fixed, since a leak means that sooner or later
your brakes won’t work well, or won’t
work at all.
So, it isn’t a good idea to “top
off” your
brake fluid. Adding brake fluid won’t correct a leak. If you add fluid when
your linings are worn, then you’ll have
too much fluid when you get new bralce
linings. You should add (or remove)
brake fluid, as necessary, only when
work is done on the brake hydraulic
system.
ProCarManuals.com
LUU I lUlV
If you have too much bfake
L fluid, it can spill on the
engine. The fluid will burn
if the
engine is hot enough.
You or others
could be burned, and your vehicle
could be damaged. Add brake fluid
only when work is done on the
brake hydraulic system.
When your brake fluid falls to a low
level, your brake warning light will
come on. See the
Index under Brake
System Warning Light.
What to Add:
When you do need brake fluid, use only
DOT-3 brake fluid-such as Delco

Use new brake fluid from a sealed
container only.

Replacing Brake System Parts
The braking system on a modern
vehicle is complex. Its many parts have
to be of top quality and work well
together if the vehicle
is to have really
good braking. Vehicles
we design and
test have top-quality
GM brake parts in
them, as your Pontiac does when it is
new. When you replace parts
of your
braking system-for example, when
your brake linings wear down and you
have to have new ones put in-be sure
you get new genuine
GM replacement
parts. If you don’t, your brakes may no
longer work properly.
For example, if
someone puts in brake linings that are
wrong for your vehicle, the balance
between your front and rear brakes can
change, for the worse. The braking
performance you’ve come
to expect can
change in many other ways
if someone
puts in the wrong replacement brake
parts

WHAT TO DO
While parked, and with the parking brake set, try to turn the key to Lock in each shift lever
position.

With a manual transaxle, the key should turn to Lock only when the shift lever is in

R (Reverse).
On vehicles with a key release button,
try to turn the key to Lock without pressing the button.
The key should turn to
Lock only with the key button depressed. On all vehicles, the key
should come out
only in Lock.
A When you are doing this check, your vehicle could begin to move. You or others could be
a injured and property could be damaged. Make sure there is room in front of your vehicle
in case it begins to roll. Be ready to apply the regular brake at once should the vehicl\
e begin to

Park on a fairly steep hill, with the vehicle facing downhill. Keeping your foot
on the regular
brake, set
the parking brake.
To check the parking brake: With the engine running and transaxle in N (Neutral), slowly
remove foot pressure from the regular brake pedal.
Do this until the vehicle is held by the
parking brake only.
To check the P (Park) mechanism’s holding ability: Shift to P (Park). Then release all brakes.
At least every spring, use plain water to flush any corrosive materials from the underbody. Take
care to clean thoroughly any areas where mud and other debris can collect.

Maintenance Schedule
Section C: Periodic Maintenance Inspections
Listed below are inspections and services which should be performed at least twice a year (for instance, each spring and fall).
You should let your GM dealer's service department or other qualified service center do these jobs. Make sure any necessary
repairs are completed at once.

~~
WHAT SHOULD BE DONE
Inspect the front and rear suspension and steering system for damaged, loose or missing parts,
signs of wear,
or lack of lubrication. Inspect the power steering lines and hoses for proper
hookup, binding, leaks, cracks, chafing, etc. Clean and then in\
spect the drive axle boot seals for
damage, tears or leakage. Replace seals if necessary.
Inspect the complete exhaust system. Inspect the body near the exhaust system. Look for broken,
damaged, missing or out-of-position parts as well as open seams, holes, loose connections, or
other conditions which could cause a heat build-up
in the floor pan or could let exhaust fumes
into the vehicle. See the
Index under Engine Exhaust.
Inspect the throttle linkage for interference or binding, and for damaged or missing parts.
Replace parts as needed.
Inspect the complete system. Inspect brake lines and hoses for proper hooku\
p, binding, leaks,
cracks, chafing, etc. Inspect disc brake pads for wear and rotors for surface condition. Inspect
other brake parts, including calipers, parking brake, etc. Check parking brake adjustment. You
may need to have your brakes inspected more often if your driving habits or conditions result in
frequent braking.
Note: A low brake fluid level can indicate worn disc brake pads which may need to be serviced.
Also, if the brake system warning light stays on or comes on, something may be wrong with the
brake system. See the
Idex under Brake System Warning Light. If your vehicle is equipped with
anti-lock brakes and the anti-lock brake system warning light stays on, comes on or flashes,
something may be wrong with the anti-lock brake system. See the
Index under Anti-Lock Brake
System Warning Light.
