windshield effectively.
●If you turn “A/C” off, the windows may fog up more easily.
●The windows may fog up if the recir-culated air mode is used.
■When driving on dusty roads
Close all windows. If dust thrown up by the vehicle is still drawn into the vehicle after closing the windows, it is recom-
mended that the air intake mode be set to outside air mode and the fan speed to any setting except off.
■Outside/recirculated air mode
●Setting to the recirculated air mode temporarily is recommended in pre-
venting dirty air from entering the vehicle interior and helping to cool the vehicle when the outside air tempera-
ture is high.
●Outside/recirculated air mode may
automatically switch depending on the temperature setting or the inside tem-perature.
■Operation of the air conditioning
system in Eco drive mode
●In Eco drive mode, the air conditioning
system is controlled as follows to pri- oritize fuel efficiency:• Engine speed and compressor opera-
tion controlled to restrict heating/cool- ing capacity• Fan speed restricted when automatic
mode is selected
●To improve air conditioning perfor-
mance, perform the following opera- tions:• Adjust the fan speed

odors
●To let fresh air in, set the air condition-
ing system to the outside air mode.
●During use, various odors from inside
and outside the vehicle may enter into and accumulate in the air conditioning system. This may then cause odor to
be emitted from the vents.
●To reduce potential odors from occur-
ring: • It is recommended that the air condi-tioning system be set to outside air
mode prior to turning the vehicle off. • The start timing of the blower may be delayed for a short period of time
immediately after the air conditioning system is started in automatic mode.
●When parking, the system automati-cally switches to outside air mode to encourage better air circulation
throughout the vehicle, helping to reduce odors that occur when starting the vehicle.
■nanoe™ X system (if equipped)*1, 2
This vehicle incorporates a biocidal product.
Ionised air generated by a device incor- porated in the vehicle purifies the air in the cabin by suppressing bacteria.
Active substance: Free radicals gener- ated in situ from ambient air or water.
nanoe™ helps to provide purified air by
emitting electrically charged water parti- cles through the front vent on the pas-senger side (left-hand drive vehicles) or
driver side (right-hand drive vehicles).*3
●When the fan is turned on and
nanoe™ X on the option control screen is selected, the nanoe™ X system is activated.
●When the fan is operated in the follow-ing conditions, system performance
will be maximized. If the following con- ditions are not met, performance will be limited.
• Air conditioner vent opening blows to the upper body, blows to the lower body and feet or feet.

• When opening the front vent on the
passenger side (left-hand drive vehi- cles) or driver side (right-hand drive vehicles).
●When nanoe™ X is generated, a small amount of ozone is emitted and
may be faintly smelled in some situa- tions. However, this is approximately the same as the amount that already
exists in nature, such as in forests, and it has no affect on the human body.
●A slight noise may be heard during operation. This is not a malfunction.*1: “nanoe X” is a “nanoe” generator.
*2: nanoe™ and the nanoe™ mark are
trademarks of Panasonic Corpora-
tion.
*3: According to temperature and humid-
ity conditions, fan speed and direc-
tion of the air flow, the nanoe™
system may not operate at full capac-
ity.

WARNING
■To prevent the windshield from fogging up
Do not use the windshield defogger
switch during cool air operation in extremely humid weather. The differ-ence between the temperature of the
outside air and that of the windshield can cause the outer surface of the windshield to fog up, blocking your
vision.
■When the outside rear view mir-
ror defoggers are operating
Do not touch the outside rear view mirror surfaces, as they can become
very hot and burn you.
■nanoe™ X
Do not disassemble or repair the gen- erator because it contains high volt-
age parts. Contact any Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any repairer if the generator needs repair.
NOTICE
■To prevent 12-volt battery dis-charge
Do not leave the air conditioning sys-
tem on longer than necessary when the hybrid system is off.
■To prevent damage to the nanoe™ X
Do not insert anything into the front
center vent on the passenger side (left-hand drive vehicles) or driver side (right-hand drive vehicles) vent,
attach anything to it, or use sprays around the passenger side (left-hand drive vehicles) or driver side (right-
hand drive vehicles) vent. These things may cause the generator not to work properly.

6-1. Maintenance and care
6-1.Mainte nance a nd care
Working from top to bottom, lib-
erally apply water to the vehicle
body, wheel wells and underside
of the vehicle to remove any dirt
and dust.
Wash the vehicle body using a
sponge or soft cloth, such as a
chamois.
For hard-to-remove marks, use
car wash soap and rinse thor-
oughly with water.
Wipe away any water.
Wax the vehicle when the water-
proof coating deteriorates.
If water does not bead on a clean sur-
face, apply wax when the vehicle body
is cool.
■Automatic car washes
●Before washing the vehicle: • Fold the mirrors.
Start washing from the front of the vehi-
cle. Extend the mirrors before driving.
●Turn off the power back door (if equipped).
●Brushes used in automatic car washes may scratch the vehicle sur-
face, parts (wheel, etc.) and harm your vehicle’s paint.
●In certain automatic car washes, the
rear spoiler may interfere with
machine operation. This may prevent the vehicle from being cleaned prop-erly or result in damage to the rear
spoiler.
●When needed to keep the parking
brake off, do not open the driver door. If you open the door, the parking brake automatically locked.
■High pressure car washes
As water may enter the cabin, do not bring the nozzle tip near the gaps around the doors or perimeter of the
windows, or spray these areas continu- ously.
■When using a car wash (vehicles with a smart entry & start system)
If the door handle becomes wet while the electronic key is within the effective range, the door may lock and unlock
repeatedly. In that case, follow the fol- lowing correction procedures to wash the vehicle:
●Place the key in a position 2 m (6 ft.) or more separate from the vehicle
while the vehicle is being washed. (Take care to ensure that the key is not stolen.)
●Set the electronic key to battery-sav-ing mode to disable the smart entry &
start system. ( P.153)

●If recharging with the 12-volt battery installed on the vehicle, be sure to dis-connect the ground cable.
●Make sure the power switch on the charger is off when connecting and
disconnecting the charger cables to the 12-volt battery.
■After recharging/reconnecting the 12-volt battery (vehicles with a
smart entry & start system)
●Unlocking the doors using the smart
entry & start system may not be possi- ble immediately after reconnecting the 12-volt battery. If this happens, use
the wireless remote control or the mechanical key to lock/unlock the doors.
●Start the hybrid system with the power switch in ACC. The hybrid system
may not start with the power switch turned off. However, the hybrid sys-tem will operate normally from the
second attempt.
●The power switch mode is recorded
by the vehicle. If the 12-volt battery is reconnected, the vehicle will return the power switch mode to the status it
was in before the 12-volt battery was disconnected. Make sure to turn off the power before disconnecting the
12-volt battery. Take extra care when connecting the 12-volt battery if the power switch mode prior to discharge
is unknown.
