Remove the head restraint.
Installing position:Outer rear seat
Center rear seat
Latch the hook onto the anchor bracket.
Swing the seatback forward slightly. ( P. 142)
Latch the hook onto the anchor bracket.
Return the seatback.
Make sure the seatback is securely locked by pushing it forward and rear-
ward on the top.
Secure the child restraint system using the seat belt or the lo wer
anchors, and tighten t he top tether strap.
Make sure the top tether strap is securely latched.
Replace the head restraint.
Installing position:
Outer rear seat

If the head restraint interferes with
the top tether strap installation and
the head restraint can be removed
and stored the storage box.

For safety and security
■Laws and regulations pertaining to anchorages
The LATCH system conforms to FMVSS225 or CMVSS210.2.
Child restraint systems conforming to FMVSS213 or CMVSS213 specifica-
tions can be used.
This vehicle is designed to conform to the SAE J1819.
WARNING
■ When installing a booster seat
To prevent the belt from going into ALR lock mode, do not fully extend the
shoulder belt. ALR mode causes the belt to tighten only. This could cause
injury or discomfort to the child. ( P. 32)
■ When installing a child restraint system
Follow the directions given in the child restraint system insta llation manual
and fix the child restraint system securely in place.
If the child restraint system is not correctly fixed in place, the child or other
passengers may be seriously injured or even killed in the event of a sudden
braking or an accident.
● Vehicles with rear seats: If the driver’s
seat interferes with the child restraint
system and prevents it from being
attached correctly, attach the child
restraint system to the right-hand rear
seat.
● Vehicles with rear seats: Adjust the front
passenger seat so that it does not inter-
fere with the child restraint system.
● Only put a forward-facing child restraint
system on the front seat when unavoid-
able. When installing a forward-facing
child restraint system on the front pas-
senger seat, move the seat as far back
as possible even if the “AIR BAG OFF”
indicator light is illuminated. Failure to
do so may result in death or serious
injury if the airbags deploy (inflate).

WARNING
■When installing a child restraint system
● When a booster seat is installed, always ensure that the should er belt is
positioned across the center of the child’s shoulder. The belt should be
kept away from the child’s neck, but not so that it could fall off the child’s
shoulder. Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury in the event
of an accident or a sudden braking.
● Ensure that the belt and plate are securely locked and the seat belt is not
twisted.
● Shake the child restraint system left and right, and forward an d backward
to ensure that it has been securely installed.
● Follow all installation instructions provided by the child restraint system
manufacturer.
● Double Cab models only: When securing some types of child restraint sys-
tems in rear seats, it may not be possible to properly use the seat belts in
positions next to the child restraint without interfering with it or affecting
seat belt effectiveness. Be sure your seat belt fits snugly across your
shoulder and low on your hips. If it does not, or if it interfe res with the child
restraint, move to a different position. Failure to do so may result in death
or serious injury.
● Double Cab models only: When installing the child restraint system with
the head restraint being lowered, be sure to have the top tether strap pass
over the top of the head restraint. If the belt passes below the head
restraint, it is possible that the child restraint system may not be securely
fixed.
If the seat is adjusted, reconfirm the security of the child re straint system.
■ Do not use a seat belt extender
If a seat belt extender is used when installing a child restraint system, the
seat belt will not securely hold the child restraint system, which could cause
death or serious injury to the child or other passengers in the event of a sud-
den braking, sudden swerving or an accident.
■ To correctly attach a child restr aint system to the anchors (vehicles
with rear seats)
When using the LATCH anchors, be sure that there are no foreign objects
around the anchors and that the seat belt is not caught behind the child
restraint system. Make sure the child restraint system is secur ely attached,
or it may cause death or serious injury to the child or other p assengers in
the event of a sudden braking or an accident.

Operation of each component
■Rear seat reminder function
●In order to remind you not to forget luggage, etc. in the rear seat, when the
engine switch is turned off after any of the following conditio ns are met, a
message will be displayed on the multi-information display for approximately
6 seconds.
• The engine is started within 10 minutes after opening and clos ing a rear
door.
• A rear door has been opened and closed after the engine was st arted.
However, if a rear door is opened and then closed within approx imately 2 sec-
onds, the rear seat reminder function may not operate.
● The rear seat reminder function determines that luggage, etc., has been
placed in a rear seat based on opening and closing of a rear door. There-
fore, depending on the situation, the rear seat reminder function may not
operate and you may still forget luggage, etc., in the rear seat, or it may
operate unnecessarily.
● The rear seat reminder function can be enabled/disabled. ( P. 574)
■ Customization that can be configured at Toyota dealer
Settings (e.g. unlocking function using a key) can be changed.

WARNING
■ To prevent an accident
Observe the following precautions while driving the vehicle.
Failure to do so may result in a door opening and an occupant throwing out
of the vehicle, resulting in death or serious injury.
● Ensure that all doors are properly closed and locked.
● Do not pull the inside handle of the doors while driving.
Be especially careful for the front doors, as the doors may be opened even
if the inside lock buttons are in locked position.
● Double Cab models only: Set the rear door child-protector locks when chil-
dren are seated in the rear seats.
NOTICE
■When opening or closing the front door and access door (Access Cab
models only)
The front door and access door could be damaged if they hit each other
when being opened or closed.

The power windows can be opened and closed using the switches.

■Closing the windows
● The driver is responsible for all the power window operations, including the
operation for the passengers. In order to prevent accidental op eration,
especially by a child, do not let a child operate the power windows. It is
possible for children and other passengers to have body parts c aught in
the power window. Also, when riding with a child, it is recommended to use
the window lock switch. ( P. 156)
● Check to make sure that all passengers do not have any part of their body
in a position where it could be caught when a window is being o perated.
● When exiting the vehicle, turn the engine switch to the “LOCK” position
(vehicles without a smart key system) or off (vehicles with a smart key sys-
tem), carry the key and exit the vehicle along with the child. There may be
accidental operation, due to mischief, etc., that may possibly lead to an
accident.
■ Jam protection function (type B only)
● Never use any part of your body to intentionally activate the jam protection
function.
● The jam protection function may not work if something gets caught just
before the window fully closes.

■Caution while driving
Keep the back window closed while driving.
If the back window is left open, the luggage may be unexpectedly thrown
out, causing an accident.
In addition, exhaust gases may enter the vehicle, causing death or a seri-
ous health hazard. Make sure to close the back window before dr iving.
■ Closing the power back window
● The driver is responsible for power back window opening and clo sing
operation. In order to prevent accidental operation, especially by a child,
do not let a child operate the power back window. It is possible for children
and other passengers to have body parts caught in the power back win-
dow.
● Check to make sure that all passengers do not have any part of their body
in a position where it could be caught when a window is being o perated.
● When exiting the vehicle, turn the engine switch to the “LOCK” position
