Maintenance and care
With the engine at operating temperature and turned off, check the oil
level on the dipstick.
■Checking the engine oil
Park the vehicle on level ground. After warming up the engine
and turning it off, wait more than 5 minutes for the oil to drain
back into the bottom of the engine.
Remove the sand and dust from around the dipstick.
Holding a rag under the end,
pull the dipstick out.
Wipe the dipstick clean.
Make sure that the inlet of the oil level gauge guide and O-ring of the
dipstick are free from sand and dust.
If the O-ring is damaged, replace it with a new one.
Reinsert the dipstick fully.
Holding a rag under the end,
pull the dipstick out and
check the oil level.

The shape of the dipstick may
differ depending on the type
of vehicle or engine.

■Adding engine oil
If the oil level is below or near
the low level mark, add engine
oil of the same type as that
already in the engine.
Make sure to check the oil type and prepare the items needed
before adding oil.
Remove the sand and dust from around the oil filler cap.
Remove the oil filler cap by turning it counterclockwise.
Add engine oil slowly, checking the dipstick.
Install the oil filler cap by turning it clockwise.
■ Engine oil consumption
A certain amount of engine oil will be consumed while driving. In the following
situations, oil consumption may increase, and engine oil may need to be
refilled in between oil maintenance intervals.
● When the engine is new, for example directly after purchasing the vehicle or
after replacing the engine
● If low quality oil or oil of an inappropriate viscosity is used
● When driving at high engine speeds or with a heavy load, when towing (with
towing hitch), or when driving while accelerating or decelerating frequently
● When leaving the engine idling for a long time, or when driving frequently
through heavy traffic

Maintenance and care
■After changing the engine oil (models for model code destination W*)
The engine oil maintenance data should be reset. Perform the following pro-
cedures:
Switch the display to the trip meter A ( P. 130) when the engine switch is
in the “ON” position (vehicles without smart entry & start system) or IGNI-
TION ON mode (vehicles with smart entry & start system).
Turn the engine switch to the “LOCK” position (vehicles without smart entry
& start system) or off (vehicles with smart entry & start system).
While pressing the odometer/trip meter display change button ( P. 130),
turn the engine switch to the “ON” position (vehicles without smart entry &
start system) or IGNITION ON mode (vehicles with smart entry & start sys-
tem). (Do not start the engine because reset mode will be canceled.) Con-
tinue to press and hold the button for more than one second after the trip
meter displays “000000”.
*: See “Checking your vehicle’s model” if you are not sure of which model
your vehicle is. ( P. 1 2 )
WARNING
■Used engine oil
● Used engine oil contains potentially harmful contaminants which may
cause skin disorders such as inflammation and skin cancer, so care
should be taken to avoid prolonged and repeated contact. To remove used
engine oil from your skin, wash thoroughly with soap and water.
● Dispose of used oil and filters only in a safe and acceptable manner. Do
not dispose of used oil and filters in household trash, in sewers or onto the
ground. Call any authorized Toyota reta iler or Toyota authorized repairer,
or any reliable repairer, service station or auto parts store for information
concerning recycling or disposal.
● Do not leave used engine oil within the reach of children.
NOTICE
■To prevent serious engine damage
Check the oil level on a regular basis.
■ When replacing the engine oil
● Be careful not to spill engine oil on the vehicle components.
● Avoid overfilling, or the engine could be damaged.
● Check the oil level on the dipstick every time you refill the vehicle.
● Be sure the engine oil filler cap is properly tightened.

*1: Vehicles with multi-information display: a indicator is displayed on the
multi-information display.
*2: The buzzer sounds if the vehicle reaches a speed of 5 km/h (3 mph).
*3: Slow down until the lamp goes off.
*4: The buzzer sounds when the differential oil temperature is too high and
turning the front-wheel drive control switch to H2 is required.
*5: The buzzer will sound at the same time the warning light flashes.
*6: The light turns to yellow.
*7: The open door warning buzzer sounds if the vehicle reaches or exceeds a
speed of 5 km/h (3 mph).
*8: The driver’s and front passenger’s seat belt warning buzzer sounds to alert
the driver and front passenger that his or her seat belt is not fastened. If
the seat belt is unfastened, the buzzer sounds intermittently for a certain
period of time after the vehicle reaches a certain speed.
*9: Models made in South Africa*10, and models made in Thailand*10 with
rear seat heaters:
The rear passengers’ seat belt warning buzzer sounds to alert the rear
passenger that his or her seat belt is not fastened. If the seat belt is unfas-
tened, the buzzer sounds intermittently for a certain period of time after the
vehicle reaches a certain speed.
Models made in Thailand*10 without rear seat heaters:
The rear passengers’ seat belt warning buzzer sounds to alert the rear
passenger that his or her seat belt is not fastened. If the seat belt is unfas-
tened, the buzzer sounds intermittently for a certain period of time, after
the seat belt is fastened and unfastened and the vehicle reaches a certain
speed.
*10: See “Checking your vehicle’s model” if you are not sure of which model
your vehicle is. ( P. 1 2 )
*11: The parking brake engaged warning buzzer sounds if the vehicle reaches a
speed of approximately 5 km/h (3 mph) or more.
