7-2. Steps to take in an emergency
When trouble arises
When using a flat-bed truck to
transport the vehicle, use tire strap-
ping belts. Refer to the owner’s
manual of the flat-bed truck for the
tire strapping method.
In order to suppress vehicle move-
ment during transportation, set the
parking brake and turn the engine
switch off.
If a tow truck is not available in an
emergency, your vehicle may be
temporarily towed using cables or
chains secured to the emergency
towing eyelets. This should only be
attempted on hard surfaced roads
for at most 80 km (50 miles) at
under 30 km/h (18 mph).
A driver must be in the vehicle to
steer and operate the brakes. The
vehicle’s wheels, drive train, axles,
steering and brakes must be in
good condition.
To have your vehicle towed by
another vehicle, the towing eyelet
must be installed to your vehicle.
Install the towing eyelet using the
following procedure.
1 Take out the towing eyelet.
( P.285, 325)
2 Remove the eyelet cover using
a flathead screwdriver.
To protect the bodywork, place a rag
between the screwdriver and the vehi- cle body as shown in the illustration.

WARNING
■After recharging the battery
Have the battery inspected at any
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer as soon as possible.
If the battery is deteriorating, contin- ued use may cause the battery to emit a malodorous gas, which may be
detrimental to the health of passen- gers.
■When replacing the battery
●For information regarding battery replacement, contact any autho-
rized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
●After replacing, securely attach the exhaust hose and exhaust hole
plug to the exhaust hole of the replaced battery. If not properly installed, gases (hydrogen) may
leak into the vehicle interior, and there is the possible danger of the gas igniting and exploding.
NOTICE
■When handling jumper cables
When connecting the jumper cables,
ensure that they do not become entangled in the cooling fan or engine drive belt.
■To prevent damaging the vehicle
The exclusive jump starting terminal
is to be used when charging the bat- tery from another vehicle in an emer-gency. It cannot be used to jump start

conditioning system on to check
that the radiator cooling fan
operate and to check for coolant
leaks from the radiator or hoses.
The fan operate when the air condition-

WARNING
■When inspecting under the hood of your vehicle
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in serious injury such as burns.
●If steam is seen coming from under the hood, do not open the hood until the steam has subsided. The
engine compartment may be very hot.
●Keep hands and clothing (espe-cially a tie, a scarf or a muffler) away from the fan and belts. Failure
to do so may cause the hands or clothing to be caught, resulting in serious injury.
●Do not loosen the coolant reservoir caps while the engine and radiator
are hot. High temperature steam or coolant could spray out.
NOTICE
■When adding engine coolant
Add coolant slowly after the engine has cooled down sufficiently. Adding
cool coolant to a hot engine too quickly can cause damage to the engine.
■To prevent damage to the cooling system
Observe the following precautions:
●Avoid contaminating the coolant
with foreign matter (such as sand or dust etc.).
●Do not use any coolant additive.
